Colour ChangeAfter 195 editions we decided to change our cover; we hope you like it. We plan to have the cover photograph complement one of our news stories each month but we will be very pleased to consider using photographs of Welton (present or past) supplied by our readers; please email them to [email protected].

The Walk in the Park event was again a tremendous success with a huge crowd of participants and supporters. With a wide range of entertainment, stalls and refreshments it was a great occasion for villagers to get together and enjoy themselves while raising money for that vital service: the air ambulance. Our cover photo refl ects the carnival mood of the day.

I had the privilege to attend the ‘A’ level results morning at the William Farr School in mid-August. Students waited anxiously for the 9am deadline to fi nd out if they had achieved their hoped-for results. As each picked up the white envelope with their name on it, anxiety quickly turned to delight and the whole room became a cacophony of joy as it became obvious that the William Farr School had again excelled. A resumé of the results is provided on page 30.

Matt’s FundThe sun shone brightly, the bunting fl uttered in the breeze, the kettle was bubbling and the cake table fi lled up and then quickly emptied. It was Di’s coffee

morning and a grand total of £611 was raised for Matt’s Fund. Thanks go to everyone who came along and supported the event and especially to Ethel, Christine and Sue who did such a great job in the kitchen and with the raffl e. Thanks also go to Wendy (Aloe Vera), Sue (Phoenix Cards), Jo (Molly Me), Sue (Nails) and Amanda (Gemstones) for bringing such an interesting array of products to sell. Many of those who attended brought along a cake or raffl e prize too; all-in-all it was a fantastic result and we hope everyone enjoyed the morning.Did you see the reports in newspapers and on TV about the amazing developments in melanoma treatment? We have long been supporting the work in developing immunotherapy drugs to fi ght this disease; trials have now shown that combining two drugs results in signifi cant shrinking of tumours. Melanoma has the ability to disguise itself from the body’s own defences; by taking away the disguise

mechanism the body’s own immune system can recognise and then attack the intrusive tumour. It’s not a cure yet; it’s a life extender and a positive move in the right direction.

We hope that as you read this article summer is not over and we are still looking forward to some sunny and warm days in the autumn weeks to come. Of course much is made of over-indulging in the sunshine and the risk of sunburn, not just in this country but especially when travelling overseas where the sun can be much stronger.

Sunburn is a major factor in the development of skin cancer, so the advice is to take care and use sun creams for protection. But which one? When buying suncreams look for those offering UVA (responsible for ageing) and UVB (responsible for sunburn) protection. SPF stands for ‘Sun Protection Factor’ and the higher the factor the greater the protection.

Finally, it’s only a few weeks until our golf day at Market Rasen. As I write this, most of our tee times are already taken up but if you would like to join us send an email to check what times are still available.

As always, thank you for your support.

Unique LifeThe recent discovery of Kepler-452b has excited astronomers and raised, once again, that age-old question about the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe. The planet is roughly the same size as our own and orbits its sun at a distance that means that its temperature and climate could be conducive to conditions that support life. Its ‘year’, or orbit cycle, is 385 days, similar to Earth’s. However, it could be a gas planet, having no surface, and it might even not have an atmosphere. We don’t actually know it exists at all, as it can’t be seen. Its presence some 8,400 million million miles away is inferred by a small reduction in the light of its sun as it crosses the path between it and the space telescope that observes it. And to cap it all, due to the time differential caused by visual images travelling at the speed of light, what we are observing now actually happened some 1,400 years ago, so we can’t be sure it is still there.

It’s a tantalising thought, despite all these unknowns, that life might just exist somewhere out there; a possibility which has made millions for sci-fi writers and fi lm-makers over the years. But it does raise other questions, more philosophical and perhaps even spiritual. The Bible says that God is the origin of

all creation and mankind is its ‘crown’, the summit of all He made. How would the existence of intelligent and sentient life elsewhere alter our perception of our ‘specialness’? If beings something like us exist, were they sent a Saviour too?

Speculation about alien life forms is of course getting way ahead of what we know but, until evidence emerges to the contrary, the fact remains that we are alone in this vast and ever-expanding universe, and surely that tells us something. Whatever explanations of our origins science offers, our sense of wonder and awe at creation and at our very existence opens up the way for us to perceive God at work and to meet Him on His terms, rather than trying to defi ne or dismiss Him in terms of what we think we know scientifi cally. He will not be rationalised or categorised, explained or contained. He is God, who has acted in love both in creating and redeeming His creation.

My hunch is that we are the unique, special creation of God. Since it’s estimated that any message we might send to the residents of Kepler-452b will take 1,400 years to be received (and the same for a response to arrive), I can be fairly confi dent that it’s unlikely that I shall be proved wrong in the near future.

*Harvest FestivalIn years gone by, this was a time to give thanks for a harvest safely gathered in. An area like ours would have lots of farm workers living here and their livelihood depended on a good harvest. We may not be so dependent on a good harvest but it is good to remember how lucky we are to have plenty, especially when we know of so many who do not. This will be a family service followed by a lunch and then a fun auction. The church will be decorated with greenery as well as food stuff. All tinned goods go to the Community Larder and the fresh produce is auctioned off with the money going to charity. Everyone is welcome!

Ladies FellowshipWe will not be meeting in September so our next meeting will be held on Thursday 8th October when our speaker will be Rev Helen Hooley. Her talk will be ‘Called or Collared’.We meet on the second Thursday of each month when we have a variety of speakers and topics. All are welcome and if you would like further details about this or any of our meetings please contact Barbara on 860823.

Saturday Coffee MorningEach Saturday the old church hall is open from 10am until 11.30am. Yes, you can get a good cup of coffee but also meet with your friends and possibly make some new ones. We also have a great book stall available for all you book lovers. The following are ‘on duty’ during September:5th Donna and Steve12th Jane H and Anne L19th Hilda and June26th Marian and Keith

New Coffee Drop InStarting on Wednesday, 16th September, we will be open for coffee and light refreshments from 10am. Our Saturday coffee mornings are so popular that we’ve decided to offer an extra day. We can cater for all ages with toys available for the little ones. This is a new venture so why not come along and give it a try.

Film ClubWe meet in our winter season on the fi rst Thursday of each month for a fi lm and afternoon tea. Our fi rst meeting will be on 3rd September starting at 2pm so please ring 860998 to book a seat.

UK education; should try harder?

As I write this, parents and school students will be at the end of the nail-biting wait for this year’s GCSE and A Level results. No doubt there will many excellent performances, many that outstripped what was expected and, sadly, some disappointment, although those in this position should take heart from the poor correlation between examination success and a fulfi lled and happy adult life.

On other pages in this issue there is news of the excellent results of William Farr students but, according to a recent report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) all is not well in the state of Denmark, or the UK for that matter, when it comes to educational attainment. This report ranked 57 countries according to the maths and science attainments of its 15 year-olds. The UK came 20th and Denmark 22nd, although both out-performed a signifi cant

number of those in the developed world, notably the United States which trailed in 28th and Sweden (35th). Dominating the top of the list were Asian countries headed by Singapore. China as a whole was not included but Hong Kong came second. Another OECD report in 2012 came up with virtually the same result, made worse by the fact that it included reading as well and showed that our performance trend was downward in both maths and science.

So what are we to make of this? Are western education systems failing? Are our teachers not up to the mark, our children insuffi ciently bright or disciplined to learn, do our parents have insuffi cient ambition for their children or are there other factors at play? And anyway, are there other criteria better to measure success in education?

Undoubtedly, the burden of history hangs heavy on all aspects of developed countries’ education systems, slowing their ability to respond to changing circumstances.

Our declining economic performance and widening social divisions and wealth inequality also militate against the kind of investment in and commitment to egalitarian schooling which might enable more of those children currently living in the least promising circumstances to reach their potential. Another OECD report stresses the importance of policies that focus resources on those who under-achieve. Incidentally, it concludes that immigration has no negative impact on educational attainment. It stresses how parental expectation and support for learning are crucial factors in educational outcomes and warns against separating high and low achievers. Of course, one way of reducing geographical educational and health inequality would be to put all teachers and NHS doctors and nurses on national contracts that would allow them to be directed to where we need them rather than where they prefer to work but this seems unlikely. Are there lessons to be learned from those countries with the highest level of

educational attainment? The Department for Education is presently testing a whole class approach to maths teaching based on one used in Shanghai and says that it has been a great success. Those watching the current BBC documentary series following a group of Chinese teachers in an English comp will have seen the potential diffi culties of such a major cultural shift. It may not be coincidental that some of the highest-performing countries are also the most regimented and, in some cases, repressive regimes in the world. Are we willing to adopt such a system here, which would be considerably more controlling of both students and teachers? For those who are uneasy, the OECD offers some support, as it seems that our children are comparatively better at problem solving than some of their higher-performing peers in other countries. Here, it seems, there may be some support for the view that education is about more than what you learn in schools.

Walk in the Park‘WOW’. What an amazing day we all had and wasn’t the weather kind to us this year? It was wonderful to see 260 participants taking up the challenge to ensure at least one member of their team was on the track at all times over the twelve hours. All this together with family, friends and the general public who came along to support and soak up the atmosphere!

It was fantastic to see the Dakota fl ypast, to listen to the live music, to see a range of stalls, activities and displays. The climbing wall, infl atables and fi reworks were a great hit and as ever the weird and wonderful outfi ts for our themed laps were incredible. Our sincere thanks go to Mr Stones, Headteacher of the William Farr School, for once again taking part in our ‘warm up’ and the opening lap so enthusiastically!

We were delighted that the Ambucopter was able to land and provide everyone

with the opportunity to take a look around, ask questions and even sit inside. The arrival was somewhat later than planned, a result of attending two major incidents earlier in the day; this reinforced how important fundraising is for this local good cause.

There is still time to donate to our three good causes (Cancer Research UK, Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice) either on-line, by cheque or at our fi nal banking night on Thursday 10th September from 7pm until 8pm, at the Youth Club by the William Farr School. For further information, go to www.walkinthepark.org.uk/donate.

With many thanks going again to all who took part and/or contributed in some way with this year’s ‘Walk in the Park’; it has been great to have your involvement.

patients’ homes. Please can we ask patients not to re-order medication which is not required/needed at that time.

When drugs are returned to us like this, we are unable to put them back into stock and can no longer send them to third world countries and so they are unusable and wasted. Often these drugs have to be destroyed and one example recently was the return of over 1,000 tablets which had cost the NHS £60 and then another £20 in destruction kits plus the staffi ng time taken to do this.

Hackthorn SchoolFunny things, summer holidays. For a few brief moments they seem to stretch out before us in a seemingly endless vista of opportunities and exciting projects. Then just as you are getting into the swing of things, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been on the telly, it’s suddenly not quite as light in the evenings and the new school year is upon us!

Towards the end of summer term, sports day was a revelation, not least because it happened on the day it was originally planned for, but the audience turnout was unprecedented. So much so that Mrs Appleby had to organise three parents’ races!

Every year, the pupils who are moving up to secondary education are asked to come up with an idea for an end of year treat, usually something along the lines of bowling or a trip to the cinema.

Nothing so mundane this year; our leavers decided they were so smitten with school that they were going to come back on a Friday evening and camp overnight! What was initially viewed with a certain amount of trepidation in some quarters actually turned out to be a wonderful evening of celebration for all.

The school council organised another of their fantastic talent shows, which never cease to amaze the invited judges who always fi nd it hard to choose a winner from such a broad range of age and abilities. The highlight though, is always to see the generosity of spirit that the children all show to their fellow ‘competitors’ during the performances. One big surprise was the ‘Spice Girls’ act which unfortunately didn’t make it onto the stage in time for judging. There was a certain amount of mystery surrounding who they were, although one or two people noticed that some

of the staff had disappeared from the audience at the time!

It will soon be time for parents to start thinking about choosing that all-important fi rst school for children who are due to start in September 2016. We will be organising some activity days soon to give parents an opportunity to see our school in action and allow their child to experience what we have to offer at fi rst hand.

On Friday 25th September we will be holding a Macmillan coffee morning following Good Works assembly and will be serving coffee and cake from 9:50-10:50; it would be great to see you there!

Nettleham Community Choir

Another great singing year will begin on 10th September for Nettleham Community Choir which is celebrating its fi fth birthday. This year we’ve raised over £1,000 for a school in rural Malawi, performed all over Lincolnshire and kept the Co-op in business eating custard creams. We’ve given concerts, learnt about voice care and sung like larks, sometimes with our sister choir from Horncastle.

The best thing about the choir is our weekly rehearsals in the Junior School Hall on a Thursday night. Lots of members of the choir don’t perform, but meet every week to sing. Over the term we learn about our own voices; how to make the most of them, how to sing well and enjoy singing, whether in the choir or the shower!

Over the next year, we will keep building a choir for everyone and no matter what

you think of your singing voice, there is a place for you! We’ve already got a packed programme of Christmas performances and in 2016 we are planning to sing at events in Leicester and London. Our singers come from Welton, Nettleham, Sudbrooke, all over Lincoln and beyond; everyone is welcome! We sing anything and everything: sacred stuff, pop songs, sea shanties and songs from shows and fi lms. No one auditions, no one is judged, no one competes; everyone is welcome, everyone is valued and everyone sings.Interested? Come and have a listen, a sing and a custard cream; there’s no obligation. We meet on Thursday evenings from 10th September at Nettleham Junior School, Mill Hill, Lincoln, LN2 2PE from 6.30 until 8.30pm, throughout the year. Fees are £6 or £5 per week. Varieties stocked in the nursery include bamboos, ornamental trees, grasses, herbaceous plants and shrubs.Jane explained her use of planting companions: “In the garden there are many plants that look grand on their own but put together with another plant they can look absolutely superb, each bringing out the other’s very best qualities. Very often the choice of combination is made because subtle colours from one plant are highlighted in their companion; as an example, the reddish stems in one plant and red leaves in the other. Alternatively, one plant can provide a strong background colour to emphasize the beauty of its companion plant.Another of the many tips and hints that Jane kindly gave us during our tour was to leave the seed heads on grasses as they will give winter interest; wait until new growth begins the following year before removing the old heads.Have you ever been to Pensthorpe? You may think, “No”, but you could possibly

Hardy Plant SocietyHardy planters were on the move during the summer months. Our three mini-group leaders arranged a number of coach visits to enable members and their families (and sometimes friends) to enjoy a change of scene.

It was a wet 8.30am departure on an August Thursday for the Lincoln mini-group as we headed to Norfolk. But the gods were looking after us as the rain only came while we were in the coach and it remained dry during our two visits. Group leader Lynne Murdoch’s inspired choices were Hoecroft Plants at Severals Grange and Pensthorpe Natural Park at Fakenham.

We received a warm welcome on arrival by Severals Grange owner, Jane Lister, and we proceeded straight away for a tour of her garden. This enabled us to see mature plants of the varieties that are a temptation to all visitors, purchasers and plantaholics in the adjoining nursery.

have ‘visited’ by watching the very popular BBC TV ‘Springwatch’ programme. This was aired for three years from 2008-2010 and was presented by Chris Packham and Kate Humble. The Pensthorpe reserve, located in the Wensum Valley, near Fakenham, welcomes more than 90,000 visitors a year. Covering more than 500 acres, the location features a wide range of habitats including ancient woodland, wetland, wildfl ower meadows, marshland and scrub. As our visit was just for a few hours, those hardy planters who hadn’t visited previously, had to make a quick decision after consulting their maps to allow enough time to ensure that those areas that most appealed to them were included in their itinerary. I’m sure that this short visit will give everyone a taster for a great full day visit and many will return time and time again, as I have done, and in all four seasons. As well as one of the largest wildfl ower meadows in Norfolk there are three

dramatic gardens of year-round interest. Our organiser, Lynne Murdoch, chose July when world-famous garden designer, Piet Oudolf’s, one acre Millennium Garden is at its spectacular best, although the summer colour commences in June and continues through to August; and then the autumn colour takes over from September to October. The swathes of echinacea, astilbe, helenium, crocosmia and grasses swaying in the breeze were inspirational. Notebooks were at the ready as were cameras, iPads and iPhones.

This garden is planted in the popular prairie style with bold and colourful drifts of plants in a natural style and it’s certainly a magnet for both garden enthusiasts and lovers of wildlife. On the afternoon that we were there nearly every fl ower head seemed to be visited by butterfl ies, bees and a rich variety of many other insects.

On a previous visit in September 2011 the Millennium Garden had just re-opened after extensive replanting by Piet Oudolf and we were lucky to see his exquisite plans and ideas, plus photographs showing the actual work in progress. We were also able to join a tour of the park and, to our amazement, our driver/guide pointed out a skylark on the ground a few yards away that we would never have spotted ourselves. Next item on our list was to see one of our rare and native species, the red squirrel, which forms part of the breeding project at Pensthorpe along with corncrakes and cranes. The conservation of wildlife and wildlife habitats is the main focus of any work undertaken by Pensthorpe. They offer an annual animal adoption scheme to assist their work fi nancially and in fact 25% of the entry fee goes to their charity, the Pensthorpe Conservation Trust.

From the Millennium Garden we could see Old Squaw Lake and we strolled along to Moon Water and then on to Mill Pond. We paused to read the many informative signs and maps en-route plus photographs of the many species of ducks, geese and birds that we were likely to see on our way to the Wave Garden. All too soon it was time to wander back to the main building, past the ibis and Dulverton Aviary. After a quick look at the plants for sale and the gift shop, it was time to rejoin the coach for the journey back to Lincoln with, of

course, a hold full of plants. A very special day out, we all agreed.

Houghton retired. They organised affordable and comfortable holidays both at home and abroad. They also founded Welton Luncheon Club which was held every other Friday. Moyra was also a member of the Sunshine Club and a very active participant at the Old Tyme Music Hall.Welton Methodist Chapel was her life as was apparent on the Saturday before she had her massive stroke. She was wheeled into the new hall at the chapel for the grand opening ceremony. Everyone in the congregation stood, as one, cheered and clapped. The biggest smile appeared and she raised her arms in triumph. The afternoon was wonderful, she was so happy and she sang her heart out, especially with her granddaughter alongside. During the refreshments everyone chatted, laughed and reminisced. Six weeks later Moyra had passed away. Her family wish to extend our grateful thanks and appreciation to the minister, Andy Burrows, whose service was both

Walk Tall! The Walk in the Park event took place on Saturday 18th July from 10am to 10pm, brought forward an hour from last year in order to be more family friendly. Held once again on the William Farr School’s fi eld, it attracted 22 teams with 260 people registered to take part, all monies raised benefi ting St. Barnabas Hospice, the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, and Cancer Research UK. It was good to hear an early announcement state that local sponsorship had covered all outgoing costs, meaning that every penny made on the day could go directly to the three charities.A stiff breeze was the only notable weather feature this year; none of the electrical storms or driving rain of last July! The circuits began with a carnival conga, led by head teacher Andrew Stones, with everyone sporting their blue Walk in the Park T-shirts. However, to enter into the full fun of the day involved much more than merely walking around the fi eld; making a success of subsequent themed laps, such as outer space, under the sea and VE Day, required ingenuity and careful planning, both much in evidence.Musical entertainment was provided by performers from the William Farr and St. Mary’s schools, along with local bands,

and demonstrations were given by many groups ranging from Irish dancing to karate. Around the fi eld were plenty of opportunities to raise cash with a stall from each charity, plus many home grown draws such as a teddy tombola and pulling straws from a peg board. Further diversions were offered by a bouncy castle, climbing wall and laser pigeon shooting, all donating their takings from the day. Refreshments for all tastes were available, rewarded by a good turnout of spectators, particularly in the afternoon - more would always be welcome! There was a fl y past by the Dakota, and a visit by the Air Ambulance around tea time which proved popular with both adults and children. It had been scheduled for the middle of the afternoon but had to attend an accident in Spalding, which then needed a trip to Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, serving to remind us of the seriousness behind the fun.The day was fi nally rounded off with a spectacular fi reworks display which lit up the almost dark sky just before ten. Congratulations go to all who took part, and grateful thanks go to all those who have been involved in the planning and staging of the Walk in the Park, a thoroughly worthwhile and inspiring event; they should walk tall!

ST. MARY’S CHURCH NEWS

Harvest CheerSeptember is a month of change. It’s this time of year when the youngsters go back to school after their summer holidays (and the roads become noticeably busier). It’s when we notice the nights are beginning to draw in. It’s often when the discussions begin in households over when the heating gets switched back on. It’s the month of the car registration plate change. One recent survey even said it is the most popular time for changing jobs. It is a time of change. But this time of change also signals the approach of one of the churches most cheerful festivals, Harvest.

It’s good to be cheerful, and it’s good to laugh! The health benefi ts of laughter have become widely recognised in recent years. Research suggests that laughter releases chemicals that act as a natural pain-killer. Physical benefi ts of laughter have been found to include a drop in stress hormones and less risk of heart disease. Laughter is said to help lessen anxiety and stress. Humour can help us to keep a positive outlook in diffi cult situations. It is contagious and can help to dissolve distressing emotions. In a world that often seems broken, laughter can often bring relief and comfort.

Last summer, the BBC broadcast a series called ‘Some People With Jokes’. The fi rst two episodes were entitled, ‘Some Vicars With Jokes’. One review said that “the procession of vicars emphatically demonstrated that they really shouldn’t give up the day job. You hope – and pray – this isn’t what their congregations have to suffer every Sunday.” Another said “Not all the gags are classics – in a couple of cases I’m not sure they even make sense!” That may well have been so but what was so engaging in these episodes was the off-camera laughter of the rest of the clergy in response to the jokes. Perhaps you couldn’t help but smile along with them despite the vintage jokes, allowing your spirit to be lightened in the process.

Harvest is a great festival, an opportunity to bring an offering of food in thanks to God, or a monetary gift that can be used to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves. We know that ‘God loves a cheerful giver!’ and at Harvest Thanksgivings there is always a joyful air in church, especially as youngsters bring their gifts forward for the food banks. It can feel good to give and be generous. Come and give it a try!

Perhaps this September we can also pray for a harvest of laughter and joy in the places we live and work, even in the

places we worship! Perhaps we can ask God to help us fi nd joy in each other, and that others will see God’s fruit harvested in us, especially the fruit of joy.And if you need some good jokes to get you started, here are some of my favourite one-liners: “What did the pirate say when he turned 80? Aye matey!”; “My wife accused me of being immature. I told her to get out of my fort!”;“Hedgehogs: why can’t they just share the hedge?”.Have a great September,

Adam

William Farr A level resultsA-level students at William Farr School have achieved their highest ever number of A* grades since they were fi rst introduced in 2010. One in eight of this year’s A-level grades awarded to pupils at the school was an A*. The fi gure was an increase of almost 4% on last year. And the percentage of students achieving both A* and A-grades in their exams equalled last year’s record of 26.2%. The national average this year was 25.9%. A total of 43% of the school’s A-level students achieved grades A,B,B or better with almost a quarter getting A,A,B in facilitating subjects: maths, English, science, humanities and languages. For 18-year-old Amy Cragg, her hard work was rewarded with fi ve A* grades in French, Spanish, geography, politics and general studies. “I can’t believe it, I was absolutely amazed when I opened my results,” she said. “I am going to Cambridge to study modern languages, and tonight I am going out with my friends to celebrate!”Also going to Cambridge University are Elinor Clark and Tom Stanford. Elinor achieved an A* grade in English literature, geography and general studies, and A-grades in French and maths.

Tom’s efforts were rewarded with three A* grades in further maths, maths and physics.

Mark Lee (18), from Nettleham, who was this year awarded Secondary Student of the Year at the Lincolnshire Media Education Awards, is heading to Durham University where he will begin a four-year engineering course. Mark got A* grades in physics, maths, further maths and A-grades in chemistry, general studies and the new Extended Project Qualifi cation (EPQ). “My grades are much higher than I was hoping for. I was so nervous opening them,” he said. “The course I am doing is two years’ general engineering and then in my fi nal two years I can choose an engineering fi eld to specialise in. I’m not sure what I’m going to do after that.”

Also delighted with his results was Jason Metcalfe who got A* grades in maths, biology and physics and an A in chemistry. “These results are defi nitely what I was hoping for,” he said. “I am going to Leeds to read medicine with a view to becoming a doctor, possibly in a hospital’s A&E department.”

Headteacher Andy Stones said he was delighted with this year’s results. “Our A-level students are an exceptional group of young people who have worked so hard with their teachers to give themselves the best opportunity for the future. We are thrilled that every student has achieved what they set out to do. They can now look forward to the next phase of their lives. They all deserve to be congratulated and the whole school community wishes them well.”

The Times newspaper reporting on this year’s A-level results showed the William Farr School within the top 300 state schools in the country. The William Farr School has again excelled and congratulations must go to the students, teachers and headteacher of this amazing school.

LETTERS to the Editor . . . The Editor welcomes views on any topic of interest to your fellow Welton Residents. You can send your letters to: The Editor, Welton NEWS, c/o Parish Offi ce, 7 Lincoln Road, Welton LN2 3HZ, or to [email protected] You must include your name and address, but the address will not normally be published.

Dear EditorWe recently moved away from Welton after nineteen years; longer than either of us has lived anywhere, so obviously Welton had a lot going for it. It was a reluctant move but, of necessity with our advancing years, we really needed to be closer to our family.Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to say goodbye to as many people as we had hoped so this is partly an apology, although most knew of our plans. It turned out to be a very long goodbye

as we had hoped to go last year but it turned out to be a ‘false start’ and in fact we had said many goodbyes last May. Ironically, we did move a year to the day of our second date given last year. They say everything happens for a reason; last year we were planning on going to a village which turned out to have no buses (it did have a bus stop!) and one tiny village shop, so we consider it was a blessing in disguise. Our plans to downsize went out of the window and a bungalow may appear one day but at present we are really happy to be here, convenient (but not too close) to our sons.

We have met all the neighbours by default as after two weeks the cat decided to go AWOL so we spent three days and two nights trying to locate her. Everyone walking a dog put out an alert and we had to put posters round about thirty houses. However, she proved to be quite resourceful and cleverer than we thought

as she came back each night to where she had fallen over the brick wall (which I had thought was the safest part of the garden), and although we couldn’t get to her at fi rst, eventually Terry put together a ‘cat ladder’ of sorts and on the third night I coaxed her back. One way to meet the neighbours, but I don’t recommend it.

The garden is fast taking shape. Despite being an ‘old fogie’ Terry has tamed the jungle. Our granddaughter told us it was like living in a forest as we couldn’t see out of the downstairs windows. A skip is next on the agenda.

The winter job is to get rid of the dreaded ‘builder’s magnolia’ and put our own stamp on the house which I am looking forward to very much. I always said our Beck Hall house was going to be a hard act to follow but we seem to have found our ‘dream house’ once more.

drive more slowly in the winter months and that we generally drive faster at weekends. The fastest individual speed recorded was 70 mph outside the village hall on Monday 20th July but speeds of 65 mph were also recorded on Eastfi eld Lane and Hackthorn Road, all of them between 5pm and 6pm. Of course, the indicators did not identify the vehicles, which may have been from one of the emergency services.Traffic generally moved fastest on Eastfi eld Lane where 12% of all drivers exceeded the speed limit on one day (a Saturday) in May/June. On Hackthorn Road the fi gure was 11.4% on one Sunday in April. This is probably because both roads are exits to the village leading to unrestricted stretches. Overall, however, the average speed of all those above the limit on all the roads monitored was remarkably consistent at between 32-34 mph.Traffi c on each of the roads monitored tended to be less at weekends but not by much, perhaps refl ecting the relatively high number of retired people active during the working day. Although more than 27,000 vehicles were monitored during a two-week period on Ryland Road in July, even at the busiest locations at the busiest times, no more than 300 vehicles passed the monitor

Speeding in Welton: a problem or not?

Welton drivers will be aware that for the past six months a portable speed indicator has been in place from time to time on busy local roads, paid for by Welton NEWS. Unlike the two static speed warning indicators on Cliff Road and Hackthorn Road, the portable board collects information on all vehicles that pass it and this is collated in the form of reports to the parish council.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to take a look at the data relating to two, two-week periods covering Ryland Road (in both directions), Lincoln Road and Eastfi eld Lane as well as a single two-week period on Rivehall Avenue, Westhall Avenue and Hackthorn Road.

The results indicated general speed limit compliance with average speeds on all roads at all times below 30 mph. Overall, it also seemed that we

per hour. For most locations the peak was well below 100 vehicles per hour. By comparison, in 2014 almost 17,000 vehicles per day travelled the stretch of Wragby Road in Lincoln between Wolsey Way and the A158.Although the monitors provide interesting information it is hard to evaluate the data. Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership would only consider any formal enforcement action if the speed of the highest 15% of vehicles was in excess of 10% plus 2 mph above the speed limit, ie for all these locations 35 mph. Only the fastest 15% of traffi c on Ryland Road (33.3 mph), Eastfi eld Lane (34 mph) and Hackthorn Road (33.7 mph) approached this fi gure.On one hand, anyone recording a speed in excess of the limit deserves censure for placing themselves and others at unnecessary risk but, in practice, it seems that road users in Welton are probably no worse than any others at observing speed limits and possibly better. It is also hard

to assess how much the presence of the monitor itself affected driving behaviour. There seems no easy way to obtain realistic comparative data for other times and at this stage it is impossible to know whether speed limit observance has changed, for good or bad, over time, although this may be possible as the cycles of monitoring progress.

Overall, local residents should be pleased with the initiative of the parish council in installing the monitor but probably cautious about drawing too many conclusions. If anything the data tend to show that Welton drivers are generally law-abiding when it comes to speed. Bigger risks are probably posed by illegal parking and low driver competence. A campaign to photograph and report all instances of the former might be a worthwhile initiative. Any suggestions as to the latter would be gratefully received.

Burton, the Yorkshire woman who became a world champion cyclist in the 1960s. Five times world pursuit champion and thirteen times national champion, Beryl Burton’s accolades include former world record holder, former British record holder, an MBE and OBE. Beryl was one of the most astonishing sports people ever to have lived but, with her down to earth, no-nonsense approach to life and to success, she remains a mystery: but not any longer. In a fascinating and truly heart-warming production (and you don’t need to know anything about cycling to enjoy it) this funny and moving show tells the story of this remarkable woman. Tickets cost £9; concessions £8.

On 15th, 16th, 17th October the Phoenix Players present ‘Breaking the Code’ by Hugh Whitemore and on 30th October we have ‘A Fistful of Spaghetti’ by Hambledon Productions. Then on 13th November we’ll have the Amici Touring Group presenting ‘Outside Edge’.

On Thursday 3rd December we have ‘He Wore a Red Hat’ from New Perspectives, a festive-themed noir comedy, full of twists, turns and surprises. You’ll never look at Santa in quite the same way. The village has formed a group of amateur detectives to help solve local crimes. But when part-time unpublished poet Joshua Rogan’s applications are repeatedly turned down, he decides to take sleuthing into his own hands. Believing he’s one step ahead, he begins to piece together what he thinks is a series of related crimes, enlisting an intern as his put upon side-kick. But just when he thinks he’s onto something, a series of parcels arrive and he’s in for a big surprise. Join Joshua for a spot of sleuthing as he attempts to restore faith in the festive season. And maybe share a few poems. And possibly fall in love.

Dunholme Camera ClubI suppose we haven’t had too bad a summer in Lincolnshire. Now it’s time to get out and get some pictures ready for the camera club competitions in 2016; wow, here we are in September and I have already started to talk about 2016! At the camera club we have fi ve club competitions each year and to meet the criteria for each we like to take plenty of pictures. Although the competitions are only for fun and to get some feedback from the judges, the members also have the chance to win one of the cups up for grabs and someone will be the lucky recipient of the Photographer of the Year (POTY) cup; one special accolade for a lucky member.

On the theme of competitions, we start September with club competition, ‘Architecture’. I know that members will have some great entries as we had a night out earlier in the year to grab some

great images in and around Lincoln. Competition night is on 3rd September starting at 7.30pm, so come along to see the resulting images.

Our second meeting on 17th September will be a night when I will give some simple instruction for taking great portrait shots starting with the fl ash gun on your camera and fi nishing with a couple of studio lights to give some great shots of the sitter. Just in case anyone out there would like to be our sitter for the night, please do get in touch for a few more details. You don’t have to be a stunning young lady; you can be a more mature member of the community, say, a male with a wiry beard and some great character lines or a lady who would like to have a few pictures taken and would like to try her hand at sitting for us. If there are any readers who would like to come and have their picture taken then please get in touch. We do not take photographs other than of fully clothed

Next year we will be studying the Gospel of Matthew, which tells us so much about Jesus, from his birth, through his ministry, and his eventual death and resurrection. If you would like to learn more about this Good News, Community Bible Study is a really effective and accessible way of studying the Bible.

We meet every Wednesday (in term time) from 9.30am until 11.30am at the Old School Rooms, Dunholme. Our fi rst meeting of the term will be on 16th September when we will catch up with each other after the long summer break and register for the year. Patients’ and Doctors’ Association

Charges for PDA transportMy fi rst piece of news this month applies to everyone who uses the PDA transport scheme. As from 1st October the charge will be increased to 40p per mile. The charge has remained the same since April 2013. The reason behind our decision to increase the charge is that the increased demand for the service impacts directly on the amount of fund raising we have to do to top up the drivers’ payment to 45p per mile. The amount currently needed for this purpose is over £2,000 a year and this is constantly increasing. Charges for journeys to the Health Centre will be reviewed later in the year. We hope that everyone understands the reason for this increase.

WantedWelton and District Patients and Doctors Association is looking for a new chairman with effect from 22nd October as our current chairman is not standing for re-election. The duties of the role include: chairing the executive committee’s ten meetings a year, usually held on the fi rst Thursday of each month in the Health Centre; to provide

support to sub-committees (fund raising, transport and catering) as and when required; to liaise with the surgery in a patient participation group role and to maintain communication between the practice and its patients.Any patient aged 18 or over and registered at the Health Centre can volunteer to be nominated for this role. Further information can be obtained from the Health Centre Practice Manager on 862232. Full support will be given by the current chairman and the existing committee members. Please give this opportunity careful consideration as it is the ideal chance to become involved in a vital part of village life.

Autumn FayrePlans for the Autumn Fayre on Saturday 3rd October (2pm to 4.30pm) are now well advanced and our raffl e tickets are on sale from all drivers, several local shops and the Health Centre dispensary. We have lots of excellent prizes including a fi rst prize of £150 High Street vouchers which I’m sure we could all fi nd a use for. We are also hoping to sell tickets at the Co-op on Saturdays in September but this is not fi nalised at the time of submitting this article. The stalls at the fayre will include crafts,

art work with a display and sales by Welton Easy Art Group, cards, candles, paper craft, jewellery, wooden items, soft furnishings and much more. We still need bottles of wine for the wine or water stall or anything in a bottle or glass and anything suitable for the tombola. Bric-a-brac can be collected if you give me a call on 862570 or it can be brought to the hall from 9am on the morning of Saturday 3rd October. If you are a keen baker please make us a cake for the cake stall. Posters are up around the villages advertising this fund-raising event so please come along on the day and offer us your support. All monies raised on the day go towards providing extra equipment for the practice which will be of benefi t to all patients and also to help support the transport scheme which many of you use.

Community groups neededCharities and community groups are being encouraged to apply to be part of Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Champions scheme, which could see them raise hundreds of pounds. All Lincolnshire Co-op members are linked to a community champion, which is a good cause close to where they live. Every time a member shops using their dividend card in any Lincolnshire Co-op outlet where

points are issued, a donation from the community champions pot goes towards their local good cause.

The groups change every three months so lots of organisations can benefi t. If a member chooses, they can also sign up to give their donations to one group all year round. Typically, after every three month stint, around 80 local groups share in £45,000. Now, the Society’s Membership and Community team are looking for more groups to come forward and get involved.

“It’s a great chance for charities and community groups to get a fundraising boost.” said Lincolnshire Co-op’s Member Engagement Manager Richard Whittaker. “We know there must be lots of groups out there that could benefi t and it’s really simple to apply to be a community champion. Groups just have to fi ll out a short form and, if they’re chosen, they’ll be able to raise hundreds of pounds. The more our members shop in our outlets, the more the community champions raise, so if a charity or group rallies their supporters the total could be even more.”

For more on the Community Champions scheme, and how to apply, visit Lincolnshire Co-op’s website: www.lincolnshire.coop/communitychampions or pick up a form in our nearest store.

Refreshments will be served by Linda and Pat; thanks ladies. Committee members should note that there will be a brief meeting at 6.30pm just prior to the main meeting. Old School DunholmeAfter lengthy discussions and many changes the management committee and the trustees have now fi nalised the plans for the Old School refurbishment and extension. It has taken quite a while because we want to have a facility that can be used for as many uses as possible: children’s parties, business meetings, small businesses selling their wares, tea rooms, indeed anything that anyone wants to organise on the premises. The plans have been determined in such a way that the building will be adaptable to anyone’s needs and will be open to discussion once the alterations have been put in place. The plans allow for further additions and scope for anyone to set up either a short-term project or hire or suggestions for long-term ideas can to be put forward by members of the local community. However, this can only happen when the building is at a stage where it can accommodate any of

these ideas. In the very near future the plans will be submitted in a pre-planning application to West Lindsey District Council and we will inform residents of further developments as and when they happen.

Some of the early stages in the minor redevelopment of the Old School will include: the reduction of the front wall to provide a better view of the building; outside signage; cosmetic changes to brighten up the inside with a lick of paint and the old heavy-duty curtains will be removed and replaced with black-out blinds. We are currently looking at modernising the toilets but this will really depend on the cost as we do not want to spend money on items that may not be used when later and larger scale operations begin. The current main hall will be redecorated and the Dunholme Camera Club has agreed to place images on the walls to make the hall more inviting to visitors.

In the early stages if anyone or indeed any organisation would like to talk to us with regards to holding a daily/weekly event in the main hall such as sales days, starting up a tea room, even getting some local car boot/hall sales days going again, like we used to have in the 90s, then please do get in touch.

People in the wider community who would like to hire the Old School for their party/event should visit our Facebook page www.facebook.com/DOSC8 and hopefully ‘Like’ the page and secondly ‘Share’ the page. This way it will get it out to more people in the community and they can be informed of the progress as it happens and to show that the Old School is a lower cost alternative to other local halls etc.

You can contact us on 861172 and ask for Janice or contact us by the Facebook page and leave a message.

Welton Pre-SchoolWe are back for another academic year and we are so excited!Last term saw the unveiling of our brand new uniforms. This year, we are focusing on our children’s ideas and this year’s logo has been designed by one of our school leavers. The children were asked to draw something that they feel encompasses Welton Pre-school and their time with us. This particular child drew a very colourful caterpillar which we felt was very symbolic as the children embark on their primary school educational journeys and become beautiful, confi dent butterfl ies. We have also made a new change in that this year’s children can pick the colour of their uniform, continuing our focus on the voice of the child. We look forward to welcoming our newcomers and we cannot wait to get to know them. We hope that they will be very happy with us and are as eager to

learn as we are to teach them. Our team has been eagerly planning for the new term and we have some very exciting things planned. If you have a child coming up to or of pre-school age (two+ years) please pop in and see us. We would love to meet you and your little ones. Please contact the pre-school for more information on [email protected] or call 860077.

Neighbourhood Plan updateFollowing the statutory consultation on our neighbourhood plan it was necessary to implement a large number of changes. The plan was then submitted to a highly-respected independent consultant for an expert opinion who suggested a number of substantial changes. These were in addition to those already made and took into account the planning decisions affecting Welton that have been made over recent months. These changes are now almost complete but have changed the plan in such a way that for it to comply with regulations it will need to go through the consultation process once more. We are currently waiting for a report known as a Landscape and Character Assessment to be undertaken which, once complete, will be included in the new draft of the plan. This is expected in a few weeks.West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) recognises the importance of neighbourhood plans and how they can

To assist communities there is now a dedicated neighbourhood plan development offi cer who is working with us to ensure our plan will meet all the statutory requirements. Des’s CornerA married couple in their early 60s were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant. Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table. She said, “For being such an exemplary married couple and for loving each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish.”The wife said, “Oh, I would love to travel around the world with my darling husband.” The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! - two tickets for a world cruise on the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands. The husband thought for a moment: “Well, this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this will never come again so, I’m sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me.”His wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish. So the fairy waved her magic wand and poof! The husband became 92 years old.

The moral of the story: men who are ungrateful should remember that fairies are female.

Welton Moncé Family Twinning Group

We recently held our annual BBQ on the deck at Manor Park pavilion; members and guests enjoyed a very pleasant sunny and social evening having the opportunity to discuss our upcoming visit to Moncé over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

This year some 39 villagers from Welton and Dunholme will travel as a group by train, with others going independently by car. It promises to be really interesting with it being Moncé’s turn to hold the Comice, a smaller version of a fete and agricultural show. The Moncé twinners have organised a stand at the event and we have been requested to take Lincolnshire produce over with us for the locals to taste.

Our school, St Mary’s, is now developing very good links with the primary school in Moncé and we will be taking some presents from the school for their

counterparts over there. Unfortunately the school will be closed for the summer holidays so we will not be in a position to present them directly. Please save the date, Friday 13th November as we will be holding a ‘Call My Bluff’ wine tasting event, a repeat of the very successful one we put on last year. More details will be in next month’s magazine. We have a number of families/couples in Moncé looking to make twinning arrangements with Welton/Dunholme families. If you are interested in hearing more about it please contact us for an informal chat.

New Sports FacilitiesEarlier this year outline planning consent was given to a new development off Prebend Lane to provide market value houses, affordable housing and a Lace Housing Ltd facility together with a substantial recreation area.

The recreational area will provide a rugby pitch, tennis courts and a new cricket fi eld which will be sponsored by the England and Wales Cricket Board. A new pavilion is also planned. With the addition of these sporting benefi ts in the offi ng it is proposed that a community trust be formed to oversee the operation of these facilities. Trustees would be expected to have a keen interest in the sports identifi ed and a commitment to provide time and energy to make the project a successful addition to our village.

While it is early days, it is very important to have an involvement from the start of the development. Those villagers who may be interested can get more information about the project and the proposed trust by contacting me on 861118.

North Shore golf course was in excellent condition and the weather was very warm and not too windy. The food when we fi nished was very good with a choice of either fi sh and chips or steak pie. The size of the portions was diffi cult for some of us to handle.Tom Allan won with 39 points and has now had his handicap cut to 11; well done, Tom. Bob Boulton was second on 28 points just beating Rob Bastow and Andy Hall on count-back. The twos’ pot continues to grow although a small group faked winning it. Rob Bastow won nearest the pin and will now provide next month’s prize.Next month we are at Laceby Golf Club.

The outdoor bowling season fi nished at the end of August with the club hosting a 3-wood pairs open competition. I will report on this in the next issue of the NEWS.

We held the club pairs competition on the 9th August. Sixteen people took part and the weather was very kind to us. The pairing for this event was drawn at random so we did not know who we would be playing with; it made for an interesting day’s bowling. The competition consisted of three sessions playing eight ends in each, with a break after the second session for coffee and cake. Very welcome it was too; the sponge cake made by Jennie was especially nice. After this break it was back on the

green to play the fi nal session which would determine the overall winner as there were three pairs with a chance of winning. The overall winners were David Goodliffe and Al Aiton with runners-up Janet Bryant-Wells and Sue Hilditch. This competition has a new trophy in memory of Pete Gill who sadly passed away at the end of last season and his family asked that we did something at the club to remember him by. As Pete was a great supporter of the club we decided that this would be a fi tting way to remember him. At the end of the bowling we sat down to a late lunch which was provided by Pam and her helpers. It was a cold ham salad with all the trimmings and our thanks go to all those who provided the food and helped to make the day such a success.Unfortunately we have had mixed competition results this season, having to withdraw from the Lincoln & District League after many years taking part in

this league. Our players had found it hard going playing 25 ends in this league and we have struggled to put twelve players out each week. We will now look to fi ll this void by joining the West Wold Pairs league and having a fun league within the club so we will still be playing bowls but not as competitively as before. We have done a little better in the West Wold league fi nishing midway in the evening league and within the top three in the afternoon league. Unfortunately none of our players made it through to the fi nals of the West Wold competitions as they all went out at the semi-fi nal stages; well done to them for getting that far and hopefully better luck next season. We did make it to the fi nal of the Eileen Wilmot Shield which we play on the 26th August against Binbrook at Wragby. The result of this game will be in the next issue of the NEWS.
