The Lakewood City School District opened two brand new elementary schools and two brand new middle schools this fall. This completes Phase I of the district’s school facility plan to rebuild or renovate all of the school buildings in the district into state of the art schools. The facility plan and the funding for Phase I and Phase II are due to the generosity and support of the Lakewood community. The district is continuing this district- wide facility process by embarking on Phase II of the construction plan. We are very excited to announce that the West Shore Career and Technical District will be completely renovated during this phase. Work will begin in December during winter break. The entire west side of Lakewood High School will be closed during the renovation process. Modular units will serve as classrooms for the west side of the building and will be located in the North Lot during construction. The current West Shore classrooms will not be disrupted during this year-and-a-half process. The building will reopen to house the West Shore Career and Technical District programs in the fall of the 2009-2010 school year. In the plans are new classroom spaces which will include a restaurant for the Culinary Arts program. I will give you construction updates during this renovation process or you can log on to the Lakewood City Schools website for the latest information during Phase II of the construction at www.lakewoodcityschools.org . How does a raccoon help teachour Auto Technology students?

On September 18, our Work Study Coordinator,Denise Eplin, left her car door open…outside…overnight. A raccoon decided to movein…and he was not a very nice tenant. In fact, hepunctured the vinyl, shredded the visors, andgenerally made quite a mess. Enter Mark Sandersa vinyl repair specialist and owner of Dun-RiteLeather and Vinyl. He brought his tools andtechnique and shared with our Auto Technologystudents how to repair punctured and torn vinyl. The students also learned how to replace visorsfrom their instructor Mr. Mike Szittai. And theraccoon…well… he taught us all the importanceof never leaving a door open on a car.

The Culinary Vegetable Institutewas attended this summer by a group of hardworking and dedicated Culinary/Prostart studentsand graduates. Their purpose was to volunteer atthe 2007 Food and Wine Celebration. The chefsand restaurateurs were there to benefit aneducational program called Veggie U.

The purpose of Veggie U is to educate gradeschool children to change bad eating habits.Children are given seeds, which they plant, nurtureand then harvest the vegetables. They then get toeat the fruits of their labor!

Our students worked three 12 hour days doingfood prep, setting tables and equipment, andnetworking with famous chefs and celebrities. This was an opportunity that few young peoplehave and they gained much experience throughgiving up a few days during their summer break.
