As a health care professional, keeping our hands clean is
the primary weapon we can use to avoid the high risk of
spreading infection.
An initiative was organized by the Infection Prevention and
Control unit by which they to educated staff on proper
hand-washing. This awareness campaign was presented by
Mr. Sandile Gcabashe from Kleenex.
Mr. Gcabashe recommended that all health care institutions
should use antibacterial soap and a closed up system
instead of the topping up system that is currently used in
most hospitals. The following were the tips that he shared
with the staff :
Use soap and warm water when washing your hands
Use paper to wipe your hands, this helps in removing left
bacteria
Do not use warm hair dryer as bacteria loves warm
places.
5 Easy steps in washing
hands:
1. Wet your hands with clean
running water.
2. Soap wash your hands and
wrists with liquid and rub your
hands together to make lather
and scrub well, be sure to
scrub the back of your hands, between your fingers and
under your nails.
3. Wash thoroughly for at least 20 seconds
4. Proper rinse your hands under running water
5. Dry well using paper towel
