It was a dark and stormy night. Not really, but I’ve always wanted to start a story with that lead-in. Speaking of storytellers, though, how about the incredible movies featured at Twin Cities Film Fest for 9 days in October? The festival staff did a great job bringing unique major and independent films to the ShowPlace ICON Theatre – including the local premiere of Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence’s new movie, Silver Linings Playbook (which opens nationwide Nov. 21). In case you missed it at the Fest, grab a drink at Lobby Lounge and enjoy this or any blockbuster opening at ShowPlace ICON during the holidays.

The Shops at West End is the place to see and be seen. The rebirth of an old favorite, Figlio, provides the perfect place to meet friends, old and new. Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill is bringing more and more national musicians to its stage. And Raku Modern Japanese Cuisine is set to open its sushi bar in November.

This issue of Compass is packed full of entertaining ideas, recipes, beauty tips and new happenings at The Shops at West End, including a brief bio of future tenant Brush Studio. It also includes our age-appropriate gift picks for the holidays or any upcoming special event.

As autumn turns to winter, and the snow and temperatures begin to fall, I welcome you to come warm up with some retail therapy at The Shops at West End. Whether you’re shopping for holiday or birthday gifts, football party snacks, or an outfit for a night on the town, our stores have the perfect fit for any occasion.

Remember to have fun at the West End this holiday season, but stay safe. One can never say it enough, don’t drink and drive. Cabs run on regular intervals from West End Boulevard in the evening and are happy to get you home safely. Your car will be here waiting for you in the morning.

Cheers!

Since 2007, Apricot Lane has grown around the country while using a strategy rarely done in the fashion industry – offer a national chain of franchises with a local boutique feel.

Kristine Haas of Lakeville, MN, was ready to be her own boss. After working corporate sales and marketing for a number of years, she decided a retail boutique would be a great opportunity to take the leap to business ownership. While considering various business models, she wanted to chose one that would offer flexibility and corporate support. After extensive research, Haas discovered that Apricot Lane Boutique was the perfect fit!

“I love Apricot Lane Boutique because of the unique shopping experience it offers guests. There’s nothing like it and this is the first in the Twin Cities,” said Haas.

Apricot Lane features celebrity-inspired fashions and

designer labels and carries an impressive collection of jewelry, handbags, and accessories to create the hottest looks – all for an affordable price! In true boutique fashion, the store reminds customers of their ever-changing supply motto: “If you see it, buy it, because it won’t be here next week.”.

Apricot Lane Boutique also sets itself apart from other chain retailers because it is locally owned. “We make all the buying decisions which allows us to stay on top of trends that are current and realistic for women,” said Haas. “And, because of the diversity of the styles, Apricot Lane appeals to both mothers and daughters.”

Kristine also appreciated the corporation’s support of international, regional and local causes, including 3Strands Global, a fashion brand whose profits benefit victims of sex trafficking.

“Knowing I can make a difference with my store will make all the work worth it,” Haas replied. “By helping charities, as well as women find a style that is uniquely their own, it’s a win-win. I’m ready to see where this new endeavor can take me and my customers.”

Figlio, the iconic eatery that spent more than two decades in Uptown Minneapolis, opened September 24 in its new space at The Shops at West End.

Kaskaid Hospitality, known for CRAVE restaurants re-established the vibrant staple of the Twin Cities dining scene, well-known as the place for first dates, nights out with friends and killer Italian cuisine.

The “new” Figlio has been designed to offer three distinct dining environments. The entry features a recreated circular bar area for individuals looking for a vibrant social scene. The dining area offers a welcoming space perfect for business lunches and family dinners. And the private dining space is ideal for client presentations and family celebrations.

Award-winning chef J.P. Samuelson has continued the Figlio legacy by staying true to its signature dishes while also introducing a new Northern Italian and Mediterranean-inspired menu. Figlio enthusiasts will be happy to see many original favorites on the menu including calamari,

carpaccio, wings, tortellini, banana cake and death by chocolate.

Figlio, known as the ultimate Happy Hour destination, continues their tradition with $3 drinks daily during Happy Hour and all day on Sundays. To learn more, visit www.figlio.com.

Gluten for PunishmentFor people with a gluten allergy, dining out can be very frustrating. In fact, people with celiac disease sometimes avoid eating in restaurants just to avoid the hassle. See page 10 for a primer on celiac disease.

After being recently diagnosed with celiac disease, I quickly learned just how difficult going out to eat really was. I became frustrated and crabby, and tested the patience of the people who were dining with me. With time, dining out became much easier. I learned to frequent restaurants where the menus and staff were helpful and knowledgeable. After reading materials my doctor gave me and conducting my own research, I am now able to recognize menu items that could potentially irritate my system. I quickly learned what I loved and what I’d never order again when going out to eat. Now, going out to eat is fun again!

BELOW ARE SOME HELPFuL TiPS WHEN DINING OUT, WHETHER YOU HAVE LOTS OF EXPERIENCE OR ARE NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH CELIAC DISEASE.

EAt bEForE you go out. the hungrier you are, the more likely you are to make the wrong decision. If you don’t have time to snack on something beforehand, bring some fruit or gluten-free crackers to munch on while everyone else is eating from the breadbasket. I know it may feel weird, but it will make your dining out experience more enjoyable for everyone!

KNoW thE glutEN-FrEE dIEt. this means not only knowing which ingredients to avoid, but also where they’re likely to be hidden, so you can avoid cross-contamination. Sauces are especially tricky, so know your stuff!

rESEArch the restaurant ahead of time. this will help you determine what you can order or what questions you may have about a particular item. Some restaurants will have their gluten-free items listed on their menu, and others will require you to do more research. If the menu items aren’t

listed gluten-free, I always email the restaurant ahead of time, just to make sure I can find something safe to eat.

Tell your server about your allergy. Inform your server of your allergy and have them make the chef aware. Ask the server if he/she has any suggestions. you’ll be surprised at how much they know and how seriously they’ll take your allergy.

hAvE quEStIoNS prEpArEd. Always ask your server to tell the chef that you have a gluten allergy, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. here are some things you can ask:

• Are there croutons on the salad? can you please leave them off?

• What’s in the salad dressing? Is it made from scratch?

• do you make the soup from scratch? What ingredients were used?

• has the food been marinated in any sauce?

• What ingredients are in this sauce?

• has the food been dusted with flour before being sautéed or fried?

• do you use the same oil for French fries as you do other breaded foods?

• Are your mashed potatoes from a mix, or from real potatoes?

• What is the crust made of in this dessert?

As always, check with your physician if you think you might have a gluten allergy. he or she can make recommendations based on your exact diagnosis.

you didn’t choose to get a gluten allergy or celiac disease, but if you choose carefully off the menu, you can still enjoy life. you may be surprised at how good living gluten-free makes you feel and discover new foods you never thought about before.

PEOPLE CHOOSE GLUTEN-FREE DIETS FOR VARIOUS REASONS, BUT FOR THOSE WITH CELIAC DISEASE, IT’S A NECESSARY WAY OF LIFE.

what is celiac disease? According to celiaccentral.org, the National Foundation for celiac Awareness, celiac disease is a genetic disorder or autoimmune disorder where the tissues of the body are attacked by the immune system. consuming gluten interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food and damages the villi, a part of the small intestine. problems such as malnourishment, cancer, osteoporosis, type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases can occur when nutrients do not get absorbed into the bloodstream.

celiac disease can be brought on by stressful, physical and/or emotional events in a person’s life such as divorce, loss of a family member or surgery. there are nearly 300 symptoms associated with celiac disease. the most common are gastrointestinal, such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and non-intestinal, such as anemia, itchy skin rash, migraine headaches and bone/joint pain, to name a few.

other groups of people who may be affected by gluten include children with autism or with Adhd, people with gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, and still others who believe that gluten-free food is healthier.

CeliaC disease FaCts:

• An estimated 3 million Americans across all races, ages and genders suffer from celiac disease.

• It is estimated that 85% of Americans who have celiac disease are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with other conditions.

• there are No pharmaceutical cures for celiac disease.

• A 100% gluten-free diet is the only existing treatment for celiac today.

• A positive attitude, 100% of the time, helps celiacs create a gluten-free lifestyle for themselves and their affected family members.

Have you seen an increase of patients with celiac disease over the last five years?

Yes, whenever anemia is diagnosed along with gastrointestinal distress, a clinician always suspects celiac disease. We have a celiac packet which we provide to new patients. We didn’t have this five years ago, since we just didn’t see that many cases.

How do people get tested for celiac disease?

There are two ways to get tested. Patients can have a blood test or a biopsy. The biopsy is done through an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

What types of foods do people with celiac disease need to be careful with?

Celiacs cannot have grains which have gluten (wheat, barley and rye). There is a special grain called triticale, which is cross-bred with wheat, that also needs to be eliminated. One of the hardest things is finding non-wheat additives to food, as many condiments have wheat starch to thicken them or add to the flavor. These include wheat starch, bran, germ hydrolyzed gluten.

What advice do you give to people when dining out?

Eating out is a big challenge. Make certain you talk to the server about your gluten allergy or call the manager over if it seems the server is too casual with your requests. If you are really in a bind for something to eat, stick with potatoes, refried/black beans with corn tortillas, omelets or a steak with sweet potatoes. Yum!

For people who don’t have celiac disease but are doing the gluten-free diet, is it a safe way to lose weight and stay healthy?

I am not really sure why the gluten-free diet has caught on, especially for weight loss. Perhaps, people who have weight problems eliminate most of the wheat-based junk food, pastries, fast food, pizza and the higher calorie food. Of course people feel better when they are not eating those foods, and they lose weight. If people are trying to lose weight with a gluten-free diet, they still have to be careful with the overall calories.

Party Central

Getting ready to throw a party? Whom should you invite? What should you prepare? Should it be a sit-down or a buffet meal, or should it just be snacks? How much room do you have? What can you do to have people talking about your party for days to come? Planning the party can be just as much fun as the party itself! To make it easier, we have assembled tips and tricks to planning a successful party that will make yours memorable for some time to come.

Be ORGAnIzEDno matter what type of party you are having, organization is the key – be organized from start to finish. Having a clear understanding of what you want to accomplish, organization and a set timetable to help you get everything done will help you enjoy your party as much as your guests will. Know your time limits and be realistic about how much time you really have to plan for your party. Do not try to do the shopping, prep food, clean the house and have everyone over the same day. You will be too tired to enjoy your party and run the risk of being behind schedule. Instead do your shopping one to two days before the party. Choose recipes that you can make in advance. Prepare as much food as you can the day before, or morning of, your party. Save additional time by filling in your menu with prepared food and desserts from the bakery and deli departments at Rainbow. Or, if you’re looking to have the work done for you, catering from restaurants such as CRAVe is another option.

DECORATEWhen you invite guests into your home the environment should be welcoming. You do not need to hire a professional to create the perfect party mood; you can find great accent touches by visiting Parmida Home and Anthropologie at The Shops at West End.

Get HELPThe best party planners know they cannot do it all. Enlist the help of friends or family. Give them specific tasks and responsibilities for pre-party, during the party, and to help clean up after the party. Don’t be afraid to give suggestions if someone offers to bring food.

To raise the bar on your next party consider hiring a bartender. Hiring a private bartender can really take a lot of pressure off of you and make your party something that will be talked about for days to come. A good bartender can help you determine how many alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to buy, will set up before the party, and will clean up at the end of the party. If you are having cocktails, ask your bartender to create a signature cocktail for your party based on a theme or to compliment the food being served.

KeeP GuESTS In MInDYour party will be memorable with personal touches if you cater to your guests. Be mindful of dietary restrictions when planning your menu. It is not always possible to make an entire meal with restrictions, however having options to suit dietary needs makes guests feel special and welcomed. Know which beverages your guests like to drink and have them on hand for your party. Do not forget to have non-alcoholic and caffeine-free options.

The term R.S.V.P. comes from the French expression “répondez

s’il vous plaît,” meaning “please respond.” This response tells the

host whether or not the guests plan to attend the party and can

then determine quantities for food and beverages.

KNow youR ETIquETTEWhether you are the host or the guest, there are some basic party etiquette tips to keep in mind.

The host should always welcome each guest upon arrival by greeting them at the door. It is important to have a space for guests to put personal belongings. If you have a number of guests arriving at the same time, enlist a volunteer that can help show guests where to put their belongings. If a guest does not know other guests, make introductions immediately and share something the guests may have in common with each other; once the guests start talking you are able to politely excuse yourself to greet other guests.

Once your party is underway you should take time to be with each guest, but do not allow one guest to monopolize your time. At the end of the party, the host duties increase. Keep in mind that if you served alcohol, you take responsibility for the safety of your guests. If a guest has had too much to drink, a ride should be arranged for him/her.

As each guest leaves, a good host will help gather their personal belongings and thank them for attending.

ARRIVALSGuests should arrive right on time for a dinner party and no more than 30 minutes late for a cocktail party. never accept an invitation and then not show up just because you don’t feel like going out. If you need to cancel inform your host as soon as possible via telephone.

R.S.V.P.SWhether the invitation is verbal, mailed, or electronic, the party host often asks for the guest to R.S.V.P. If you know the host well and feel comfortable, call and offer to help the host with preparations or ask if there is anything you can bring, if appropriate. If the host does ask you to bring something it is important you follow through on the request.

TIPS

Centerpieces in seasonal color, decorative lighting or candles, and washing-machine-friendly napkins and tablecloths are great ways to add style to a party without much effort.

A relaxed and gracious hostess is the best hostess. Be ready, wear a conversation item, and remember to entertain! Relax about the logistics once the guests arrive.

eND OF THE EVEnInGWhen the evening ends, guests should not linger as the host will still have final cleanup to do. If a guest offers to help clean up, it is up to the host if he or she wants the extra help. If the host accepts the help, the guest should leave once the work is complete.

You may not have the budget to hire a professional party planner, but with good organization you can be your own party planner and have a memorable gathering that your friends will talk about for weeks to come.

The best hostess gift is something the host can use the next time he or

she throws a party. Serving dishes can be a great conversation piece.

On TABLE SETTInGTIPS

Dining at a formal dinner can be a little intimidating. Which fork do you use first? Is this the soup or dessert spoon? Should I know this?

Knowing the utensils used in a table setting can take the guessing out of the long-standing tradition. It will help you come across as more prim and proper when sitting down to a formal meal.

• Always use utensils from the outside in. So the fork on the outside will be the one to use with the first course. The same rule goes for glassware and cutlery.

• Forks are placed to the left of the dishes, knives to the right. If a soup spoon will be used, it will it will be to the right of the knives.

• The napkin should be placed on the far left of the place setting, unless a decorative napkin fold or ring is used. In that case, the napkin may be located wherever the party host or hostess chooses.

• When bread and butter will be served, a separate plate and butter knife may be placed to the upper left of the place setting.

• Plates are stacked at a place setting according to the order of serving. The plate for the main course will be at the bottom; salad plate/bowl, appetizer plate and soup bowl will be stacked in sequential order.

• Last but not least, glassware. Typically the water glass is the largest-rimmed glass located to the left of other glasses (placed in the upper right of the setting). White and red wine glasses will be located next to it.

For the whiskey fanWhiskey Rocks are ice cube substitutes. The seasoned whiskey drinker’s dilemma is this: sipping chilled whiskey is enjoyable, but ice isn’t a cooling solution. It melts. Whiskey rocks guarantee a chilled drink that doesn’t get watered down, even when consumed at a slow pace. In this case, Anthropologie’s Whiskey Rocks are not only practical but are also stylish, taking on a playful skewered marshmallow design.

White House | Black MarketWhen we first got together with Ashley Calhoon at White House | Black Market, she was sporting a new sequined blouse that just arrived at the store. “Whenever we can, we try on new merchandise to see how things feel and fit with different accessories,” said Calhoon who manages the stylish clothing boutique.

White House | Black Market associates are thoroughly trained in selecting the right styles for their different body types. “Our store appeals to every type of woman and that helps us in guiding customers to the styles they’re looking for. We offer classic silhouettes with trendy detailing that fit a variety of women, of all ages,” added Calhoon. “Plus we offer great accessories and footwear to complete a look.”

You can tell a store that is responsive to their customers by how they go above and beyond typical customer service. Especially when they get to know a client personally. “If someone is short on time, they can call ahead and we’ll pull outfits and accessories and have them ready for them to try on when they get here,” pointed out Calhoon. “This is especially helpful with our Workkit® line. The sheik line offers the busy professional pieces that are easy to mix-and-match.”

While trying on apparel in a fitting room, customers will also notice how focused the WH|BM team is in pulling together additional

pieces that would complement what the shopper is trying on. Customers are given additional options to consider based on their personal style, body type and shopping mission.

WH|BM staff are always available to give expert advice on creating looks that work. In addition to one-to-one consultations, the store offers special “girls night out” parties for groups. Women are invited to gather friends or co-workers and host shopping parties complete with a dedicated personal stylist. The entire group receives 10% off their purchases during their party.

“Our store appeals to every type of woman and

that helps us in guiding customers to the styles

they’re looking for.”– ashley Calhoon

They are also made aware of special promotions, coupons and given a special birthday offer.

When you walk into White House | Black Market, you are welcomed with a genuine greeting. You can tell the associates sincerely want to help you look your best. It’s a winning approach that will help you feel confident from day into evening – emphasizing their motto: “every place you go is more beautiful…simply because you’re there.”

Pink ChampagneMedia manager Les Glenna has used a personal shopper service for years. The Edina resident is busy juggling his children’s school and sports schedules and doesn’t have the time or energy to hit a large shopping mall. For purchasing assistance, Les relies on the services of Amy Briesemeister at Pink Champagne.

“My office is right in Pink Champagne’s backyard, so I can run over there during lunch and be in and out in under 15 minutes,” said Glenna. “Amy knows me and my family and orders pieces she knows we will love to wear.”

Former runway and print model Briesemeister runs the eclectic boutique Pink Champagne with the same charm and personalized style found in every item. So it is no surprise that she is willing to go above and beyond to help customers find the perfect attire or gifts.

As a personal shopper, Briesemeister takes the time to get to know her customers and is quick to offer advice and input in updating a wardrobe or finding a perfect gift item that fits your style and personality. “I want them to love what they buy or I won’t let them walk out the door,” said Briesemeister.

“As a small shop, our inventory is changing out regularly,” said Briesemeister. “Plus, because our store is small, customers appreciate the intimate atmosphere.”

Briesemeister works with shoppers in a variety of ways. Some bring in photos

of fashions they’ve seen online or in magazines to seek similar looks. Others rely on Briesemeister to stay on top of the hottest fashions. She’ll email customers photos of merchandise that she feels would fit their personality and style, then custom orders for them. And, of course, some find just their style in the store.

Special orders are common at Pink Champagne. “Once we’ve decided on a style that fits a customer, I can place special orders catered to them,” says Briesemeister.

It’s the “personal” nature of the personal shopper hat Briesemeister wears. It shows in how they feel with her selections. “My wife gets tons of complements from her friends over her outfits. She’s sure to point out that she got them from her husband,” said Glenna. “And Pink Champagne, of course.”

ingredients8-bone rack of lamb, Frenched (your butcher can do this)3 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary3 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme3 cloves garlic1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper1/4 cup olive oil2 cups Panko bread crumbs 1/4 cup beef stockDash red wine or sherry3 tablespoons unsalted butter

Directions

• Place the chopped rosemary, thyme and garlic in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal blade, and pulse to combine. Add the salt and pepper and pulse to combine.

• With the motor of the food processor running, slowly pour in the olive oil until the mixture forms a paste.

• Prepare the lamb: Season the lamb with salt and pepper and spray with olive oil spray. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

• Sear the rack on all sides in a preheated pan over high heat.

• Remove the rack of lamb from the pan and smear all surfaces of the lamb with the herb paste.

• Press the Panko bread crumbs into the herb paste coating the rack of lamb.

• Place the lamb on a rack in a roasting pan. Roast at 350°F for 15 minutes. Increase oven heat to Broil. Finish the lamb with 5 minutes under the broiler for medium-rare and just until the crust is brown. Do NOT allow the crust to burn. Watch carefully.

• Remove the rack of lamb to a cutting board and, using an instant-read thermometer, check the lamb for doneness.

Rare: 130-135°F Cool red centerMedium Rare: 135-140°F Warm red centerMedium: 140-145°F Warm pink center

NOTE: It is best not to cook lamb loin above medium doneness as it is such a lean cut and overcooking will render it tough and chewy.

Pan Sauce DirectionsWhen the lamb has reached the desired temperature, tent with foil and allow to rest at least 10 minutes before carving. Place the roasting pan on the stove over medium heat. Add the beef stock and the red wine or sherry, and heat, scraping up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Reduce slightly and whisk in unsalted butter.

Separate the lamb chops and place on individual plates. Spoon a tablespoon of pan sauce over each portion and serve immediately.

Makes 6

ingredients

1 recipe Shortening Crust (recipe follows)

1 can pitted tart cherries, drained (reserving 3 tablespoons of the liquid)

1 1/2 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca

1/8 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon almond extract

1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

1/8 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

2 drops of red food coloring (optional)

1 egg white

Directions

• Preheat oven to 425°F.

• Make filling: Drain cherries, reserving 3 tablespoons of their liquid in a large mixing bowl.

• Add tapioca, salt, almond extract, and lemon juice to the reserved cherry liquid, then add the drained cherries and the sugar.

• Gently stir together and allow to stand for 15 minutes.

• Roll out enough of the crust to form a 6-inch circle.

• Open the pocket pie crimper so that it forms a 45-degree angle and ease the rolled pie crust into mold. You need to keep the crimper at an angle so that when you close it, it won’t tear the dough.

• Add 2 tablespoons of the cherry filling into the crust and gently close the crimper shut to seal the dough. Do not overfill as they will not hold together during baking.

• Ease open the crimper. If the crust sticks a bit, gently insert a butter knife along the fluted edge and the crimper should open.

• Remove the pie from the crimper and place on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush crust with egg white. Repeat with remaining crust and filling.

• Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

living At west end

Opening in Spring 2013, the Flats at West End offer high-end, upscale rental homes for those who want to be in the center of it all. This is an unbeatable location near The Shops at West End and within a stone’s throw of downtown Minneapolis. The Flats at West End are perfect for those who want to live near downtown without the hustle of downtown or uptown living. Pick up groceries at Rainbow, take in a movie at the ShowPlace ICON Theatre, take the five-minute drive to downtown for a show, or ride your bike to the Chain of Lakes.

The idea for The Flats at the West End was sparked by Chris Culp, a principal of The Excelsior Group LLC. Culp lives in the area and saw an opportunity for upscale rentals.

The flats will have a modern and sleek vibe but also retain a classic feel, including top-of-the-line amenities such as an outdoor pool with lounge and fireplace, a 24-hour fitness club and yoga studio, a rooftop terrace, a climate-controlled parking garage, and a bocce ball court. The Flats at West End will be pet-friendly and smoke-free.

In preparation for the Spring 2013 opening, The Excelsior Group is currently meeting with people to reserve their flat as they’re being built. Potential residents are able to choose the view and layout of their flat. In November 2012, The Excelsior Group expects to open a model in the lower lobby of the ShowPlace ICON Theatre complex. Visitors will be able to experience the feel of The Flats at West End, including the kitchens which include a floating island for flexibility, and will be able to see and touch the materials first-hand.
