After a settled start to the year it has been pleasing to
note that we have all staffing vacancies filled and we
have also secured a counsellor in training. We welcome
Ms Kate Woolfe to this position and she will base
herself at our school during her studies and will help
service our primary and high schools in West Wyalong.
Along with the additional services of Royal Far West,
who provide counselling support via video conference,
our student welfare needs are certainly being
addressed by a range of specialist services.
We continue to contract the family referral service to
assist our families in a variety of ways including help
with the NDIS and accessing a range of other
government services. Ms Perry continues her role as a
part time student welfare teacher, to touch base with
students experiencing difficulties and to provide some
guidance. Student welfare remains paramount to our
core values at West Wyalong High School and I believe
we are in a much healthier position to support our
students in 2020.
In regards to other staffing news, Mr Shane Spellman
has joined us from Canberra. Mr Spellman is a trained
music teacher and relieves for Mrs Wilson who is on
maternity leave. We are fortunate to secure another
music trained teacher in West Wyalong and we
welcome Mr Spellman to our community.
Please note that there has been a change to the dates
for the P&C annual general meeting. The meeting will
be held in the school library at 7.00pm on Monday 2nd
March. Hopefully we will have enough people in
attendance to fill the necessary executive team.
STAY CONNECTED A reminder to those students, parents, carers and family who have yet to “Like” our Facebook page, please do, so that you will receive notifications and important information about upcoming events.

As always, students are encouraged to dress up in their House colours, however, please remember that they will need to be able to swim without making a mess or causing a safety hazard which may involve removing special costumes before swimming and putting them back on later. Year 7 and new students will be informed of their House group prior to the Carnival and House meetings will also be held. Students are reminded to bring swimmers, towel, sunscreen, water bottle and lunch if required. There will be a sausage sizzle run by Year 12 and the pool canteen will be open throughout the day. Parents are welcome to come along and watch or support the children at any stage throughout the day. Events are usually completed in the following order - Individual medley, 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 100m freestyle and relays. There will be a 40 minute lunch break around midday.
It is always a fun, enjoyable day for all involved and it is a great opportunity for our more competitive swimmers to perform at a high level and maybe even set a new school record! A copy of the current school swimming records will soon be on our school website. At this stage the Western Region Sports website has not been updated. When it is students will be notified. All students are encouraged to listen to the notices and assembly for information. Feel free to contact Mr Duncan if you have any enquiries.

MAKE BULLYING HISTORY WORKSHOP On Monday 10th February, students in years 7-10
attended the “Make Bullying History” workshop, lead
by Brett Murray. This program is rated the number one
health and well-being program in NSW - it was
incredibly beneficial for our students.
Brett works alongside the Sharks NRL team as part of
their community engagement and has spoken in
schools for the last 18 years.
He discussed what bullying is and what it isn’t and went
deeper into the mindset of bullies. Brett explored
emotional responses as opposed to logical responses
with the students - which was very positive for them to
hear.
Brett highlighted the importance of accountability,
self-discipline and responsibility for your actions. He
encouraged all of our students to encourage each
other with words and actions and eventually people’s
beliefs systems about themselves would start to shift.
“The only time success comes before work is in the
dictionary”
This was a great program for our students to attend
and West Wyalong High School would like to extend a
huge thank you to Brett for his time.
ANGORA WETHER & SKILLS WORKSHOP
2019
Was held on a hot, windy day at the West Wyalong
showgrounds on 5th December. Participants came from
Condobolin High, Narrandera High, Molong Central,
Narromine High and West Wyalong High. The crowd of
students, teachers, guest speakers and on-lookers
were amply catered for by West Wyalong High’s senior
Hospitality class – a fastastic job was done! Guest
speakers included Craig Clancy from AMMO, Meagan
Mrowka, Michael Mrowka, and Sarah Hanlon. We were
also joined by AMMO Chairman Brett Grant, who came
along to see what it was all about! West Wyalong
High’s Principal Mr Greg Sheens also joined us for part
of the event as well. The West Wyalong Show Society
kindly donated ribbons for the events. The event was
put together and organized by Mandy Statham from
Willow Glen Angoras. Teachers who accompanied their
students included Matt Shady – Narrandera, Anne
Earney – Condobolin, Sally Pokoney – Molong Central
and Mandy Statham – West Wyalong.
Sessions included:
What is Mohair - Mohair types - Craig Clancy – AMMO
Tips for Angora Paraders - Meagan Mrowka
Angora Paraders Competition with a twist - Judge Michael Mrowka
Young Judges Competition - Judge Michael Mrowka
Angora Wether Health Matters - Sarah Hanlon BVetBio/BVSc
Craig from AMMO brought along many mohair samples
of the different classes of mohair, along with some
samples of fault lines that can be encountered. It would
have taken him some time to gather and prepare such
a display! Students were a little shy at first but soon got
into the swing of things asking many questions and
benefitting from Craig’s expert knowledge.
Meagan Mrowka from Narromine High spoke to
students about Paraders guidelines, what to do as an
Angora Parader as well as what a Judge of this
competition would look for. Meagan was amply
qualified as she has had much success as a Parader in
her youth and as a Judge in her recent years.
Meagan’s little brother Michael gave up his valuable
time from his work to come and Judge the Paraders
with a Twist and the Young Judges Competitions. The
Paraders competition format was changed to
accommodate the great number of participants.
Michael from his successful experiences was able to
give the students many tips and what to look out for in
such events.

SELF DIRECTED LEARNING PROJECT
As part of their Self Directed Learning project in term 4
of last year, Jess Glasgow and Amelia Rees chose to
decorate a wall in the girls' bathroom. Their goal was
to contribute to the improvement of their peers
wellbeing and to deliver the message of positive
mental health and self image.
The girls surveyed female students across the year
groups to gain more insight into their opinions about
body image, positive mental health and wellbeing to
determine the most meaningful and inspirational
quote. They also researched appropriate colours to use
in the background that would add to positive mental
health.
The end result is a beautiful, bright wall that has
already received some positive feedback from the
students utilising the bathrooms. Well done Jess and
Amelia.
Thank you to the members of staff who have helped
support the girls to complete this project.
CWA NSW SCHOLARSHIPS
West Wyalong High School would like to extend a huge
thank you to the Country Women’s Association of
NSW. Four of our students received Phillip Group
Education Grants today at our assembly. We thank
everyone involved in the CWA for the continued
support that they offer our students.
