West Linn Adult Community Center Newsletter

Letter from Tiffany Thanks to funds provided by our

Friends group, we now have a new bus for the Adult Community Center! As I mentioned in the last newsletter, our Ride Connection bus contract was not renewed, so it was necessary to look at other transportation options for our trips and activities. Thank you, again, to the Friends for funding this valuable

resource for the patrons of the ACC.As of August 27th, I am working reduced hours so that I am able to spend more time with my daughter, Isla. Terri and Tarra are temporarily stepping in to take on the remaining time. Tarra will be here Mondays, I will be here Tuesdays, Wednesdays and half of each Thursday and Terri will be here the other half of Thursdays and all day on Fridays. I am so thankful to them for their help in keeping the ACC running smoothly. Isla’s growing up so fast and I can’t bear to miss this important time in her life.We have a unique and exciting workshop taking place over the next three months that I hope you’ll consider being a part of. It is called Capturing Life through Creative Writing and is being facilitated by a very talented singer songwriter that lives right here in West Linn. Naomi LaViolette brought her workshop idea to me a while ago and I am delighted to offer it here. Quoting from the promotional flyer, the workshop will be “A unique, interactive workshop for telling your story through poem or song. Naomi LaViolette’s Cap-turing Life workshops are a unique interactive experience. Partici-pants will hear a concert of original music and receive direction and encouragement in their own journaling, poetry and songwrit-ing. There is no musical experience needed to enjoy this uplifting and inspiring experience.” The workshop dates, times and other details are listed on page 6.We are also offering a new class called Marimba Ensemble. This will be taught by retired music teacher, Martin Sobelman, and promises to an educational and enjoyable experience. The details for this class are also listed on page 6. The marimbas will be provided. There’s much to look forward to ~ Tiffany

Gardening Through the Golden Years – by Keli Stevens

(Editors’ note: Keli Stevens is on vacation, and this article ran first in the July/August 2017 edition of the newsletter.)

An interest in gardening should not have to be abandoned as someone enters the later stages of life. Yet, unfortunately, that is often the case. Changes in mobility, energy, vision or dexterity can make a favorite hobby a struggle, or even impossible. Luckily a little planning and adaptation can keep the senior gardener enjoying a beloved past time and reaping a bounty of rewards.

There are a host of reasons that the gardening is beneficial to us. These benefits become even more valuable as we age. The routine acts of garden-ing can be very soothing and relaxing to the mind. Some avid gardeners report entering a meditative state as they work, lowering heart rate and blood pressure. The physical benefits are another great reason to pursue this ac-tivity. Stretching, coordination, balance and strength are all exercised. This

can lead to better or maintained mobility. Financially, gardening can have advantages too. Growing and eating your own food can save you money. Those on a fixed income enjoy being able to stretch their monthly budget and cut shopping lists by growing and preserving fruits and vegetables. The fresh homegrown produce provides a wealth of fiber and nutrition that can keep the body healthy and ward off illness.

Gardening can be enjoyed well into one’s golden years if a few adjustments are made to accom-modate changing abilities. Often, something as simple as placing a few chairs or seating options around the garden area, or investing in long handled tools, can make a big difference and keep this activity safe, comfortable and enjoyable. Other helpful ideas include using a gardening tool cart on wheels that can double as a seat, aid in moving heavy objects, and serve as convenient tool stor-age. You can purchase these at most garden centers or find plans to build one online. Raised beds with smooth pathways around them can be ideal for a wheelchair or walker to gain access. The sides can provide a readily available seat or support. You can make the beds as high as needed. They not only provide ease of access, but can cut down on weeding. Make sure you can reach the center of the bed from all sides to avoid dangerous balance challenges. Consider spray painting all hand tools white for easy locating when set down. If dexterity is an issue you might want to use seed tape, a seed clicker, or soil that has the seeds already added to it. You can also buy seed mats that you cut with scissors to fit your planting space. The seed matts only need to be watered and will grow into a lush cluster of vegetation without any need for laborious digging or planting. A lightweight, coiled hose is a great solution for watering without having to lift a heavy watering can. A long handled, rain nozzle attachment can be very helpful in reaching over and around things. The type of plants you choose can also effect how pleasurable the garden experience can be. Its best to choose plants that are hardy and easy to grow. Plants that require less watering and care, smell good, feel velvety, are colorful or attract butterflies can maximize gardening enjoyment.

Some other good tips for senior gardening are wearing loose clothing, a hat and sun screen, drinking water and also taking a cell phone out with you. Limit your sun exposure by tending the garden in early morning or evening hours. Lastly, pay close attention to your body. If you run out of energy or feel overheated, take a break and go inside. The plants will wait for you.

Gardening is one of the most popular hobbies in America today and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities if a little thought, adaptation and planning is employed. Whether you take steps for yourself or an aging loved one, senior gardeners can continue to enjoy a fruitful harvest of benefits and a bounty of well-being.

They Get By With a Little Help From Their

FRIENDS

At the beginning of this fiscal year and as the new FRIENDS’ board takes the helm, we’d like to thank all FRIENDS for their support of the past as we look forward with enthusiasm.

As a non-profit that was organized to “promote the adult services and community use at the WLACC the FRIENDS have been able to help fund projects at the WLACC to the tune of well over $250,000. We’ve also been given the space to house FRIENDS main source of funding, our community treasure, The Little Shop on Rosemont.

We’ve evolved over the many years of helping the City of West Linn build this community center with large capital outlay to now being able to focus on funding the ACC’s annual programming and being community ambassadors.

The Board will be discussing how we can best support the ACC in their efforts to offer programs, assistance and social activities that further the well being of our 50+ community citizens.

We have a jewel of a community center in our midst and it’s been a privilege to volunteer my time to promote the ACC in a variety of ways. Every patron of the ACC is an ambassador to

our community. We FRIENDS can focus on opening our arms to every 50+ member of this community and welcoming them to participate in whichever way it may help them to become involved and stay both mentally and physically active; it’s where friendships are cultivated. We FRIENDS are here to promote the ACC and want the 50+ community to enjoy this jewel as much as we do. Please welcome new patrons to the ACC; there’s no membership! I’ll bet, down the road, they too will want to become a FRIEND.

We rely on The Little Shop on Rosemont as our major fund raiser. It is run by volunteer efforts. John and Veronica have unselfishly given their time, efforts and expertise but cannot do this with-out the same from many volunteers. A few hours a week or becoming a substitute when a volunteer is absent is small but will give much back to you, to this community and ultimately to the ACC.

I know each FRIEND has given us support finan-cially through their dues and additional donations but please consider giving of your time to volun-teer a few hours to help in the gift shop. Anyone in the shop can offer you a volunteer application.

The Board of Director’s, Scott, Jeanne, Lorene, Maggie, Boyd, Carole and myself look forward to implementing the mission of FACC-WL.

The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round

With the ending of the bus contract with Ride Connection and due to the generosity of all those that have donated in time and money towards fund raising the Friends of the Adult Community Center have been able to fund the City of West Linn’s purchase of a brand new bus for the ACC. It’s a 2018 Starcraft Allstar 22 ADA shuttle bus able to carry 14 passengers with 2 wheelchair lift options and, as requested by Al and Bill, a back-up mirror. Hopefully by this publication you’ll all have seen it in the ACC’s parking lot and will be looking forward to your first venture out with one of our volunteer driver’s at the helm. It’s lined up to be wheeling round and round, all through the town by September.
