Wesley Acres, located in Des Moines, Iowa, is a WesleyLife Community for Healthy Living, and part of the Des Moines-based network of services that includes the Dahl Adult Day Center, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels, WesleyLife at Home, WesleyLife Hospice, and Wesley Wheels.

WesleyLifeWesleyLife is a faith-based, nonprofit organization that has been serving older

adults for nearly 70 years. The organization is headquartered in Johnston, Iowa, and offers seven Communities for Healthy Living in Iowa, along with eight comprehensive service networks serving 15 counties. Those networks offer a range of services tailored to the needs of older adults, including adult day centers, short-term rehabili-tation, hospice, nutritious meals, transportation, personal services, and home healthcare.

There is also our Living Well series of events throughout the year, each designed to educate and entertain. During the summer months, Wesley Acres hosts the “Wesley Acres on the

Lawn Series,” with Tai Chi, the Metro Arts Jazz in July Concert, Qigong, and Yoga.

The Dahl Adult Day Center, located on the Wesley Acres campus in Des Moines, ensures individuals who need assistance and involve-ment during the day enjoy a renewed sense of independence, while also receiving the support and encouragement they need. More than just a place to spend the day, the Dahl Adult Day Cen-ter provides an environment focusing on what participants “can” do by giving them a purposeful and fulfilling day.

Caring and compassionate team membersTeam members work closely with each partic-ipant, along with loved ones, to create a per-sonalized program tailored to each individual. They take time to get to know participants on a a more personal basis, discovering their special interests, supporting them in their challenges, and encouraging independence in mind and spirit. This approach creates an enriching envi-ronment for every person we serve —an envi-ronment where individuals are able to live life to the fullest.

Dahl Adult Day Services - A WesleyLife Adult Day Center

Who can participate?Adult day services are available for any adult age 45 or older who desires social interaction and involvement with other adults or who has experienced a decreased ability to accomplish daily tasks independently. This includes persons with memory loss, mobility challenges or other health concerns. Each center provides a coordi-nated program of professional and compassion-ate services for adults in a community-based group setting.

What does a typical day look like?Every day is different, but most participants enjoy the opportunity for social time with oth-ers; and participation in a coordinated program of professional and compassionate services.

Life-enriching social events provide interac-tion with other participants and are tailored to specific needs. Participants enjoy community speakers, music, cooking classes, creative art projects, exercise sessions, and more.

Transportation services can be arranged, giving caregivers peace of mind that their loved ones are traveling to and from the Dahl Adult Day Center safely. Participants also enjoy a sense of independence when they are not relying on a caregiver for transportation.

Meals and refreshments are delicious and dietitian-approved according to each person’s nutritional needs. Mealtime also provides an opportunity for participants to feel productive as they help with preparation and cleanup.

Personal care assistance includes regular health assess-ments and provides assistance with activities of daily living, including bathing. Weight, blood pressure, podiatry care, dietary habits and cognitive skills are regularly monitored, with changes reported to each person’s doctor and family members. Nurses collaborate with participants’ doctors, ad-hering to all orders regarding medications, diet and overall health and well-being.

Daily events provide exercise and mental interaction for all participants, helping maintain physical strength and flexibility, as well as mental acuity.

WesleyLife Meals on Wheels

Every day, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels directly supports the health, vitality and independence of more than 900 adults living in Greater Des Moines through delivery of a nutritious meal to their front doors, with close to 230,000 meals delivered each year.

All meals are heart healthy, low sodium and follow specific diets. Our dedicated team of drivers and volunteers deliver meals between 10:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, with frozen weekend packages available for delivery on Friday.

The WesleyLife Meals on Wheels program de-livers meals in a fleet of MINIs (a small econ-omy car), which was made possible through a partnership between two nonprofit health and wellness organizations, UnityPoint Health-Des Moines and WesleyLife.

Drivers deliver so much more than a meal. Our courteous drivers are trained to deliver warm hellos, while checking on the safety of their clients. Because a driver may be the only person a client sees during the day, it is not uncommon for drivers to find a client in need of

immediate help due to a fall or medical emer-gency.

Front door deliveryMeals are prepared in our own kitchen and hand-delivered by drivers and volunteers, Monday through Friday, on 22 routes through-out Greater Des Moines. Friday deliveries include weekend meals.

Wesley Wheels

Enjoy the freedom to go where you want to go - whether it’s a concert, out to eat, running errands, attending church, going to the airport or visiting the doctor.

Whenever you want go, we’re at your service. Wesley Wheels is a full-service transportation company providing accessible, scheduled (nonmedical emergency) one-way or round-trip transportation for older adults.

Door-through-door serviceOur drivers help passengers through the doors of their residences and destinations, as needed.

This type of dignified service includes several levels of as-sistance from opening doors, providing verbal guidance, physical support up and down a step or curb, assistance with loading and unloading of mobility devices, to helping with packages.
