The Mostar Bridge The Mostar Bridge was a very famous and historical bridge before its destruction in 1993 during the war in Bosnia and Hercegovina (part of the former Yugoslavia). The elegant bridge spanned the River Neretva and was designed by the Ottoman (Turkish) architect Mimar Hayruddin. It was completed in 1566 after nines years of building and the surrounding town became a thriving trading center. The bridge was 29 meters in length and stood at a height of 20 meters, a classic example of a single span, stone arch bridge and was an example of advanced technology in its time. It became a World Heritage site during the twentieth century..1993() Mimar Hayruddin 915662920

The Palace basement halls From seaside bronze doors enter into the Diocletian's Palace basement halls. It retain a strong sense of grandeur in spite of the many stalls selling local jewelry and crafts.
The ceremonial entrance court is the Peristil (Peristyle), a rectangle measuring 35 X 13m and a few steps below the level of the surrounding streets. The longer sides are lined by six granite columns and two piers with Corinthian capitals; the columns are linked by arches decorated with a stone frieze. In the northeast corner is the small Renaissance church of St Rok, dating from the 16th century. The western side of the rectangle is enclosed by several medieval buildings which fit within the ancient columns. The Peristil

The first building was destroyed by the Tartrs in 1242, then rebuilt some years later; in 1880 a severe earthquake destroyed it. The building you can visit today, was restored after the earthquake, in the Neo-Gothic style and added a monumental pair of 105m-high bell towers.

Old Town Gate (under renovation) (Kamenita Vrata) ()
The Old Town Gate (Kamenita vrata) now is a shrine to virgin Mary, where you can light a candle and, as the locals believe, your wish will be granted. Please be silent, even if just passing through the Gate. The portrait of Mary is said to be sacred, because it is the only thing that survived the large fire in 1731.

There are 99 stone steps leading up to the church. Traditionally it is considered good luck for the groom to carry his bride up the steps on the day of their wedding before ringing the bell and making a wish inside the church.
