One of these wild7lowers is the Bluebonnet, which is the symbol of our state and is one of the most beautiful 7lowers. The scienti7ic name for Bluebonnet is Lupinus Texenis. They are also called buffalo clover, wolf 7lower and el conejo, or rabbit in Spanish. There is more than one type of Bluebonnet. Most of them are blue, but some of them are purple, maroon, or even pink. During mild winters, Bluebonnets can start blooming in late February or March, but they can also bloom in early April. But Bluebonnets weren’t always around. The book Legends and Lore of Texas Wild7lowers tells of the legend of how Bluebonnets 7irst appeared in Texas. The legend says that Texas’s weather was very harsh on the Native American peoples that lived on the land before the Europeans arrived. The summer had burning temperatures with dust storms, the fall had 7loods, and the winter had harsh temperatures with blizzards. The tribes knew that it was clear that “The Great Spirit” was angry at them. One night when everyone was asleep, a little girl sneaked out of her family’s teepee. She got some coals, went to the top of a hill, and started a 7ire. She held up her prized possession, which was a doll, and threw it in the 7ire saying that it was for the “The Great Spirit.” When the 7ire was out, she took the ash and threw it north, south, east, and west. Then, she went back to bed. The next morning, when the tribe woke up, what was a dry and bare land had beautiful greenery with blue 7lowers on it. It was clear that the Great Spirit forgave them. Lucky for us, the Bluebonnets have remained and we Texans, as well as other visitors to Texas. can enjoy the Bluebonnets every spring. IT’S BLUEBONNET TIME! Last time it had snowed, there was no alert because the snow melted by noon, but this time it kept snowing. School was cancelled because of the ice. It started Monday and Tuesday…then Wednesday… then 7inally school was cancelled the entire week. Working parents got very annoyed by this. Power started to go out, and pipes started bursting. Some houses had water shut off, too. When it was over, people started to realize how lucky they were to have these things. If you weren’t one of these victims, you were really lucky. In my family, we had lots of fun. We lost power for 24 hours. We put on our snow gear and went sledding on the Edloe bridge. That was an epic failure because we didn’t have real sleds and couldn’t go fast enough. We went sledding with Shelby and Lanie Henry (Third and First Grades) and saw Tyler Graf (First Grade) out there, too! We were puppy-sitting my grandmother’s dog because she broke her leg. Her name is Millie, and she was jumping for joy. This was her 7irst time in snow! On Monday night, we stayed at our aunt’s house. Then, she lost power, so we stayed at my Lala’s house. When we came home on Tuesday, we had power! It would come on and off. My aunt and uncle and three cousins still hadn’t gotten their power back, so they came to our house. My grandmother, Jammy, lost her power, so she also came to stay. We kept the 7ireplace burning to keep us all warm. We baked a lot. My brownies were a huge hit. THE LAST KIDS ON EARTH AND THE SKELETON ROAD BY MAX BRALLIER BOOK REVIEW BY MATHEW THOMAS

Lastmonth,thePerseveranceRoverlandedonMarswithfourmainobjectives.Thesewereto1)identifypastenvironments capable of supporting microbial life, 2)seek signs of past microbial life in those habitats, especially inrocksknowntopreservesignsofmicrobiallife, 3) collect core rocks and “soil” samples and storethem on the Martian surface, and 4) test oxygenproductionfromtheMartianatmospheretomakesureitcould one day be terraformed. Microbial life forms aresingle-celledorganismslikebacteria.

Tocompletetheseobjectives, theroverwasequippedwith some very cool tools, such as SUPERCAM, a lasermicro-imager; MASTCAM-Z, zoomable panoramiccameras; MEDA, a weather station; SHERLOC, anultravioletspectrometer;WATSON,acamera;andMOXIE,whichproducesoxygenfromMartianCO2.

Perseverance launched fromCapeCanaveralon July30, 2020, and sailed through the vast, dark vacuum ofspaceforsevenmonths.AsitenteredMars,Perseverancedid something often referred to as EDL (entry, descent, and landing). This sequence startedwhenPerseveranceentered the top of the Martian atmosphere, travellingnearly 12,500 miles. About 10 minutes before startingthissequence,Perseveranceshed itscruisestage, whichhouses solar panels, a radio, and fuel tanks used for itsflight to Mars. Only the protective Aeroshell, with therover and the descent stage inside, actually made it toMars. The rover also fired small thrusters to reorientitself and point its heat shield for what came next. AsPerseveranceenteredtheMartianatmosphere, itsloweddown drastically and, in doing so, heated up to a peakheat of 2,370 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat shield thenslowed Perseverance to about 1,000miles per hour. Atthis point, it was then safe to deploy the supersonicparachute. About 20 seconds after parachutedeployment, the heat shield then dropped away and

exposedtherovertotheMartiansurface.Aftertheparachuteslowed Perseverance down to about 200miles per hour, therover cut itself free and its backshell fired rockets, droppedPerseverancedownon theMartiansurface, and flewaway toan uncontrolled landing a safe distance away fromPerseverance.

I asked Richard Garriott, a family friend and the firsthumanbeingtohavebeentospace, thenorthandsouthpoles, and thebottomof theMarianasTrench, aseriesofquestionsrelated to Perseverance. Here are the questions and hisresponses:Q, What will Perseverance mean for human space travel toMars?

Q.WhendoyouthinkhumanswillgettoMars?A.10yearsifwe’reoptimistic,20yearsifwe’repessimistic.Q.WhatwillhumansdooncetheygettoMars?A. 1.Survive. 2. Grow a colony that will be the first humanexpansionbeyondEarth,andhopefullynotthelast!So,asyoucansee,Perseveranceisagreatachievementfor
