22nd Poison Rally

With the Poison Rally being one of the biggest rallies and

the last one for the year, it is never missed by a number of

Ulysses Chapter Member both in SA and across the bor-

ders . There were members from Botswana & Zimbabwe at

the rally.

This year, until the rain set in, there was going be 6 West

Wits members attending. But the heavy rain caused an exo-

dus leaving only Allan [Chapter President] & Trudie [Chapter

Treasurer that packed the BMW R1200 GS Adv and rode to

the Kroonstad in the rain most of the way. But the Poison was not going to be missed just because of some

rain. Set off from C/ville for Kroonstad just on 09h00.

Allan & Trudie arrived at the en-

trance to the Rally at 11h15 and

quickly went through the system as

they had pre-booked.

First call of business was to ride

around the campsite to look for

known fellow bikers.

Poison Rally

The Wild Hogs MCC from Fochville had a huge tent roof where about 6 small dome

tents with the other larger tents pitched outside. Note in the photo below how

they even had tables standing on ground sheets. The Wild Hogs were prepared for

the rainy weekend for sure. The Wild Hog Chapter had a large member turnout.

It was also noted that a large camp site containing the Comanches MCC who had

almost a full membership turnout.

Allan & Trudie went to visit Ulysses members seen camping in the Tent Village

where some 150 tents had been pitched and people had rented for the weekend.

Even thou the price

was a bit pricey but

the booked tent was

equipped with 2 x

good size camping

stretchers , ground

sheet, bedding and

pillows, 2 x plastic

chairs. Tents also

equipped with lights.

There was about

1.5m space at the

bottom of the

stretcher where one

could use for pan-

niers etc.

The organisers mentioned that if they had an ad-

ditional 100 tents, they would have been also been

taken up by the bikers.

So for next year if you feel like attending the Poi-

son Rally and can’t carry all the camping gear & kitchen sink on your superbike, then give this option a thought.

At the indoor swimming pool building a tent had

been pitched under the roofing and just a stone

through from the inside ablutions.

Bikers found every nook and cranny to try and

stay dry or at least attempted to stay dry.

No not a poise, but to show how bad the mud was. Trudie skidded and

was nearly on her tosh a number of times through the course of Friday

& Saturday whilst walking around.

The general comments around the camp site was this year with all the

rain [it had rain for 3 days prior to the Rally], nobody needed a hammer to force the tent pegs into the ground,

it was so soft. A bonus being there was no bent pegs this year.

A point was made to see how many Ulysses members could seen and to have a short chat to each. Bumped into

the Ulysses National Vice President, Jan Putter.

With the rain Charlie really went out of his

way to keep the bike dry and shinning.

Have you ever noticed the printing on the T-shirts?

“Real Bikers go to the Poison Rally”? With the continu-

ous rain over the weekend, those that attended this

years wet rally definitely earned the name of a “Real

Biker! In fact there were 5,013 Real Bikers through

the gates & a drop from previous year’s figures. Was

however great to see so many bikers even whilst such

poor weather conditions persisted all over the country.

We got wet on our way to a rally and knowing it will be

wet weekend there as well, is not a joke at all. But it

was still an awesome Rally and great seeing old friends.

Looking forward to the 2020 Poison Rally.
