FOUNDATIONSCheck to ensure that no new cracks haveappeared and that existing ones have notincreased in size. Call in an expert to fillthe cracks and solve the problem onceand for all.

WINDOWSIf the paint on windows, outside cladding,or the patio has peeled, the wood is prob-ably damp. Any rotten wood should bereplaced before repainting.

DRIVEWAYExamine your driveway and other pavedsurfaces, including those of indoorgarages. Identify all the potholes andcracks in the asphalt that will have to berepaired. Stepping stones in walkwaysthat have broken, chipped, lifted, or sunkover the winter will also need repairing.

Do you feel that painting is a tediouschore to avoid, best left for those yearswhen you are moving into an emptyapartment or house? Yet, freshening upthe rooms in your home is the greatestway to do a quick and inexpensiverevamp of your décor. You might feelmore prepared to take on the task if youknow a few tricks and tips that will keepyou singing while you work.

The most important thing to rememberbefore starting a paint job is to be wellorganized. Cover the floor with plasticsheets, wear old clothes, and have all thenecessary tools on hand. Quality brushesfor precision work and rollers for largesurfaces are essential right from the start.

PREPARING THE SURFACE

A thorough preparation of the surface tobe painted is absolutely necessary. If it’sunpainted drywall, the surface must bedusted, and walls covered in latex paintmust be washed. If the walls were previ-ously painted with oil-based paints, theywill have to be sanded and any dustremoved. A primer should be applied towallpaper, glass, fabric, drywall, or wood-work, which will facilitate the applicationof your coloured paint and provide bettercoverage. If necessary, use joint com-pound to fill any holes and cracks or tolevel an uneven wall. Use painter’s tape tocover any fixtures, mouldings, or othersurfaces that you don’t want splattered oredged with paint.

PAINTING

When it’s time to start the actual paint-ing, begin with the corners of the wallsand ceilings. In order to get an evenlook, use both vertical and horizontalbrush strokes. Once all the cornershave been covered, use a roller tospread the paint from bottom to top,taking care not to remove paint alreadyapplied to the wall. Continue in thisway, overlapping the part alreadypainted. When painting doors, startwith the mouldings before progressingto the door panels.

EDGES

If you are doing a whole room, start withthe ceiling. This way, drips will not falland spoil new paint on the walls. Whenpainting the edge of a ceiling, you canalso paint the top of the wall in order tocompletely cover the junction betweenthe two surfaces. This will help youwhen the time comes to paint the top ofthe wall. A straight, clean edge requires alot of skill and a steady hand that canonly be learned with practice. It helps touse a good quality brush with bristles cutat an angle. If you aren’t putting freshpaint on the ceiling, use painter’s tapealong all ceiling edges before starting onthe walls.

By following these few suggestions youcan be sure of one thing: the job will turnout to be a lot easier and a lot more funthan you’d expected!
