A Note from Our Director ...

The first Shakespearean play I ever saw was "The Taming OfThe Shrew" and since then I have been a fan as an actor, director and audiencemember. One of the enduring things about Shakespeare is its timelessness andversatility even after several hundred years. His plays have been set in almost everyhistorical period and even in some imaginary ones. "Kiss Me, Kate" is a greatexample of that versatility. I've wanted to be involved in a production of this showever since I learned about it. What is brilliant about "Kiss Me, Kate" is that it takesthis wonderful play by Shakespeare; adds the great music of Cole Porter and blendswhat takes place offstage, and on stage, so you're not quite sure where one playends and the other begins. And does all this without losing the basic story of "TheTaming Of The Shrew".

Someone said to me that "Kiss Me, Kate" is the first "Shakespeare In Love".I agree. The film "Shakespeare In Love" introduced Shakespeare to millions ofpeople who had always avoided his works. They discovered that he was not as"stuffy" or as difficult to understand as they thought. I hope that after you see"Kiss Me, Kate", you will have a better understanding of how much fun Shakespearecan be and might even go see one of his plays sometime.

I am very proud of this cast, orchestra, crew and staff who have worked sohard on this production. When I began rehearsals for this show, I challengedeveryone to make "Kiss Me, Kate" something special; to work harder, to be morecreative and to do things differently than they've done in the past, even though itmay seem uncomfortable. They have all worked very hard to meet those chal-lenges. How successful we have been is up to you, the audience, to decide. Hope-fully, you will be pleasantly surprised. So sit back, relax and enjoy the perfor-mances of a very talented cast, orchestra and crew in this wonderful production of"Kiss Me, Kate".

-Steven Lambert, Director

"The thing that makes Shakespeare breathtaking and defines poetry, is the simul-taneous compression of language and the expansion of meaning. " - Tom Stoppard

and cultural programs such as ours. Herein the BayArea, we are fortunate to havemany companies that have initiated suchprograms. Remember, matching contri-butions are not automatic. YOU mustnotify your employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If youare employed by one of these companiesand are one of our supporters, take ad-vantage of this wonderful way to supportone of your favorite non-profit associa-tions, WVLO. It isn't too late to matchyour contribution for this season.

Corporate Bonus

Whenever you donate to a non-profitgroup likeWVLOA, you can double yourcontribution to the organization by tak-ing advantage of your company's match-ing gift program (even after retirement).Perhaps the most popular way for com-panies to make charitable contributionsis through a matching contribution pro-gram wherein the company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation one oftheir employees gives to a favorite char-ity.And often, these companies will onlymatch contributions made to developarts
