Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have a slight under-bite,otherwise, my teeth are actually quite straight.I had braces on my top teeth at a young ageand as I grew up my under-bite worsened. Thisunder-bite has resulted in some unnatural wearand chipping on a couple of my top teeth. Doyou have any non-surgery solutions available?

Dear Ted, there are many options for fixingunderbites that are non-surgical but I cannotcomment on your options until I havecompleted an examination and x-ray visit.Sometimes orthodontics can correct yourproblem other times crowns can be used tochange your bite. So surgery is always the lastoption considered. It is important toremember that once significant wear andchipping has occurred, the teeth that causedthis chipping also need to be corrected torecover the space that was lost from these teetherupting in to the chipped areas.

Dear Dr. Winter, I had a tooth break at thegumline. I really don’t want a bridge as I haveheard they have to shave down the other teethand those teeth will be weakened. I am alsoconcerned that I might need bone grafting tohave an implant. What is your opinion aboutplacing implants the same day the tooth comesout? Can this help me avoid a bone graft?

Dear John, the ability to place an implant theday the tooth is removed is dependent onseveral factors. First the remaining boneshould be intact and thicker than 1.5 mm sothat there is good blood supply to fill in thegap between the implant and the remainingtooth socket. Next there should be goodstabilization of the implant and if it can not beplaced with good insertion torque, it may bebetter to graft the socket and come back in 3months to place the implant after bone fill hasoccurred. The literature supports both means

of placing implants but it is still dependentupon clinician skill, bone quality and quantityand cosmetic expectations of the patient.

We would be happy to perform a secondopinion or comprehensive examination andx-ray visit for our readers! Please call us at414-464-9021 to schedule your visit. Weinvite you to visit our new website atwww.hamptondentalassociates.com Forphotos and videos of our dentistry andinformation about implants and cosmetics. We look forward to meeting you!

BY MELINDA MYERSGARDENING EXPERT, TV/RADIO HOST AND AUTHORWhat a growing season it’s been! If you

enjoy digging in the dirt as much I do, you knowhow long it’s taken to get your garden and land-scape looking right. Since we’re well into thegrowing season, I’d like to share what you cando to revitalize your garden, along with a fewplanting ideas that work well in this region andwill shape the look of your landscape into thefall, and seasons to come.

If you’re thinking about adding new plant-ings or moving existing plants, start by making aplan. Know what type of soil you have, and keepin mind that some plants prefer sandy, fast-drain-ing soil and do not tolerate heavy, poorlydrained soil. Other plants are more adaptableand are less particular about their growing con-

ditions including how much sun they get.Visualize the colors you’d like to see in yourlandscape as the summer progresses and keepin mind that different plants flower at differenttimes. Draw a sketch of what your landscapelooks like now, including flowers and their colors, and draw another sketch of how you would likeit to look. For example – what colors would youlike to see by this fall?

As for proper plant selection – it’s simple:choose the right plant for the right location! Agood way to start is to select plants that arenative to the region. These plants will thrive morereadily than exotics. If you’d rather spare theexpense of buying plants again next year, go forthe perennials, which will come up again in theyears to come. Native, low-growing plants alsorequire less pruning. The planting guide atwww.atc-GrowSmart.com is a good resource forhelping you select these types of plants. Theguide includes native grasses and flowers thatare ideal, whether you’re planting them underan electric transmission line or the garden out-side your back door. Print this guide and take itto your local garden center or nursery, alongwith your sketched plan.

Once you’ve purchased the plants you’dlike, you’ll need to add mulch. Your local gardencenter or nursery can advise you on the properamount and type you’ll need, based on your

plan. Mulch the soil with shredded leaves, ever-green needles, woodchips or other organic mat-ter to conserve moisture. Mulching also keepsroots cool, suppresses weeds and improves thesoil as the mulch decomposes. Wait to fertil-ize…late-season fertilization can stimulate late-season growth that is less winter-hardy. Nextspring, if you need to fertilize, use low-nitrogen,slow-release fertilizer that won’t burn plants, even in a drought. Plus, they promote slow, steady growth that is less susceptible to pestsand needs less water.

And finally, keep in mind that there arewater-wise approaches to gardening. Thesestrategies will help minimize the amount of waterthat your plants need, and how much you willactually use. Where possible, install rain barrelsto capture the rain from your roof or directly fromthe sky. Apply water directly to the soil usingsoaker hoses and drip irrigation. Remember towater thoroughly and less frequently to encour-age deep, drought-tolerant roots. And alwayswater early in the morning, when possible, toreduce the amount of water lost to evaporation.

Best of luck, and happy growing!Melinda Gardening expert, TV/radio host, author &

columnist Melinda Myers has more than 30years of horticulture experience and has writtenover 20 gardening books, including Can’t MissSmall Space Gardening and the MidwestGardener’s Handbook. She hosts The GreatCourses “How to Grow Anything” DVD seriesand the nationally syndicated Melinda’s GardenMoment segments. Myers is also a columnist andcontributing editor for Birds & Blooms magazine. Her web site is www.melindamyers.com.

Area residents who may have hadtree trimming occur in the electric transmissionright-of-way can learn about the type of vegeta-tion that attracts small animals, birds and butter-flies and download a native species plantingguide by visiting www.atc-GrowSmart.com.
