A  novel  prototype  to  match  crowd-‐sourced  ideas  from  the  public  with  pa8ent-‐centered  researchers.  THE  INNOVATION  WellSpringboard  is  a  crowd-‐sourced,  online  universe  that  champions  meaningful  and  comprehensive  public  engagement  in  pa8ent-‐centered  research,  through  which:  •  Individuals  can  propose  ques8ons  and  problems  for  future  research  and  invite  other  members  of  the  public  to  endorse,  financially  support,  and  volunteer  for  the  research  to  follow

•  Researchers  can  apply  to  receive  funds  raised  through  public  support  of  research  ideas;  veDng  of  applica8ons  will  include  review  by  scien8sts  and  the  public  in  order  to  iden8fy  pa8ent-‐researcher  ‘matches’

•  Researchers  funded  through  matches  will  be  accountable  to  the  public  for  their  work,  their  findings,  and  ideas  about  next  steps

Public  ideas.  Pa5ent-‐focused  researchers.    Op5mal  matches.  Visible  results.

Crowd-‐Sourced  Research  Ideas  Members  of  the  public  are  invited  to  submit  videos  about  their  ideas  for  pa8ent-‐oriented  outcomes  research;  there  is  a  Spanish-‐language  side  of  the  website  to  welcome  input  from  the  La8no  community  as  well  (not  pictured  here)    People  who  submit  also  tag  their  ideas  with  specific  aOributes,  such  as  age  and  gender,  so  that  visitors  can  search  for  ideas  that  fit  their  interests    For  each  research  idea,  visitors  to  the  website  can  view  the  brief  explanatory  video  and  browse  the  paired  text  descrip8on;  they  can  share  project  ideas  they  like  with  their  friends  or  with  researchers  who  have  posted  profiles  on  WellSpringboard    Visitors  can  also  keep  up  with  how  the  project  is  doing,  in  terms  of  raising  funds,  drawing  researchers’  interest,  and  8me  frame  remaining    Visitors  to  WellSpringboard  can  jump  in  -‐-‐  by  pledging  to  donate  and/or  offering  to  volunteer  (as  a  research  subject  and/or  a  reviewer  of  applica8ons)

Researcher  Profiles  Engaging  researchers  who  want  to  conduct  pa8ent-‐oriented  outcomes  research  based  on  crowd-‐sourced  ideas  is  another  key  feature  of  the  WellSpringboard  plaVorm    Researchers  are  invited  to  submit  videos  and  accompanying  text  blurbs  that  describe  their  interests  and  prior  work;  they  also  list  tags  that  can  be  used  by  visitors  to  find  researchers  with  par8cular  interests    Researchers  are  encouraged  to  go  to  the  “Explore  and  Support  Ideas”  page,  in  order  to  indicate  their  interest  in  crowd-‐sourced  ideas;  when  an  idea  is  fully  funded,  researchers  can  submit  their  applica8ons  for  funding

Matching  Crowd-‐Sourced  Ideas  to  Researchers  Adults.  Children.  Seniors.  Infants.  Women.  Men.  African  Americans.  Hispanics/La8nos.  Asian  Americans.  Non-‐Hispanic  whites.  Na8ve  popula8ons.  Hard-‐to-‐reach  groups.    No  maOer  the  focus  –  if  the  crowd-‐sourced  research  idea  is  focused  on  pa8ent-‐oriented  outcomes  research,  WellSpringboard  is  ready.    The  project  team  is  prepared  to  help  the  public  understand  PCOR  and  shape  their  ideas  accordingly.      Once  an  idea  has  been  funded  by  the  public  to  its  target  level,  applica8ons  will  be  welcomed  from  par8cipa8ng  researchers.  A  review  commiOee  including  scien8sts  and  members  of  the  public  will  review  the  applica8ons  and  decide  on  the  op8mal  match  of  idea  and  researcher.    Researchers  will  then  be  responsible  for  upda8ng  the  public  (on  the  WellSpringboard  site)  with  their  progress  and  findings.  WellSpringboard  will  encourage  the  public  to  submit  new  ideas  that  follow-‐up  on  the  findings  from  earlier  funded  projects.

WellSpringboard  Funding:  Op8ons

The  WellSpringboard  team  has  developed  2  poten8al  op8ons  for  project  funding,  subject  to  review  by  PCORI.  The  proposed  inclusion  of  indirect  funds  from  PCORI  is  designed  to  broaden  and  deepen  the  interest  of  the  researcher  community  in  this  effort.  The  team  welcomes  input  and  sugges8ons  for  modifica8ons  from  PCORI  staff.    In  each  op8on  below,  “x”  represents  the  funds  raised  through  crowd-‐sourced  dona8ons  via  the  WellSpringboard  site.  Opera8ng  costs  of  WellSpringboard  would  be  financed  directly  from  PCORI,  under  separate  arrangements.    Op5on  A

Project  funding  (direct)  from  WellSpringboard  public  dona8ons  ($x)    Indirect  funding  at  30%  rate  from  PCORI  (0.3*$x)    Total  funds  per  project  =  1.3*$x

Op5on  B    Project  funding  (direct)  from  WellSpringboard  public  dona8ons  ($x)    Matching  funding  (direct)  from  PCORI  ($x)      Indirect  funding  at  30%  rate  from  PCORI  (0.3*$x)    Total  funds  per  project  =  2.3*$x
