Dear Sisters & Brothers In Christ, Grace and Peace be with now and always.

Moving toward summer! There are a lot of things going on: Our Shared Ministry Youth will leave on a Mis-

sion Trip to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, July 6th and return on the 11th; Our Shared Ministry outdoor

worship this year will be at Wesley on July 20th; please be ready to offer help and hospitality that Sunday! Es-

pecially this summer, our Summer Monday Fundays will begin on July 14 th and continue on July 21 st, 28 th,

August 4 th, 11 th & 18 th; please sign up to help out for this evolution of our Family Week!; Our “Imagine No

Malaria” campaign continues, perhaps you can offer support; continuing coin challenge, need to hire a new

youth pastor with Community and First UMC, ongoing worship and well, you get the picture; we need your

energy, time and support wherever you feel called to serve!

The other day Gretchen and I were talking and thinking about the Gershwin song, ‘Summer time and the living

is easy.’ There seems to be so much in our lives to take us out of that mind set of easy living. How can we get

into our faith deeply enough this summer that we experience living easy in our faith and responding lovingly

in God’s good creation?

There are so many issues on my mind and in my prayers these days, such as will we have enough volunteers to

carry off the Summer Monday Fundays, the July 20th service, will we be able to make it financially through the

summer and then the bigger stuff: saying good bye to Pastors Sandra and Bruce as they move on while saying

hello to Pastor Ted as he comes on board; and even bigger stuff: the natural disasters (tornadoes) in the U.S.

and abroad, the continuing conflicts in Syria, Iraq, in central Africa in several nations, the eastern Ukraine and

Crimea, the disabling effects of displacement on refugees and poverty globally, the ongoing disability of our

Congress, the overwhelming issues of immigration and the wave of youth and children that have sought refuge

here, the continuing wrangling in the United Methodist church over the issues of biblical interpretation, the

Act of Repentance by United Methodists at Sand Creek, in Eastern Colorado, to children in our own town with

little or no food, yes and all the way to the issues of our oceans, bees, clean air and water. Whew!

You might wonder how this does not overwhelm me, and us. While sometimes it does and sometimes we deny

our involvement or culpability, my strategy is to hold all in prayer and ask for God’s presence to be made

manifest in all instances and to ask how I may offer my service, my prayers for the healing and transformation

of the world. When things get too bad, then I start a short breath prayer like “Jesus Christ Son of God, mercy

on me, a sinner”; or “Jesus Christ, you are the light of the world, fill my mind with your peace, and my heart

with your love”. Take a breath, say part of the phrase and breath out with a bit more of the phrase and so on till

you enter into the peace offered in these prayers. Staying close to Jesus and loving in response to what is going

on around me helps to center me and ground me in Christ and in my faith. Please join me in prayer and center-

ing in Christ in all our circumstances this summer and beyond.

The Caring Corner There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart. ~Celia Thaxter

We, the children of God, have so much to be thankful for, and that is what this column is all about, caring for one another in times of grief, illnesses, joy, and celebrations.

The WOW’s celebrated by having a great meal together. They found the food at Framing-ham Beer Works to be tasty. Unfortunately, there were many things going on that day for many of the regular attendees, so they only had: Marge, Fran, Margaret, Nan, Florence

and Edna. They will be driving to Sergio’s Restaurant in Marlborough for their next gath-ering. The restaurant selection for August has not been chosen yet. Wesley extends their love and sympathy to the family of Winnie Homer. Winnie is now

with God, her husband Bill and son Herbert. We thank God for her quiet, yet faithful presence in our lives and congregation.

Mary Hackett, a proud grandmother, shared that her oldest granddaughter Maiya gradu-ated from Algonquin Regional High School and will be attending Howard University. Marge Danforth is once again traveling, this time to Nebraska, to visit her son Alan and

family. We pray that the tornadoes don’t decide to visit that area of our country, but if one was to blow through, Marge would greet it with a smile and faith that all would be well. Greetings were sent from Rev. Ernest Belisle, Wesley's former pastor, along with hellos

from Rev. Dick and Jane Thompson. All are doing well, and it was nice to spend time with them at the New England Conference.

Marie and Chuck Frasier received much love and praise during Conference from many people on their Lifetime Discipleship Award. They chose to donate their money to the “Imagine No Malaria” campaign.

Rich and Lin Olsen had a fun visit with daughter Elizabeth and her family in Minnesota. Both of the grandchildren are growing, and we are sure they had a full schedule of love

and playtime together. We welcome our two newest members to the family of God through confirmation: Anya Yakovlev Logan and Gabriela Carrasquillo. They each wrote a faith statement that ex-

pressed their feelings on their personal faith and where they were at that time in their journey. I commend both of them for their beautiful, meaningful statements. Wesley members and friends are proud of you both.

Please continue to pray for those in our congregation who need our love and support; es-pecially Diane Lusk. Her daughter is battling cancer in Texas. Diane has been traveling

back and forth to Texas the past few months and will need to stay longer this next trip back. Phil and Lisa LaVigne are off for an extended stay at their retirement home in North Caro-

lina. They will be having a mini family reunion with their sons while adding some finish-ing touches to their home.

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening

to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a

waste of time." John Lubbock

Summer vacation, trips, reunions will be happening before we meet again. We would love to hear how you relaxed this summer and share it with our congregation because we are a community of caring people.

God Bless you until we meet again,

Charlotte Peterson

MOVING FORWARD…

July/August 2014

And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is

my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward

(Matthew 10:42 NIV).

Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty…The small act of giving or

receiving makes you a true apprentice [learner]. You won’t lose out on a thing

(Matthew 10, The Message).

Jesus gives His disciples some practical advice concerning their reception by the people to whom they are be-

ing sent. A cup of cold water is the smallest act of courtesy possible, especially when it is given with a smile.

To give someone a cup of cold water is to serve that person, as God would have us to do. Giving a cup of

cold water would be like holding open the elevator for someone. In other words, it is a sample of the smallest

act of charity.

Analogy between water and serving people as God’s children:

Both water and being served by Christians are blessings from God.

Both water and being served by Christians fulfill a need.

Both water and being served by Christians refresh us.

Both water and being served by Christians aid in providing life.

Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many

(Matthew 20:28). It is important for us to use our blessings, to the best of our ability, to serve others. Are

you serving others by giving them a cup of cold water? Let us join hands in faith, in love, and in peace; and

let us move forward as servants of God. (Just a Cup of Cold Water; Bible study on service; Biblestudyguide.org)

Blessings,

Marie Frasier, Lay Leader

of Personal Finance and Investing with Phil LaVigne & Glenn Opela

I once was walking through my place of employment and saw a person’s computer screen with charts of the

stock market and many stocks listed. I asked him a simple, but very loaded question, "What stocks do you

like, and what are you invested in?" That simple question led to what I call an investment club/group at work.

We traded ideas and thoughts many times a week. It also got others involved because they heard us talking

and joined in.

Here at Wesley UMC, we have hosted FPU (Financial Peace University; a course on how to manage income

verses expenses, but more importantly a mindset/behavior on how to manage your life financially). Within the

course, it states that one should plan 12% return per year investing your hard earned money, but does not tell

or teach how!

Well, there is no guarantee or easy way to invest and get 12% return per year. But there is one sure way not to

get a 12% return, and that is to NEVER try. I would like to start a group (club or whatever you want to call it)

that will start with the basics and work up to actual investing and discussing ideas where to invest, what to

Worship…and Laugh July-August 2014 Reflections on Genesis 21:1-18 It happens as God had said. The aged couple, Abraham and Sarah, has a son and Abraham names the boy Isaac, which

in Hebrew means laughter. However, there is another child in the camp, Ishmael, the child of Abraham and Hagar, Sarah's much younger Egyptian maid. That child was Sarah's own idea, when it appeared likely that Sarah would never have a child of her own.

One day, Sarah sees Ishmael "playing," and she cannot stand his very existence. The word often trans-lated "playing" is more literally "laughing," the same word on which the name Isaac is based. Now laughter has turned to fury and rejection. Sarah demands that Abraham "throw out that child and her slave mother, too."

How easily does our gracious laughter turn to angry arrogance? God Has Made Laughter for Me, Sorry About

You! How very human we are, when we leave God out of our calculations and take control of our lives to the exclusion of others and of God. Such an old story, and yet how current it finally is, offering a lesson that we still have yet to learn. www.patheos.com/Progressive-Christian/God-Has-Made-Laughter-John-Holbert-06-16-2014

If you are interested, please contact Phil LaVigne or Glenn Opela. Everyone is welcome, but I do hope that I

can interest the young to start here and now in this adventure. I am going to start with a course from the late

Muriel Siebert which is taught in the New York City school system. There will be no fees to pay, just your

time… Also, I am hoping to try and use audio/video software (maybe Skype) on the computer so one does not

need to attend meetings at the church. One can simply connect to the meeting and hear and see everything

that's going on. Dates and times will be set by the group.
