Bronze medal for local skierBlack Jack skier Julien Locke captured a

bronze medal the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships Jan. 4 in Houghton, Michigan.

The 22-year-old Nelson native took third in the Men’s Open 1.5-kilometre freestyle sprint, and was first among U23 skiers with a time of three minutes, 18.38 seconds.

“It was a good race, I skied well, and had good skis, and finished out pretty well,” Locke told the Trail Times from Houghton.

Locke attended the event to prepare for this week’s Canadian World Junior/ U23 Trials in Thunder Bay, Ont., and going against the best skiers in the United States seemed like a good warm up.

“I didn’t have the greatest start to the season in December,” said Locke. “We had issues with skis and my form wasn’t super good, so it was definitely nice to come here and have a good result.”

The veteran Black Jack skier finished just behind Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess who skied neck and neck with Reese Hanneman from the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Centre.

“I started moving up through the climbs, and then there’s some twisty sections, and just carried my speed well, and put in a good burst right at the beginning of the finishing straight, then moved up into third and just kind of held that position.”

Hanneman pulled away from Blackhorse-von Jess in the final metres to finish in a time of 3:15.14 to win gold.

Following the U.S. Championship, the Haywood Nor-Am World Junior-U23 Trials

go in Thunder Bay at the Lappe Nordic Ski Centre from Jan. 14-19.

“We have a skate sprint down there on Thursday, then a 15 km classic, and a 30 km pursuit, but the sprint is my strength so I’ll be playing my cards in the sprint.”

Last year, Black Jack skier Colin Ferrie advanced to the FIS World Junior and U23 championships in Turkey, and Locke would like nothing more than to take his turn this year, and qualify for the U23 Worlds in Romania, Feb. 23-28.

Adventure Hotel gets New York Times nod

The New York Times’ Christopher Solomon has written a second article praising Nelson, following a feature spread in 2014, and this time he’s given a shout-out to the Adventure Hotel.

In the article, which was published on Dec. 28 and called “In British Columbia, a Stylish Hotel for Adventure Seekers,” the hotel is described as a “hipper lodging option that’s much more Euro-style.”

It also takes time to mention some of the local characters.

“It’s not unheard-of to see a woman walking with-out pants or a guy playing a didgeridoo made from PVC pipe. And that pants-less free spirit? She rips the powder way better than you do,” Solomon writes.

The Adventure Hotel’s owner Danny Rickaby said the attention is a welcome shot in the arm.

“I’m proud of what we’ve done here and I appreciate the fact that people from bigger places are coming to this small town. To be recognized by The New York Times is just amazing.”

Rickaby said Solomon understands the non-fran-chise ethos of the building and the adventurous spirit that inspired its renovation. (Formerly, the Adventure Hotel was the New Grand.)

“This really was an adventure for us,” said Rickaby. “We had our own style, and our own concept that fits the facility. Most chains will restrict certain things, they want you to do everything according to their plan. That’s not what it’s like here.”

Dianna Ducs of Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism took the article as a sign that Nelson’s visibility is continuing to rise.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to be on almost the same playing field as some of the new hotels being built. We have funky, state-of-the-art, hostel-like ac-commodations right here in Nelson,” she said.

She said the spirit of Nelson is exemplified by the number of independent businesses, as well as the Capitol and Civic Theatres. That’s something she believes Solomon captured with his articles.

“We don’t have box stores or franchises or cookie-cutter buildings,” she said. “Here in Nelson we don’t fit into a box.”

One hundred twenty-eighth in an alpha-betical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names

Nakusp is among the few surviving local place names derived from a Sinixt First Nation word, and in a fairly unadulterated form no less, but there’s some doubt about its meaning.

It was first mentioned in 1889 by George Dawson in his Report on a Portion of the West Kootanie [sic] District, British Columbia: “Another stream of comparatively small size, flowing in one mile and a half south of the last, is known as the Na-kusp. It comes from a low and rather wide valley which is reported to be used by the Indians as a pass to Slocan Lake.”

It next shows up in the Nelson Miner of Dec. 12, 1891: “[T]he railway will be ex-tended along the east shore of Upper Arrow lake to the mouth of Na-kusp creek …”

The present spelling first appears in the Miner on Jan. 9, 1892: “[T]here is great ri-valry between the parties interested in the Kaslo creek and Slocan river routes, to say nothing of the route the people of Revelstoke will open by way of Nakusp creek.”

Capt. James W. Troup was quoted in the Spokane Review of Feb. 9 as stating: “[T]he new town which the Canadian Pacific are laying out at the mouth of Na Kusp creek … will probably be called Kootenai City, though it may be called Slocan …”

On May 21, the Miner asked: “Should the name of the new town be Nakusp or Napusk? Those who have located there claim the lat-ter is correct.” On June 18, the paper added: “[T]he small controversy about the name of the creek is settled. The Colville Indians say that Na Kusp (pronounced Na Koosp)

means long point, whereas Napusk means nothing.”

The Nakusp post office opened on Aug. 1, 1892. The townsite was laid out by A.E. Hodgins and Frank Fletcher and deposited with the land registry on Jan. 28, 1893.

In the Arrow Lakes News of Oct. 14, 1927, T.J. Barron wrote of the name’s origin: “About three years ago, I interviewed Chief Louis. He stated definitely that the name ‘N’oosp’ had been given to the spot at the mouth of Nakusp Creek. He said that the word means a place where the water forms an eddy or whirl, and suiting his gestures to the explanation, he made a whirling motion with his hand.

“He stated further that the Indians had given the name to that particular spot only, and that the whites had extended it to the town and neighborhood. He also said that ‘Nakusp’ was not the correct form of the word; that the white men had inserted the ‘k’ because they could not pronounce the Indian word. I asked him to pronounce it for me, which he did several times — ‘N’oosp’ — dwelling on the ‘n’ and sounding the ‘oo’ like ‘oo’ in the word good.”

In Pioneer Days of Nakusp and Arrow Lakes (1952), Kate Johnson quoted Frederick W. Jordan, who “oft told the story of asking Chief Indian Louie how Nakusp got its name. Chief Louie was holding a Big Chum tobacco bag in his hands at the time and this is the answer he gave: ‘Indians come down lake in canoes, storm very bad, canoes nearly lost at Kuskanax Creek, but on entering big bay at the point (at this point Chief Louie pulled the string of the tobacco bag tight), Neqo’sp — “safe.”’”

However, in the Nelson Daily News of April 16, 1947, Lance Whittaker said: “Among the things I have learned from [ethnographer

James Teit’s Smithsonian Institute report] are the Salish names for present Kootenay towns … Mr. Teit gives the English meaning of Neqosp (Nakusp) as ‘having buffalo’ although there is no tradition of buffalo ever occur-ring there. The late Captain Walter Wright, of the steamer Minto, told me a couple of years ago that contemporary Arrow Lakes Indians gave it a very different (and unprint-able) meaning.”

Indeed, according to some Sinixt today, the unprintable meaning — a part of human anatomy — is correct. But if so, what did their ancestors have against such a lovely spot?

In Lakes Indian Ethnography and History (1985), Randy Bouchard and Dorothy Kennedy wrote: “Nakusp [is] the angli-cized pronunciation of nkwsp. Numerous ‘translations’ of the term nkwsp have been published in local newspapers and histori-cal documents and are still believed to be correct by local residents today. The transla-tion given by Teit, ‘having buffalo,’ would be correct if in fact this place name was nkwisp. But it is not.”

One of their informants, Mary Marchand, insisted nkwusp is a “real Lakes word” and refers to the fact that “something in the lake comes together.”

“In our opinion, what she meant was that before the level of Upper Arrow Lake was raised by dams, it was here at Nakusp that the lake ‘came together,’ that is, began to narrow down again to a river.”

While Chief Louie’s use of the tobacco bag was assumed to signify “a safe place, a quiet shelter, secret site, a quiet bay, or words to that effect” (as recorded in the Arrow Lakes News of Jan. 31, 1930), according to Marchand, he was actually demonstrating how the lake “came together.”

Selkirk College builds momentum for 50th anniversary celebration

With the arrival of 2016, Selkirk College is preparing for a year-long golden anniversary celebration that will dive into the past, em-brace the present and look towards the future.

Fifty years ago, a new chapter in learning began for the West Kootenay-Boundary. With en-thusiastic support from residents across the region who desired ac-cess to post-secondary education

close to home, Selkirk College opened its doors in September, 1966.

Five decades later, British Columbia’s first regional rural college continues its mission to inspire lifelong learning, transform lives through education and train-ing, and serve the communities who backed it from the start.

“It’s been an incredible journey to this point,” says Selkirk College

President Angus Graeme. “When you think about all the lives and families that have been impacted over the last 50 years because com-munity leaders and forward think-ers in the early 1960s had the vision to make Selkirk College a reality. We are humbled every day to be able to continue this important work for the people of our region and looking forward to celebrat-ing this anniversary with all of the

Members of the Selkirk College 50th Anniversary committee stand in front of the Castlegar Campus with a new logo that recognizes five decades of post-secondary education in the West Kootenay-Boundary. The logo and tagline “Journeys Taken, Futures Waiting” will be used to promote the various events and projects that will be taking place in the region over the next 16 months.

West Kootenay Advertiser Thursday, January 14, 2016 A9

A division of

communities we serve.”The push to establish a regional college in the West

Kootenay-Boundary began in 1962 and was rewarded in February, 1965 when 72 per cent of electors in the region voted in favour of establishing a college in a referendum. At the time of the referendum, the re-gional college incorporated six districts that included Trail, Nelson, Castlegar, Slocan, Grand Forks and Arrow Lakes.

Selkirk College opened its doors in September, 1966 with 458 charter students taking classes in the old bunkhouses at the Celgar Pulp Mill as construction of the Castlegar Campus concluded that first fall. The campus was completed and officially welcomed students in January, 1967.

“Selkirk College has a rich history and that will be an important part of our 50th celebrations,” says Graeme, who began teaching at the college in 1992 and now serves as Selkirk’s eighth president. “But what we have planned goes beyond simply marking a date on the calendar, it’s a time to celebrate what we are today and what we will continue to be into the future.”

The Selkirk College 50th Anniversary Committee has been working for several months on plans that will build excitement for the historical milestone. Starting with the kick-off at the annual Bursary Tea on January 30 at Mary Hall on the Tenth Street Campus in Nelson, there will be several events and projects that take shape over the next 16 months.

The main event is the Homecoming Weekend Celebration set for September 16 to 18 which will bring together current staff and students with alumni, retirees and community supporters. In April, 2017 the Class of 2017 will be recognized as the 50th Selkirk College grad class to march across the stage and into their futures.

Stories from the last 50 years will be told over the course of the next 16 months, culminating with a commemorative coffee table book that traces the highlights of the last five decades. Funds will also be raised throughout the year to establish a $50,000 scholarship/bursary which will provide a legacy of financial support for future students.

“This is an exciting time to reinforce to our com-munities the importance of post-secondary education close to home,” says Maggie Keczan, Selkirk College’s Marketing Manager. “The Homecoming Weekend Celebration is the big event, but there will be plenty more opportunities in the next 16 months for com-munity members to get involved in helping mark and celebrate this important occasion.”

Rossland doctor cycles Africa to help Kenyan childrenA retired Rossland

doctor is cycling across Africa to raise money for kids in Kenya to continue their education.

Dr. Brenda Trenholme has lived and worked in Rossland for 32 years and is taking on the Tour d’Afrique — a 90-day ride

covering 12,076 km from Cairo, Egypt to Cape Town, South Africa — to raise money for the Kenya Education Endowment

Fund (KEEF).KEEF is a Vancouver-

based charity “that sup-ports very poor but academically gifted high school students in Kenya,” as secondary ed-ucation there is not free.

Trenholme and her family have a longstand-ing affiliation with the charity and her sister is currently in Kenya in-

terviewing students for the coming school year, which starts in February. Trenholme’s brother-in-law is now chair of the KEEF board and he and his wife travel to Kenya annually, at their own expense, to interview hundreds of students competing for a limited number of spots.

“They interview I think

400 kids and … last year they had 94 spaces,” says Trenholme. “[It’s] $600 a year per child, and that gives them enough money for school, lodg-ing, eating, medical sup-plies, books, everything.”

Kids referred to the program are students who show academic promise, but who are living in poverty. KEEF

not only needs to be able to fund new students, but continuing students as well.

To donate to KEEF or to sponsor a student, send cheques to 904-2135 Argyle Ave., West Vancouver, BC, V7V 1A5 or visit kenyaneducation.org, and write “Brenda’s Ride” in the memo or comment field.

CASBC fundraising to buy Kinnaird BluffsThe Kinnaird Bluffs are up for

sale and one organization is trying to raise the money to buy them for the community.

The Climbers’ Access Society of BC (CASBC) has started a Go Raise Funds campaign to collect the $57,000 needed to buy the property the bluffs are located on, before somebody else does.

Vince Hempsall, Kootenay direc-tor of CASBC, says the concern is that a private property owner would no longer allow climbers access to the bluffs.

The current property owner has allowed climbers to access the property and agreed to take down an advertisement for the property, to give the CASBC time to raise money.

Another concern raised by the CASBC on the Go Raise Funds page is that someone could buy the bluffs and then extract the granite from them, but Hempsall says they’ve since discovered that current zoning would make that very difficult to do.

“That said, it is beautiful rock, and if someone wanted to work hard enough and had enough money, they could theoretically change the zoning,” he says.

So far the campaign has raised $2,115 on the Go Raise Funds page,

but people can also donate through the CASBC website, and Hempsall is still waiting to hear back from the treasurer to find out how much has been raised through the site.

Once the Kinnaird Bluffs have been purchased by the CASBC,

they will be donated as a public park.

Those who would like to con-tribute to the Go Raise Funds campaign can do so at goraise-funds.com/projects/save-kinnaird-bluffs-rock-climbing-area-in-bc.

Rossland residents Keith Robine and Jesse Brown climb a south-facing cliff at Kinnaird, one of nine different rock climbing walls at the area. Because of its southern exposure, Kinnaird is a popular climbing spot most months of the year. Vince Hempsall photo

Long-time priest retires from Boundary Parish

The Reverend Simon Shenstone has retired after 28 years with Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Grand Forks and the Boundary Parish. As head priest for the Boundary Parish, Shenstone also precided over St. Jude in Greenwood and St. Mary in Kettle Valley. For Shenstone, who of-ficially retired on Dec. 31, it was an interesting journey to get to the Boundary.

He grew up in Southeast England and came to North American to live on a Lakota (Sioux) reservation in South Dakota. He then hitchhiked across North American when he was 19. Later on, he met his wife Juno on a greyhound bus. They were married in 1970 and lived in a teepee in the Sierra Foothills of California. Unfortunately, a friend burnt the teepee down and they lost most of their possession forc-ing Shenstone to return home to England.

Shenstone eventually moved back to North America but ended up coming to Canada with his wife. They settled into an area above Christina Lake where they lived in a teepee. “We moved around to where there was good water and food,” said

Craig Lindsay photo

The Reverend Simon Shenstone has retired after 28 years at the head of the Boundary Parish, which includes the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Grand Forks.

Shenstone. “We were hunter/gatherers for about five years mov-ing our teepee around from place to place in the mountains above

Christina Lake.”Shenstone became

reacquainted with Christianity during his time there and eventually felt a calling. He ended up

back in England study-ing theology at Oxford University.

“I graduated from Oxford in 1988 and was placed by the Bishop of

Kootenay at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Grand Forks,” he said. “I was ordained a priest the following year and became a priest in charge

of Boundary Parish. I have had the ministry ever since.”

Filling in temporarily for Shenstone is John Ruder, a retired priest

from Castlegar. Ruder has been appointed inter-im leader for the congre-gation until Shenstone’s position is filled perma-nently.

Friends of Kootenay Lake now a society

After 3½ years of service, the Friends of Kootenay Lake has be-come an official society.

Under the diligent fa-cilitation of Claire de la Salle, the hard work of an active steering com-mittee and hundreds of dedicated members and volunteers, the group has evolved into the Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society.

Since its inception in 2012 the society has devoted its efforts to improve the health and stewardship of Kootenay Lake through monitor-ing, habitat restoration, capacity building and the empowerment of local communities and stake-holders. The society has delivered many success-ful projects and events around our many lake communities, that have inspired folks to be true stewards of this vast and integral body of water.

The Friends of Ko ote n ay L a ke Stewardship Society thanks all volunteers and members who have supported, shown inter-est and given time to volunteer for important projects and events.

Every lakeside commu-nity member has a role to play in protecting the lake’s immense value.

If you care about Kootenay Lake and want to preserve its natural values for generations to come, you can check friendsofkootenaylake.ca and sign up for eNews, events and actions tak-ing place over the next few months, or you can contact the society with specific questions about its programs.

NEW YEAR’S BABY

ARRIVES FOUR DAYS

LATE

Will Johnson photo

Layla Mackenzie McTeer, with par-ents Melanie Spray and Joey McTeer, was the first baby to arrive at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in 2016. She was delivered at 8:25 a.m. on Jan. 2 weighing in at six pounds and 15 ounces. Continuing an annual tradition, the Tuesday Morning Quilters dropped off batik-style creations made especially for mom and her New Year’s baby. The couple, originally from Rossland, live in Warfield now. Melanie works as a pharmacy technician in Fruitvale and Joey at Interfor in Castlegar.

Black Jack ski club in Rossland held a Tour de Soup on Saturday. Skiing was by donation for the day and skiers could stop at the three Black Jack cabins to try soups from different restaurants. Money raised at the event will benefit the Black Jack skier development programs. Pictured here: Sabra Norton, Grace Hall, Lillia Parum and Scott Mckinnon eat soup at the Trail Head cabin.
