News from the Administration

"This Institution is an Equal Opportunity

Provider"

I cannot believe it is May and we are getting ready for graduation. It seems like just yesterday we were removing snow. Well, maybe that was yesterday.

It has been a busy spring with hiring new staff. I never hold back a staff person trying to better themselves and use the degrees they have obtained. I do feel good about the people we have hired and look forward to them joining our Cadet Team. Like any business, if we hired correctly, we have the opportunity to improve ourselves.

As we wrap up another year I thought I would share what our administration team is working on. The question we have been discussing is: what is the one thing we can do to improve our school and more specifically student success? It is not an easy question as we look at all the different components of a school, along with the busyness of every day activities. In evaluating our process it is obvious that most initiatives do not blow up. It is that they just fade away as people are busy with all the other aspects their jobs.. Thus, we are looking at the one thing that will help us help our students while not having to put our normal daily activities on hold.

Information gathered from our strategic planning will provide us with great insights as we continue to prepare for our future.

I wish our seniors the very best and want to congratulate them on their graduation. They have been a great class and I am the fortunate one that has gotten to know a few of them.

Have a great summer!

Nurse’s Station

It’s hard to believe but another school year is wrapping up! Here are some reminders:

• Please remember to pick up all student medications from the nurse’s office, as they will be discarded on the last day of school. Also, Care Plans and Medication Forms for next year are now available.

• New Immunization Schedules: Check with your health care provider to make sure you are properly immunized, especially children entering Kindergarten and rising 7th graders. All students going into 7th grade are required to have a TDap booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) prior to entering 7th grade.

May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month!

Allergic disease is the leading cause of missed school days for children. It’s now peak season for allergy and asthma sufferers, and a perfect time to recognize the causes of asthma and allergies to best prevent and treat attacks. Make sure your child’s teachers and coaches are aware of your child’s asthma so they can provide the necessary help.

If you suffer from allergies, you know the symptoms: coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, and scratchy throat. Common allergens and irritants found in and around the home are pollen, dust mites, mold, insect droppings, pet dander, and secondhand smoke. Exposure to these allergens can even bring about a serious asthma attack.

During an Asthma attack, airways become narrowed and breathing can become extremely difficult. Other asthma triggers include respiratory infections, pollen (trees, grasses, weeds) air pollution, food, allergies, cleaning products, perfumes, exercise, and cold air exposure. Common asthma symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Asthma cannot be cured but it can be controlled.

Clear your home of allergy/asthma triggers – choose not to smoke- keep bed linens clean –keep pets out of the bedrooms –clean up the mold and get rid of excess moisture – fix leaky plumbing –limit use of pesticide sprays. Dust and vacuum regularly, and use air conditioning when possible.

Parents Do Your Homework - Please fill out an Allergy or Asthma Action Plan for your student – these forms are available in the nurse’s office. List allergies, triggers, medications, and phone numbers. Talk to your pediatrician about the best daily management for your child’s symptoms.
