Home sweet home will be the song for the West Georgia Wolves on Thursday night, as head coach David Dean and his squad return to University Stadium for the first time since October 7. The Wolves are 1-1 in the last two weeks, falling in a nailbiter at West Alabama before winning big last week at Mississippi College. This week marks the second-straight GSC-TV Live Game of the Week in University Stadium, as the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 at approxi- mately 7:00. LAST WEEK West Georgia had win in just three quarters of play at Mississippi Col- lege, as the game was called due to lightning late in the third with the Wolves leading 28-0, move UWG to 6-2 on the year. Shorter fell last week at home to West Florida by a final of 42-29. THE COACHES West Georgia is coached by Gulf South Conference veteran David Dean, who is in his first season at the helm of the UWG program. This is his 10th season as a head coach, as he spent nine years at Valdosta State until the 2015 season. Dean is 6-2 at West Georgia and has a record of 85-29 overall as a head coach and is 4-0 against MC. Aaron Kelton is the head coach of Shorter, and is in his second year in Rome with a record of 0-19 at the helm of the Hawks program. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS The West Georgia Wolves are playing championship-caliber football this year, especially on the defensive side of the ball. UWG allowed just 93 yards against Mississippi College, including just 25 yards through the air. It was the lowest amount of yards allowed by the Wolves since Scott Symons became defensive coordinator in 2014. West Georgia is among the top-15 in the nation in four different defensive categories, including 8th in passing yards allowed per game. In that category, West Georgia is allowing just 145.8 yards per contest. Overall this season, the defense is allowing 285 yards per game, good for 17th nationally. ANOTHER 100-YARD PERFORMANCE For three straight weeks now, Devontae Jackson has gone over the coveted 100-yard mark in rushing, including 143 yards last week against Mississippi College. He now has two 100-yard games against Valdosta State and one against North Alabama, Mississippi College and Florida Tech. The number of carries is also of note, as he has had at least 20 carries in five of his six 100-yard games. The only exception was UNA in 2015, when he had 16 carries for 142 yards. Head Coach David DeanIn late January the University of West Georgia was faced with the task of filling a vacancy as head football coach. The job wasn’t vacant very long. David Dean was available; ready, willing, and eager to become UWG’s 11th head football coach of the modern era. Dean brings a resume to the UWG post that rivals almost any coach in the nation, at any level. Dean is this season entering his 30th season in the coaching pro-fession, his ninth at West Georgia. There is one common thread to his 29 previous seasons: David Dean is a winner. The former wide receiver at Georgia Tech was a key staff member at Valdosta State from 1988-1991. He next spent eight seasons on the staff at UWG, an era that saw the program experience a large number of firsts. That includes the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordina-tor, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason run to a second national title. How rare is a second national championship? Consider that college foot-ball has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s. During that time only three football coaches in the state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS title at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in States-boro with a pair of crowns of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II confer-ence, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous indi-vidual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 cam-paign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (20), Allison (18), and Natalie (12).

Wolves At A GlAnceWest Georgia comes into this week’s game after an unusual victory over Mis-sissippi College last Saturday. The Wolves scored 28 straight points over the first three quarters, but with 1:15 left in the third quarter, a lightning strike forced the teams from the field, and the game was eventually called as an official game. West Georgia features the top offense in the GSC and the No. 2 defense in terms of yards allowed. The UWG offense is second in scoring offense and leading in scoring defense among Gulf South Conference teams. Leading the way for the offense is ju-nior running back Devontae Jackson, who comes into the week averaging nearly 100 yards per game on the ground, and he is averaging 160 yards per game over the last three. Defensively, the Wolves are led by safety Montrell Pardue, who enters the game one tackle ahead (49) of linebacker Cam Magee.

HAWks At A GlAnceThe Shorter Hawks enter Week nine of the 2017 season looking to play spoiler for postseason hopes for the West Georgia Wolves. Shorter comes into the contest with an 0-8 record, led by a passing offense that has been tough to stop for opponents this season. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Pullum passed for a single-game record 386 yards last weekend against West Florida, and receiver Lewis Hayes was his main target, setting a new record for receiving yards in a game with 168 and also for touchdowns with three through the air. For Pullum in the remainder of the season, every pass completed pushes aother Shorter record further, as he broke the single-season passing record against North Alabama two weeks ago. On the year, Pullum has completed 126 passes for 1,518 yards and seven touchdowns. Hayes is the leading receiver for the Hawks this season with 39 receptions for 523 yards and four touchdowns.

West Alabama looks to rebound from their first con-ference loss of the year last week against West Florida in Livingston. The Tigers are second in the regional rankings and will host the Argos on Homecoming at Tiger Stadium. West Florida is coming off of a road victory at Shorter last week, where teh Argos won 42-29. Delta State was ranked fifth in the first regional rank-ings of the year, but the Statesmen are also coming off of a conference loss last weekend, falling at home to the Val-dosta State Blazers. This week will take the Statesmen to the road for two straight weeks, taking on North Alabama followed by a matchup with North Greenville. UNA was on the road in the Great Northwest, faling 20-17 to Central Washington last week. The Defensive endsWest Georgia has rotated between 8-10 difference players in the defensive front in the 2017 season, but the starting four have been the same every week. At end, sophomore Chad Price and freshman Deandre Gardenhire have taken the bulk of the snaps. Gardenhire was named GSC Freshman of the Week in the first week of the season and has 30 tackles this year with 4.5 for a loss and three sacks. Price is tops among UWG defensive linemen with 14 solo tackles and is fourth in the GSC in sacks with 5.5. His eight tackles for a loss have him tied for sixth in the league in that category. Alvonte Bell and Jay Johnson work in as well, and both have caused havoc. Bell has 10 tackles on the year with a tackle for a loss, while Johnson has 10 tackles, three for a loss and two sacks. Freshman Chris Lewis also has been working both at tackle and end, and has two sacks on the year.

The Defensive TacklesCordarro Stoute and Devlyn Cousin have been the starters throughout the season thus far in the middle, with Blake Jones and Ladarius Townsend providing backup. Cousin led the Wolves with five tackles against MC and had one half sack. Stoute has two tackles for a loss and 1.5 tackles for a loss on the year. Townsend is right behind those two with 16 tackles overall, includ-ing four tackles for a loss and two sacks on the season. Jones has 11 stops this year, including six solo stops for the cause.

Gardenhire almost thereRedshirt freshman defensive end Deandre Gardenhire has started the first three games of the season, winning GSC Freshman of the Week in Week 1, and having a

solid season thus far. He was instrumental in West Geor-gia building a 14-0 lead early in the game against North Alabama. The Camden County native had two sacks early in the game, and one of those also gave the freshman a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, setting up the Wolves’ second touchdown of the day.

Pardue vs. MageeTwo hard-hitting defenders are in a race to see who will lead the Wolves this season in tackles, as junior safety Montrell Pardue and junior linebacker Cam Magee have been trading the team lead in tackles for the past few weeks. Against North Alabama, Magee was named GSC Defensive Player of the Week with 10 tackles and an interception, but has had his share of success as well and is currently leading the Wolves in tackles with 49. His best night was 12 tackles at Delta State and he has 5.5 tackles for a loss on the year.

Patton Finds PaydirtThe turnovers hve been few and far between for the Wolves thus far on the year, as the Wolves have caused just nine turnovers thus far on the year. The most recent one ended up being the final play of the game at Mississippi College, as junior safety Rish-ad Goode came off the end on a blitz, blasting the MC quarterback and knocking the ball free. Another

junior safety, Ramon Patton, picked up the free ball and raced 34 yards for the score, providing the first defensive touchdown of the year for West Georgia. It was Patton’s second turnover of the year, as he had an interception against North Alabama as well earlier this season.

UWG Defense in the NCAAPlaying five straight teams that have been ranked at some point this season has taken it’s toll on the Wolves’ defense, and the Wolves are ranked among the top-50 nationally in five categories, led by scoring defense, where UWG is allowing 17.0 points per game, which is good for 17th in the nation. West Georgia is 21st in passing yards allowed at 163. yards per game, and 23rd in Team Passing Efficiency, allowing teams a passing efficiency rating of 103.47 on the year. The Wolves are outstanding in special teams as well, allowing just 17.54 yards per return, which is good for 19th in Division II volleyball.

Under 250Eight games into the 2017 season and the UWG de-fense has been fairly spectacular for much of the year. Including last Saturday’s performance, the Wolves have had four times this year where the defense has held the opponent to 250 or less yards. There have been 17 moments like that since defensive coordina-tor Scott Symons took over in 2014. But none were as dominant as the effort against Mississippi College, where the Wolves allowed just 93 yards. Diving deeper in to the stats shows that the Wolves allowed just three first downs in the contest and had four sacks. Mississippi College was 0-for-11 on third down conversions in the game.

Jackson on the MoveThe biggest story for the Wolves over the past three weeks has been the play of junior running back Devon-tae Jackson. The Marietta native has been a one-man wrecking crew with opposing defenses, rushing for 482 yards on 65 carries with five touchdowns. Those totals have moved him into second in the Gulf South Confer-ence in rushing yards, averaginig 97.6 yards per game. He has also moved into the top-20 nationally in All-Pur-pose yards, averaging now 162.88 All-Purpose yards per game. His top game so far this year was against West Alabama two weeks ago, when he had nearly 400 all-purpose yards, including 177 yards on his first two touches of the game.

Candler in the NCAASophomore quarterback Willie Candler is among the top-50 in the nation in nine different stat categories this year, and in three of those, he is among the top-20. His top category is passiing efficiency, where his rating of 158.7 is 15th in the nation. He is 17th nationally in Yards Per Pass Attempt with 8.8 and he is 15th in the nation in completion percentage at .658.

Wiggins Stays ConsistentWhile freshman kicker Trey Wiggins earned recognition as the GSC Freshman of the Week in the second week of the season, he has just recently begun to come into his own as a kicker, as he continues to kick from longer distance each week. Against North Alabama, the fresh-man from nearby Heard County nailed a 35-yard field goal, the longest of his career thus far. He is tied for 7th nationally in field goal percentage at .875 and is 7-for-8 on field goals this year. With extra points, he s 34-of-35 on the year. A Potent Return GameWest Georgia’s return game continues to move up in the national rankings, especially after Devontae Jack-son’s 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the West Alabama game two weeks ago. Jackson is aver-aging 26.6 yards per return on the year, good for 35th in

the nation, but the Wolves as a team average 26.37 yards per return, which is good for fifth in the nation. J.J. Jones is averaging 12.7 yards per return on punts as well, which is good for 17th in the nation.

Jackson All-Purpose WatchJunior running back Devontae Jackson has been an All-Gulf South Conference performer as an All-Purpose back in each of his first two seasons at UWG. Last week against Mississippi College, the Wheeler High graduate added another feather in his cap, as he reeled off 147 all-pur-pose yards. That was less than half of his total against West Alabama the week before, but it put him in rarified air, as he became the fourth player in school history with 4,000 all-purpose yards in his career. He comes into Week 9 with 4,044 career all-purpose yards, which puts him just over 1,000 yards away from the career record in that category. In addition, he is now 221 rushing yards away from becoming the third repeat 1,000-yard rusher in school history.

Leading ReceiversEighteen different receivers have come away with at least one catch during the first eight games of the year, with Shaq Roland leading the way with 30 receptions for 370 yards and three touchdowns. Emoni Williams is second on the team with 26 receptions for 322 yards on the year. Senior Deniko Carter is tied ith Roland in touchdown receptions with three on the season. Ten different players

have at least one touchdown reception this year.

Vaughan Watch 2017Senior offensive lineman Harley Vaughan stepped up to the top of the UWG record books against Valdosta State, as he started his 46th game his career at UWG. Vaughan was a redshirt freshman for West Georgia in the 2014 season and went to the semifinals twice, starting every game in-between. He passed former teammate Marcus Sayles against VSU with his 46th career start, and cur-rently has 48 career starts.

The David Dean era begins in 2016 after a solid run over the past three years. Just seven years ago, West Georgia went an entire season without a rushing touchdown, and in the past three years, the Wolves have produced a top-10 season in school history. In the 2016 season, the final game of the year gave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336 yards and five rushing touchdowns in that contest, the eighth time in school history that UWG had five or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. In the 2014 run to the NCAA Semifinals, the Wolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the first time in school history, shattering both the yards and touchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
