Dear West Hollywood Chamber Members, As we enter into the Fall season and holidays draw close, we realize even more the importance of community in our lives. West Hollywood’s businesses play an integral role in our social experience. The creativity and authenticity in services rendered by our businesses and professionals is stellar in the City we call home. Recently, I purchased and moved into my own condo in West Hollywood. The fact that I can walk out of my building, head over to the Sunset Strip, Santa Monica Boulevard, or Melrose Avenue, and visit the plethora of businesses that we have to offer and having no need to get into a car and travel outside of the city, is such an incredible village experience. Knowing our business owners, managers, employees, neighbors and friends, all within close proximity, adds to the overall quality of life we find here in West Hollywood. As many of you know, our Central & Eastside of the City has gone through some incredible changes and wonderful new business additions have re-energized the area. I want to congratulate the businesses and encourage you all to read the article in this publication to keep abreast of what’s new and what is yet to come. There are several exciting recent events to congratulate. Congratulations to Sunset Strip Music Festival, for once again putting on an incredible party! Congratulations to our famous Comedy Store and Rainbow Bar & Grill on your 40th Anniversaries! Congratulations to the wonderful Fashion’s Night Out! We hope to see you all on November 14th at our dynamic Creative City Awards: Honoring Innovation in Business hosted at The London Hotel West Hollywood, and see who will win the prize! It’s up to you, the Members, so remember to Vote online! Thank you,

The Chamber is on the move. We are catching the fall excitement and preparing for a vigorous fourth quarter highlighted in these pages of WORKS. On November 14 we will host our 29th annual Creative City Awards: Honoring Innovation in Business at The London West Hollywood. This is our most prestigious event where Chamber members vote for their favorites in various creative categories. A reception and silent auction with entertainment is followed by a fancy sit-down dinner and award presentations where we announce the winners. Get your tickets now as seating is limited and you don’t want to miss this one! Our Annual Meeting and Board Installation will be in January, so look for a Save the Date invitation in your email box soon. Members will hear what the Chamber has been up to, and what we have in store for 2013. We will be unveiling our shop local program – Eat. Shop. Play WeHo – which we hope will attract big crowds next year. Our Government Affairs Committee continues to advocate on your behalf, ensuring support for your issues by representing your business interests in government. The committee is working on advocacy programs that are proactive for small business and hopes to drive change with progress for you and your business. The Chamber is your advocate and we are there for you when you need us. Membership continues to grow and is active and engaged in the community. Committee participation is a great way to get involved and get your business connected to what is happening in West Hollywood. We appreciate each and every member, and we are grateful for the Board of Directors that leads with vision, encouraging us to take bold strides in order to meet the challenges businesses face in today’s marketplace. See you soon.

“One of the best things about the Chamber is getting to know others in the West Hollywood business community. As a business manager, my clients frequently inquire about who I know so I can refer them to local businesses and professional services. I can easily make those

connections to other Chamber members and better serve my high net worth clientele. In the age of social media, text messages and tweets, there is nothing better than making a personal introduction, and the Chamber is a fantastic resource.”

The City of West Hollywood has been working hard the past year to push West Hollywood to the forefront of multi-modal planning – offering an increasing array of options for residents and visitors to travel other than by automobile. Headed up by the Long Range & Mobility Planning Division, this new energy will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and allow everyone to breathe a little easier in the Creative City.

Zip CarEarlier this year, the City launched a two-year pilot program with car share giant, Zip Car, bringing six playfully named car models – tailored to West Hollywood’s exquisite tastes – to the city and available for rentals by the hour or the day. It’s like having your own car without the expensive hassle of storage and maintenance. Zip Car helps West Hollywood take cars off congested streets. Instead of members

owning their own car and contributing carbon emissions into the air and adding to West Hollywood’s traffic woes, one car is shared. This lowers your carbon footprint and helps do your part to protect our environment. Many visitors, hotel guests and residents have already joined and taken the new BMW or the Mini Cooper Convertible to meetings, the grocery store, a friend’s house, or even the beach! As the program grows in popularity, the City will explore expanding the program with more vehicles and more locations.

Bike ShareBicycle sharing is the future of urban transportation, and it’s coming to West Hollywood. Bicycle sharing is like ZipCar for bikes, where users select a bicycle from one of many bicycle docks spread throughout the city, then ride the bicycle and park it at another station at their destination. With bicycle sharing, we can use bikes for our short-distance trips without having to purchase or maintain our own bicycles, or worry about having them damaged or stolen. Memberships include unlimited thirty-minute rides from station to station, and are available in daily, weekly, monthly or annual rates, making the system ideal for residents, commuters and visitors alike.

On August 15, the West Hollywood Transportation Commission voted to recommend to City Council that West Hollywood prioritize bicycle sharing efforts, continue working with interagency groups for regional coordination, and request proposals for a near-term, privately-funded bicycle sharing pilot program. No one is more excited by this than SoCal Cycle Share Co-Presidents Owen Ward and Leor Ram. They have lived in, on and around West Hollywood for many years and are eager to bring bicycle sharing totheir neighborhood. For over a year they have been working with government officials, City staff, bicycle and environmental advocacy

groups, and residents and businesses to help bring bicycle sharing tothe forefront. SoCal Cycle Share’s mission is to work with communities to build the best bicycle sharing infrastructure; including connecting the system with businesses, determining the needs of residents and visitors, and selecting the ideal equipment that will best service all these requirements. There are many different bicycle sharing systems operating worldwide, and SoCal Cycle Share is working to bring B-Cycle, the current gold standard in bicycle sharing systems, to West Hollywood. The B-Cycle system is operating in 16 cities nationwide, including Denver, San Antonio, Honolulu, and Broward County in Florida. This technology provides a very simple user interface, elegant bicycles with a variety of basket options, and unique features such as on-board locks, allowing users to temporarily park their bicycle away from a station. In the face of delays with other systems in the US, B-Cycle’s technology consistently installs and operates effectively. Not all businesses agree however. Danny Roman, the founder of West Hollywood based Bikes and Hikes LA. appeared at the West Hollywood transportation sub-committee meeting to voice concerns about a proposed bike share pilot program and how it will be detrimental to his two-year biking business. Roman agrees that bike sharing programs are beneficial for both the environment and for promoting overall physical fitness, provided they’re done strategically. “West Hollywood always wants to be first, but in the case of bike share, it’s essential that we follow the lead of bigger programs being launched in cities around us like LA and Santa Monica--He adds, “We have a creative bike share solution--a win/win for local merchants and our neighbors alike--and encourage the city to request some additional proposals for this program. We’d like our fair shot.”

Over ninety percent of car trips are within one mile of home, making it very easy to replace most of these trips with bicycle sharing. Residents can ride to the store for grocery runs, using the basket to bring back their purchases. Tourists can use the bicycles to get around town without renting or parking a car. The nightlife crowd has expanded parking options, being able to park in one area of town and bike to their destination. The uses are endless, and systems worldwide are discovering more. London made a splash as a world-class city not only with theOlympics, but with regular coverage of its “Boris Bikes,” named for the mayor who brought them to the city. West Hollywood is soon to join those ranks.

Bike WeHoBicycling continues to grow in popularity as more and more people are riding to work, school, or taking a trip to their favorite local business. To help meet this increasing demand, the City has launched Bike Weho, to improve the bicycling experience throughout the City, and educate residents on bike related projects. In only the past few months, new bike lanes have been installed on San Vicente Blvd., Share the Road signage installed on Santa Monica Blvd., and over 60 bicycle racks have been installed along Santa Monica Blvd. to help bring cyclists to the front door of local businesses. As part of the Bike WeHo campaign, the City is excited to announce the launch of a bicycle rack request program. As part of the program, residents, customers and business owners may request the installation of a bicycle rack in front of their favorite local business. More info on bicycling in West Hollywood as well as information to request a bicycle rack can be found at www.weho.org/bikeweho. Electric VehiclesWest Hollywood and its residents have always enjoyed being on the leading edge. In that spirit, West Hollywood is projected to account for 18%-22% of the electric vehicle market share in the Los Angeles area in the next 10 years, making it one of the highest markets in the greater Los Angeles area. To meet the future needs of electric vehicle owners, the City has partnered with ECOtality, Inc., one of the nation’s largest providers and manufacturers of electric vehicle charging stations.

As part of a US Department of Energy and state grant program, ECOtality will replace the City’s outdated charging stations with new smart chargers, as well as install new stations in five city owned parking facilities. These new stations will help provide convenient charging options for electric vehicle owners throughout the city and the Westside. As demand increases, the City will explore the options of installing “fast chargers” as well. These charging stations are capable of completing a full charge of an electric vehicle in less than 30 minutes.

Representing Business Interest in Government

Santa Monica Boulevard Business Owners in Final Stages of BID Formation A coalition of business owners on Santa Monica Boulevard have been actively working to establish a Santa Monica Boulevard Business Improvement District (BID) and launched a Petition Drive earlier this year. Previously established West Hollywood “district” BIDs include The Avenues: Art, Fashion & Design and The Sunset Strip Business Association. These business districts have shown tremendous success and business owners are estatic with the results for their individual businesses in increased traffic, revenue and brand exposure. After several years of planning, developing the assessment structure and budget allocations, the Santa Monica Boulevard businesses are thrilled to be in the final stages of the process of formulation, gaining momentum to garner 50% of business interested in making the BID a reality.

Managed by the business owners in the district, the BID will work to create brand identify for this section of WeHo, establish various programs and create events and promotions to increase the commercial activity in the Santa Monica Boulevard area. The budget created from the total assessments will provide services for marketing, streetscape improvements, security enhancements, maintenance programs, special events, administration and operations to benefit businesses within the district.

“The Santa Monica BID is an excit-ing opportunity for business owners to work together on the development of programs and projects designed

specifically for the benefit of Santa Monica Boulevard.”

Recently approved, and now in the process of construction documentation, ingenuity, sheer genius design and a mix of residential uses are just a few of the attributes of this beautifully designed project. This “Cinderella” story is the creation of a team of West Hollywood Chamber Members including Developer Pacific Development Partners, Land Use Attor-neys Truman & Elliott, LLP, Afriat Consulting Group, Walgreens and world-renowned architect Lorcan O Herlihy. The SMB20 mixed-use project at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Crescent Heights Boulevard will take a blighted mid-City site and create an architectural gem. The project’s unusual and innovative features include, “green” building design features that reinvent the word “park” and landscaping and open space are focal points of the project.

Taking Center Stage—SMB20/ Walgreens-Mixed-Use Project is coming to WeHo!

The 13,000 square feet of Walgreens will feature luxury amenities, fresh food, a make-up counter, as well as specialized healthcare products and services available for seniors and the LGBT communities. In addition, the project will offer “flex car” and “flex bike” stations. There’s even a station for dog walkers if you are hoofingit around WeHo with your pooch.

The project includes 20 apartment units, four of which are dedicated to affordable and low income housing. The site will also accommodate 2,138 square feet of unique specialty retail space, and the City’s first “Sky Parke” juxtaposed to Matthew Sheppard Memorial Park. Construction for the project is slated to commence in 2013.

Monarch project on Fountain and La Brea

“Eastside West Hollywood is up and coming. It’s in the heart of LA, young and hip with so much going on, and it’s smack in the middle of Beverly Hills, Hollywood and downtown!” extols Dana Nahoray, owner of Ava Sophia, a jewelry business newly located inside French Market Place. Donna Eshelman, specializing in coaching for improved physical movement, confirms centrality was the reason she chose to relocate from Culver City. “And the area is extra accessible owing to Santa Monica Boulevard being a thoroughfare,” she notes, “so people are inclined to use public transport.” Anthony Carro, owner of Candle Delirium, who opened his business 9 years ago says, “When I moved into that space it was off the beaten track, but I felt what was going to happen. Rents were less expensive than the Westside, and the City was trying to put in revitalization efforts. I knew this would eventually be the place to be. It was a no brainer.”

Central/Eastside Attracts Hip and Trendy

Indeed, the former Redevelopment Agency revitalized the Eastside Project Area with award-winning projects such as West Hollywood Gateway (anchored by Target and Best Buy), West Hollywood Community Corporate Housing’s Sierra Bonita affordable housing project and others. With the success of those projects, the City experienced first-hand the power and importance of redevelopment and believes it is a vital economic stimulant, as well as provider of funding for affordable housing. And although the Eastside Project Advisory was dissolved due to termination of the redevelopment agencies, and Eastside remains a mix of old and new, there is clear evidence of transformation underway on Santa Monica Boulevard between Crescent Heights Boulevard andLa Brea by a handful of bold business owners who perceive potential. Notable are Food + Lab, a small café owned by mother and son team, Esther & Nino Linsmayer, who offer outstanding

home-made Austro-Cali cuisine and catering, and Candle Delirium, an exquisite, creative space which carries full product lines of exclusive candles in a natural rustic setting of wood and high ceilings. Five years old, Voda Spa, a stunning 15,000 square foot renovation, presents ultramodern spa facilities blended with Russian tradition and an indoor waterfall to greet visitors who enjoy amenities from a Siberian Wild Berry Scrub to the popular Russian Bear massage. Salt’s Cure is a busy two year old eatery, using California ingredients. Refreshing simplicity is evident in the menu and the art consisting of panels of impressions made in salt which adorn white walls, giving the feel of a clean butcher shop. Laurel Hardware has reincarnated into a popular avant-garde restaurant and bar where a reservation is a must. With a poetic American menu, the cozy front cafe opens to the street with tall paned glass, greenery climbs indoor walls, and a massive bar leads to an outdoor patio dottedwith olive trees. The Hudson, an innovative remodel dubbed a new watering hole, isgracefully poised above the trees with a classy decor of distressed metal and exposed light bulbs, and owner, Mike Jay, is already renovating a second project two blocks east – Voyeur. Mike says,“My clientele is the community.” These are business owners cognizant of more than their own bottom line; aware of the importance of smooth integration with the neighborhood. corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, and another at Fountain and La Brea. These will feature residential units, ground floor retail and subterranean parking, creating “contemporary ‘green’ urban villages” for luxurious living in Central/Eastside. And all these efforts will be reinforced by the recent City recommendation for theestablishment of an Eastside Task Force to “actively engage Eastside Constituents and encourage community participation with regards to Quality of Life, Public Safety, and Community Involvement issues that face the Eastside.”

Challenges still exist, of course. But already a positive domino effect is occurring. One glaring example is the immediate increase in foot traffic and sales for surrounding businessesafter the long vacant Laurel Hardware was taken over by new owners. USA Printing owner, Hooman Shirian, doing business in the central/eastside area for 20 years, comments, “businesses including mine are upgrading, buying new equipment and keeping up with technology.”

Center City Improvement Group “to find out what residents want and get that done.” The group meets every first Saturday of every month to discuss issues such as lights for crosswalks, vacant businesses, protocol for city events, security and shared parking areas to fully utilize available parking. As well, Monarch Group, a California firm, is constructing two mixed-use, urban infill development sites, one at the northeast

One owner’s conclusion is,“You’ve gotta have a vision and a little umph to go into an area that is still untapped.” But as Tony Tyre, Attorney at Law, two and a half years at his Eastside location, sees it, “East is the only direction left in which the city can expand. It’s only a matter of time.”

The dream child of the owners and operators of the landmark venues along The Sunset Strip—The Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF) was born in 2008, through the cooperation and partnership of The Sunset Strip Business Association (SSBA), as well as, The City of West Hollywood. With the goal of “promoting, celebrating, and perpetuating the legendary Sunset Strip music experience,” the yearly three day festival did much more than that—providing a much appreciated economic boost to the businesses along The Strip, and to The City of West Hollywood at large.

Starting in 2009, the scope of SSMF grew to include a daylong street closure between San Vicente Blvd. and Doheny Dr. It was this pivotal growth year that truly made the festival an international destination for thousands of music lovers across the globe. Bringing in upwards of 10,000 visitors, the new summertime institution filled the dozen plus West Hollywood hotels to capacity, and brought in unprecedented sales numbers and profits to the restaurants, bars and retail stores—especially those in and around the bounds of the Festival area. “We were completely unprepared!” says Joe Shaktah, the owner and manager of Sunset Deli. “The first year… and even the second year we ran out of bread, and ended up having to buy loaves from one of the food trucks. People were even ordering sandwiches without bread, just the meat and the cheese!” The family owned and operated deli, went from turning out 100-150 sandwiches per day, to assembly lining 1,000 plus sandwiches the day of the street fest. Each year they now bring in all the help they can get—hiring any available friends and extended family to meet the demand, of this, their most profitable day of the year. This same story of high volume and high profits holds true for Sunset Strip staple Panini, who have seen their sales increase drastically with each subsequent SSMF. Owner since 2006, Anita Mohanessian says that Panini’s business increases at least 200% the day of the Festival, with the restaurant so full, that customers take to enjoying their meals sitting on the sidewalk.

The Sunset Strip, Colossal Destination of Rock Heritage By Brent X. Mendoza

The Sunset Strip Music Festival Brings West Hollywood Business Owners Their Most Profitable Day of the Year

Just a block away, and new to The Strip, Rock and Reilly’s Irish Pub officially opened in November of 2011; but made the decision to open its doors early (unfinished interior aside), for one day only—in August of last year—to serve the SSMF masses and provide a sneak preview of their new thematic gastropub. Director of Operations Jeremy Findel has been thoroughly impressed thus far with the festival’s attendance and well-planned organization by the city and the SSBA, “It’s been a great marketing tool for us, bringing in patrons that wouldn’t normally come to visit… it also comes at a good time of the year when there’s sort of a lull between sports seasons, bringing in a nice boost with all the tourism.” Providing much needed accommodations for this mass influx of what’s now exceeding 15,000 plus tourists—super swank boutique hotels, The Andaz, The Mondrian, and The Standard all report to be at max occupancy during the festival, being booked up months in advance, as travelers secure lodgings that are walking distance from all the festivities. In addition, all three posh locales hosted exclusive SSMF VIP events this year, bringing in celebrity clientele for cocktail parties and press generating, red carpet soirées. Heading into year five of the festival, the businesses lining the fabled Sunset Strip have become more and more inventive and savvy, capitalizing on the myriad of opportunities and special event permits granted by The City of West Hollywood during SSMF. From extended business hours, to makeshift outdoor bars and kitchens,

the businesses were prepared this year for the onslaught of festival goers looking to fill up, or wind down while partying the day away, with their favorite bands. Taking full advantages of all the profit maximizing opportunities that SSMF affords, this year’s most notable outdoor “expansion” had the legendary Rainbow Bar and Grill bringing in a tap beer truck, and setting up satellite bars and pizza slice stations in their adjacent parking lot. As owner Mikeal Magliari stated, “Last year we probably had 1,000-1,500 people through here, and it was so crowded that food service became nearly impossible… But ya’ know these are all good problems to have. It would be great if every weekend we had to worry about running out of cups!”

This year marks the 40th anniversary of two Sunset Strip landmarks—The Comedy Store and the Rainbow Bar & Grill—both of which attract fans and fame seekers from around the world. As evidenced by the dozens of daily tour buses that pass by each day, the legendary locales have become known as modern-day entertainment Mecca’s, after debuting many of music and comedy’s most prestigious legends. Opened on April 7, 1972 by Sammy and Mitzi Shore, The Comedy Store can be credited with launching the careers of such notables as Roseanne Barr, Jim Carrey, Andy Kaufman, Sam Kinnison, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Richard Pryor and Robin Williams. These household names have literally left their mark on the walls of The Store, whose exterior is covered with their signatures, as well as dozens of other “graduates,” who all owe a debt to “the house that Mitzi built,” for taking a chance on them early on in their respective careers. Many of these comedic corner stones were on hand at a celebration event earlier this year, to pay homage to “the matriarch of stand-up” Mitzi Shore, as The Comedy Store celebrated four decades of ground-breaking laughter. Along with the dozens of comics and well wishers in attendance, West Hollywood Mayor Jeff Prang was on hand to pay tribute, honoring Mitzi Shore—the first woman in West Hollywood to own both a business and the building—with a special recognition award declaring The Comedy Store an iconic landmark.

THE COMEDY STORE AND THE RAINBOW BAR & GRILL CELEBRATE 40 YEARS AS CORNERSTONES OF THE SUNSET STRIPBy: Brent X. Mendoza

With a history equally as impressive, The Rainbow Bar & Grill opened its fabled doors on April 16, 1972. Still to this day, family owned and operated, the Italian eatery was founded by Mario Maglieri and Lou Adler, and has served as the regular stomping grounds for rock royalty such as Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Elvis Presley and Van Halen. John Belushi notoriously spent some of his final hours carousing at The Rainbow, GN’R shot a portion of their groundbreaking “November Rain” video in the restaurant’s interior, and more recently in 2010, Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead) used “The Bow” as a backdrop for much of his revealing autobiographical documentary. Not to be outdone by The Comedy Store, The Rainbow threw their own 40th anniversary celebration earlier this year with a raging parking lot party (complete with an outdoor stage) that included performances by Rainbow regulars Don Dokken, Pretty Boy Floyd and Hurricane, amongst others. With over 2,000 plus in attendance, the event proved that The Sunset Strip mainstay is, in the words of current owner/operator Mikeal Maglieri, “still the center of rock n’ roll.” Not to be outdone by The Comedy Store, The Rainbow threw their own 40th anniversary celebration earlier this year with a raging parking lot party (complete with an outdoor stage) that included performances by Rainbow regulars Don Dokken, Pretty Boy Floyd and Hurricane, amongst others. This year’s State of The City, in partnership with the City of West Hollywood and sponsored by Wells Fargo, focused on Creative Economics - Art & Business Partnerships. The event, held at Plummer Park’s Fiesta Hall, was sit-down lunch served buffet-style hosted by WEHO Bistro, with décor and table settings by Events by Fabulous, creating a wonderfully festive atmosphere. Guest were treated to a performance by the Bancroft Middle School Rock Band and the center pieces of brushes and pallets of paints atop paper table cloths allowed guest to express their own creativity for this arts and businesses themed event. Support for the arts fosters a culturally rich and diverse region, contributes to a strong quality of life, and drives economic development by supporting tourism and commerce. With this in mind, the City of West Hollywood revealed the findings of a two-year study done in partnership with Americans for the Arts on the economic impact of the arts to our local economy presented by Mayor, Jeffrey Prang and Economic Development & Special Projects Manager, Jeff Huffer. Chamber Chair, Hany Haddad, welcomes the crowd and introduces Lana Bykova, Wells Fargo District Manager. The Truth about SuccessSuccess is a process - nothing more, nothing less. For those of you who are serious about having more, doing more, giving more, and being more - success is achievable with some understanding of what to do, some discipline around planning and execution of those plans, and belief that you can achieve your desires.

There are basically six key areas to higher achievement – 1. Making the decision 2. Clarity - developing the vision 3. Focus - having a plan 4. Commitment - understanding the price and being willing to pay that price 5. Belief - believing in yourself and those around you 6. Taking Action – practice

1. Making the DecisionWe all know that nothing moves until someone makes a decision. The first action is always in making the decision to proceed. Commit your decision to paper, to bring it into focus. Then, go for it!

2. ClarityHaving clarity of purpose and a clear picture of what you desire is probably the single most important factor in achievement. Understand what you want, why you want it, and what it will do for you. This is a critical factor, and as such, is probably the most difficult step.

Once you have a clear understanding of what you want, it is critical that you engage in goal setting - specifically setting SMART goals. S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Sensitive – S-M-A-R-T. Knowing what you want and setting SMART goals as mileposts on your quest cannot help but give you clarity!

3. FocusFocus is having the unwavering attention to complete what you set out to do. There are a million distractions in every facet of our lives. Everyone wants a piece of us and the result can be totally overwhelming. So, how can we stay on course with all the distractions in our lives? The best way is to develop and follow a plan.

4. CommitmentCommitment is something that comes from understanding that everything has its price, and then having the willingness to pay that price. This is important because nobody wants to put significant effort into something, only to find out after the fact that the price was too high. The price is something not necessarily defined as financial. It could be time, effort, sacrifice, money, or perhaps something else. The point is that we must be fully aware of the price and be willing to pay it, if we want to have success.

5. BeliefThis is perhaps the single biggest obstacle that all of us must overcome in order to be successful. The majority of people carry with them an entire series of self-limiting beliefs that will absolutely stop, and hold them back from, success. The old expression is absolutely true - whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right! The bottom line is that we must shed the bad and replace with good beliefs.

6. Taking ActionNothing changes until something moves. This is the battle cry of author and journalist Robert Ringer. And he is absolutely correct. Not all of the decision-making, clarity, planning, focus, and belief in the world will get you to where you want to be without taking action! Action - putting your plans into play is what will get you to the destination. Execution is the single biggest factor in achievement, so the faster and better your execution, the quicker you will get to the goals!

So, there you have it; the six steps that will help you to achievement and success! Figure out what you want, put a plan together to achieve it, understand the cost, believe in yourself - then go and get it!

West Hollywood City HallWants You to Know About a New Recycling Law

As of July 1st, 2012, new state law Assembly Bill 341 (AB 341) mandates Commercial Recycling for all businesses who generate 4-cubic yards or more of solid waste (“trash”) per week, as well as all multi-unit residential properties of 5-units or more.

The City of West Hollywood’s existing contract with our exclusively franchised waste hauler, Athens Services, already contains the service levels necessary for affected properties to comply with the new law.

The City has provided “100% Commercial MRFing” for businesses, since 2008. What does this mean? It means that 100% of all solid waste collected from all businesses within West Hollywood is sent to a recycling/sorting facility, called a “MRF” (Materials Recovery Facility) first - where as many items are extracted & recycled as possible, as opposed to all simply being landfilled. In addition, FREE recycling containers & pick-ups have been available to all West Hollywood businesses, since 2004.

As for multi-unit residential properties of 5-units or more within the City of West Hollywood, Athens Services is required to provide unlimited recycling containers & services at no cost tothe customer.

The City’s website (www.weho.org) contains much information regarding trash collection, recycling options, bulky item pick-ups, etc. Athens Services mailed a one-page informational flyer with their bills in June 2012, explaining AB 341 and its requirements.

What does all of this mean? It means that we are already in compliance with the State of California’s new mandate! If you would like more information about this new law, feel free to visit the State’s “CalRecycle” website at www.calrecycle.ca.gov .

To request additional recycling containers and/or service, please contact Athens Services directly at (888)336-6100.

Have any other recycling questions or need ideas on how you can do more? Please visit the City’s website or contact the City’s Office of Environmental Services at (323) 848-6404. In true WeHo City fashion...we will be more than happy to help!
