As mothers, we wear a lot of hats for our families. We are nurturers. We are providers. We are supporters, and we are caregivers. But while it's impossible to ignore our role in benefitting the health of our children, partners, and loved ones, it's also important for us to take time to focus on our own unique health concerns. In this issue of ON HEALTH, we'll take a look at the many aspects of health and wellness from a mom's perspective. From meal planning and caregiver support on page 3, to an in-depth look at health concerns many of us often ignore or overlook on pages 4-5, to special considerations related to birth control and gynecologic surgery on page 6, there's something that should speak to each of us—no matter where we find ourselves in our health journey.

As a mom, MEAL PLANNING AND NUTRITIONAL

NEEDS OFTEN FALL TO YOU. WHETHER

YOU’RE FEEDING YOUR KIDS

OR CARING FOR LOVED ONES,

BALANCING YOUR FAMILY’S WELLNESS

IS AN IMPORTANT DAY-TO-DAY TASK THAT

REQUIRES THE RIGHT RESOURCES TO

KEEP EVERYONE HAPPY AND HEALTHY.

supporting our spouse

raising our children

caring for mom & dad

TIFTBITDID YOU KNOW according to Pew Research, nearly half of all middle aged adults have at least one parent age 65 or older, while also raising or supporting a child?

BECOME A CHOLESTEROL-FIGHTING, MEAL-BUILDING CHAMPION. Making good lifestyle choices is one of the best ways to keep your cholesterol under control. If you’re worried about cholesterol and need to reduce your levels, or are helping someone in your family to make heart-healthy decisions, here are several easy ways to transform your meals.

REPLACE BUTTER WITH MARGARINE. Butter is high in saturated fat which can quickly spike your cholesterol levels. Olive and vegetable-based oils are great alternatives.

USE GROUND TURKEY INSTEAD OF GROUND BEEF. Red meat is high in saturated fat and dietary cholesterol. Add your favorite seasonings to ground turkey burgers and other dishes so you don’t miss out on the tastes you love.

TRY QUINOA INSTEAD OF RICE. Quinoa is high in protein and fiber, low in carbohydrates, and very versatile. It can even help lower your blood cholesterol thanks to its soluble fiber content.

AVOID CARBS. Try zucchini noodles for a nutritious pasta replacement.

LIMIT CHEESES. Try lowfat or reduced-fat cheeses, or better yet, try edamame or vegetables and hummus before dinner or for an afternoon snack.

MEAL PREP! Set aside time over the weekend to plan your meals and to visit the store so you can prepare lunches and dinners for the upcoming week.

Personal nutrition counseling is available at Affinity Pediatrics with registered dietitian Lauren Saxena, RD, LD, CDC. Talk to your provider about a referral or call 229-353-4632 for more information.

As members of the “sandwich generation,”

many of us recognize the fact that transitioning from child to caregiver can be a challenge,

particularly if you have children of your own to take care of. The truth is, we could all use a helping hand, and palliative care can provide relief and peace of mind for both caregivers and their parents living with

chronic conditions or other serious illnesses.

Palliative care is a type of treatment that helps caretakers

living with loved ones suffering from illnesses

like cancer, congestive heart failure, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, experience a better quality of life. Palliative care

assists the patient and alleviates the responsibility placed on family members.

RELIEF FOR LOVED ONES

Parts and Pieces

THINK OF YOUR BODY AS A UNIQUELY CRAFTED

CLOCK—EVEN THOUGH YOU SEE IT WORKING

FROM THE OUTSIDE, THERE IS SO MUCH

MORE HAPPENING UNDER THE SURFACE.

FROM YOUR ENDOCRINE SYSTEM AND

DIGESTIVE TRACT TO YOUR BONES

AND CARDIOVASCULAR FUNCTIONS—

THERE ARE COUNTLESS MOVING

PARTS THAT REQUIRE CARE AND

OBSERVATION TO KEEP YOU HEALTHY.

A knee injury can put a cap on a lot of your everyday activities. From simple tasks like walking to work or climbing stairs, your knees are crucial to your body’s ability to move. We talked to TRMC’s orthopedic specialist, David Banks, MD, FAAOS, for his knee knowledge.

According to Dr. Banks, some common signs you may need knee surgery are: experiencing consistent loss of motion, not being able to place weight on your knee, or hearing a pop when you turn or twist your knee. He advises you consult a doctor right away if your range of motion is severely limited, or if your pain prevents you from taking part in everyday activities. Joint pain typically builds throughout the day or is described as a stiffness first thing in the morning or after a period of rest.

COMMON THYROID MYTHS: 1 Thyroid issues only develop in older

women.2 A lump on your neck means you have

a thyroid problem.3 Gluten intolerance can cause thyroid

disease.4 Doing headstands will alleviate your

thyroid disease symptoms.5 Consuming more iodine will improve

thyroid health.6 Eliminating metallic foods from your

diet can alleviate thyroid problems.

To make an appointment with Dr. Tracy Nolan at SGS in Tifton, talk to your provider about a referral or call 229-382-9733.

A GLANCE AT YOUR GLANDS Who knew butterflies could be so important? Your thyroid—a butterfly-shaped gland in your throat—produces two important hor-

mones that travel throughout your body and help level-out your everyday functions. When

these levels are too high or too low, it can result in thyroid disease along with side effects like depression, memory loss, and trouble sleeping. “About 20 million Americans—more of them women than men—are affected by a thyroid disease or disorder,” said Tracy Nolan, MD, general surgeon with South Georgia Surgical (SGS). “In fact, an estimated one-in-eight women will develop a thyroid disorder at some time in her life. The good news is that these problems can be treated.” The SGS experts specialize in thyroid disease diagnosis and treatment.

BURN BABY BURN: A LOOK AT HEARTBURN VS. INDIGESTION Heartburn and indigestion get lumped

together a lot, but they’re actually quite different. Heartburn is your body’s response to eating particular foods high in fat or acid, or can be

caused by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

SYMPTOMS OF HEARTBURN INCLUDE: + Sour taste in your mouth+ Burning in the chest+ Pain in your throat or neck

Indigestion, however, is associated with con-suming spicy, fatty, and greasy foods, eating too quickly, and consuming large portions, or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol or caffeine. Stress, nerves, and anxiety are all common causes for indigestion, too.

SYMPTOMS OF INDIGESTION INCLUDE: + Stomach pain and discomfort

in your belly+ Feeling full during or after eating+ Frequent belching+ Feeling nauseous+ Having heartburn+ Feeling bloated

For chronic heartburn sufferers, the good news is there are treatment options avail-able beyond antacids. The LINX Reflux Management System is an advanced surgi-cal solution that helps reduce heartburn. The LINX is a quarter sized device that can be inserted into your LES (Lower Esopha-geal Sphincter) and works with your reflux barrier to help prevent stomach acid from entering your esophagus.

VARICOSE VEINS, BE GONE!Swollen, twisted veins that are visible just under the surface of the skin—these are called varicose veins. TRMC Radiologist

Carl Stalvey, MD, is now offering a non- surgical procedure to treat varicose veins.

The VenaCure EVLT laser vein treatment procedure utilizes laser energy to achieve proven results without the discomfort and lengthy recovery experienced through surgical options.

The minimally invasive procedure uses a laser to treat varicose veins—increasing circula-tion and improving surface appearance. The entire procedure takes about an hour and, depending on the severity of the condition, may be covered by insurance with a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner.

For more information, visit tiftregional.com/ LaserVeinTreatment or call TRMC Radiology at 229-353-6966.

INNOVATIVE Contraceptive Options

for Busy Women

Let’s Get Robotic As a woman, you’re familiar with balancing a variety of commitments from work to carpool to workouts. Sensitive topics like pelvic pain, bleeding, or hysterectomies often mean reworking your already hectic schedule, so you may put them off or set them aside. Where will you find the time, and what about the scars? The good news is that less disruptive treatment options are now available. OB/GYN specialist Rana Khalek, MD, has the scoop on the benefits of robotic GYN surgery. The da Vinci robotic system for gynecological surgery utilizes minimally invasive tools to offer a solution for conditions such as pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fibroids, cancer, and hysterectomies.

THE DA VINCI SYSTEM OFFERS:+ Greater precision+ Enhanced 3D visualization+ Detailed surgical incisions

WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU: + Smaller scars+ Less discomfort+ Quicker recovery time

Affinity Physicians for Women (APFW) offers Nexplanon and Mirena contraception for patients, which provides an alternative to traditional birth control options such as tubal ligation (“tying of the tubes”) or daily pills. OB/GYN Bishara Baddour, MD with APFW said Nexplanon and Mirena are two preferred options for many women with busy lives. “Nexplanon is a small, thin and flexible implant which is placed in the arm, providing up to three years of continuous birth control,” said Dr. Baddour. “Nexplanon is 99 percent effective. It is completely reversible and can be removed at any time during the three-year period.” While Nexplanon is implanted in the arm, Mirena is placed in the uterus. “Mirena is a hormone-releasing intrauterine device, or IUD, that is over 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy for as long as you want, for up to five years,” said Dr. Baddour. Both Nexplanon and Mirena work by putting a steady, low dose of hormone into the bloodstream which helps the body safely prevent pregnancy in various ways. “Patients appreciate the effectiveness and convenience of these contraceptive methods,” said Dr. Baddour.
