M&S Change Stance on Parking Charges M&S in Westbourne has reduced the amount you need to spend to get a refund on your parking. They recently caused outrage among local shoppers and traders by introducing a £3 parking ticket and requiring a spend of £15 to get this back. You now only need to spend a more reasonable £5 in the M&S store to get your £3 parking ticket refunded. This change was welcomed by some, but traders are still reporting a delcine in customers visiting the area. Local councillors and the Westbourne Traders Association are meeting with M&S to discuss future options, keep an eye on our website for the very latest.

What is your background?I was involved in starting up an information services company some years ago, I've run the southern region of the Zurich Advice Network where I looked after 150 nancial advisers covering areas including Bournemouth. I am currently the chairman of a civil engineering company in Southampton and I am also the associate director of a PR government relations company in London. What is your connection to the local area?I grew up in Belfast and in Hertfordshire, I moved to Southampton in 1991 to go to university and I've stayed on the south coast ever since. I'm not from Bournemouth, but I am more than a conference tourist to Bournemouth. Why might Westbourne be weathering the economic downturn better than other areas? In an area like Westbourne we are not so susceptible to the economic downturn because a sizeable proportion of the local population are retired, so their circumstances haven't massively changed. Westbourne is also a very attractive place to come and shop. I think there is generally an element of rebellion against the uniformity of many town centres across the country. What's your opinion on the 40mph limit on the Wessex Way?I've joined the Facebook group in opposition. I am addressing this as a local resident, I do not see the problem they are trying to solve. I want to make sure the data that is coming forward in terms of accidents is comparing apples with apples, not apples with pears, saying it's reduced accidents when we haven't hit the tourist season yet for example. Any nal message for our readers? As a member of the Westbourne community, I think we are incredibly lucky to live in what is one of the most special parts of Bournemouth, that has a diversity of fantastic local amenities and if I am lucky enough to become Bournemouth West's next MP, as a local resident I would be working to improve and enhance Westbourne and make it better than the wonderful place it already is.

What is your background?I am currently the director of a charity which is a policy charity covering relevant British politics. Before that I was a journalist for a number of years, mainly for The Times and briey on the Mail on Sunday. What is your connection to the local area?I grew up along coast in Southampton so I have been coming to Bournemouth all of my life. I've had family in the area for two decades and I have family based in Southbourne. It's central to my life.Westbourne has many small businesses and independent retailers, what policies do the Lib Dems have that look after their interests? We have quite an array of policies, the Lib Dems are concerned about excessive regulation, and we are concerned about taxation. We trying to make a fairer taxation system which should benet most small traders, who may not be making vast sums of money, any taxation changes that enable them to keep more would be benecial. We are also concerned about competition rules, current rules tend to look at things at the national level rather than the local context. What's your opinion on the 40mph limit on the Wessex Way?I drove down it this morning and it was empty, you can't help but think "I would love to drive 10 miles per hour faster" but I've also driven it in rush hour where there's no chance of 50. They're trialling it, lets see what the results of the trial are. If there is evidence that it makes a substantial dierence to safety then they'll be a case for it, if there isn't, let's get rid of it as soon as the trial nishes.Bournemouth West has been Conservative since it's creation 60 years ago, how condent are you that you can break this pattern?I think we have a real chance of breaking the pattern. It has always been Conservative but their majority has been steadily falling. The boundaries have changed and that's broadly favourable to the Lib Dems. I think the old political aliations have been breaking down and people are ready to consider an array of options before voting. Any nal message for our readers? There is a genuine choice in this election, all I can ask is that people read our literature and check out our website before they cast their vote.

Page 11: Westbourne Magazine - April 2010

Sharon Carr-Brownwww.bournemouthlabour.org

What is your background?I did a degree in Chinese and French then joined the BBC World Service in the Chinese section. From there I moved to Radio 4 working on the World at One programme. I left there when I had my second child and we moved to Bournemouth. I spent some time being a mum - we had 3 children in 3 years. Now my husband and I have a company together, he's a professional writer and I'm a proof reader. My voluntary work is perhaps even more important to me. I became a governor of Bournemouth Hospital when it became a Foundation Trust ve years ago and I am also a governor of one my son's school and a trustee of a local charity. What is your connection to the local area?I call it my home town. I moved here from Ringwood when I was 9 and my parents had lived here previously. I went to school here, I got my rst job here, it's my town and that's why I am standing.Westbourne has a high percentage of small businesses, what policies do Labour have that look after their interests? The main thing Labour is doing at the moment is supporting the economy and trying to keep the ow of money going. My parents were small business owners and I know the eects that the general economic situation can have on small businesses. What's your opinion on the 40mph limit on the Wessex Way?I would love to see the evidence that doing 40mph on this stretch of road makes it safer. If that evidence is incontrovertible then I would obey 20mph, but that road was designed as a 70mph road initially. The real problem is the short slip-roads. Nobody can negotiate it properly unless you're local and know what's coming. The answer is do something with the slip-roads, sign post it dierently or look at other options. Any nal message for our readers?I don't want people to discount me because I've got the Labour rose next to my name. Labour is where my principals lie. After the expenses debacle, it should be about how you select the individual that represents you in parliament not necessarily selecting the party.

Chris Brockway, Minister for Community Outreach, on the recently re-launched West Cli Baptist Church website.“We are constantly looking for new and improved ways of communicating with our local community and church community - that’s why we’ve just redesigned and launched our new and improved website. The website features an excellent overview of church life including all of our activities, a photoblog and links to our Facebook pages. There is also a forum, ‘West Cli Idea Storm’ , where we invite our local community to suggest how we can even more eectively be ‘the church in the community, in the community’. We talk to local resident Christian Schneider. He is on his third year at Bournemouth University and working at Solomons Solicitors and also K.K. Bullion in Westbourne.Christian is undertaking a project called ‘Bike4Buckers’ that will see him cycle over 3000 miles across America. It is in memory of Tom Buckley, a friend Christian met at school who sadly died of cancer in 2009. Despite the name, Bike4Buckers has also involved Christian climbing and running in the lead-up to the main journey, which will start in New York and end in San Francisco. Christian is due to start the mammoth cycle journey with a friend in July 2010. “I’ve raised over £2000 already”, says Christian. The money raised is for The Christie, one of Europe’s leading cancer centres. The Christie cared for Tom on many occassions. You can nd out more about Bike4Buckers and donate online at www.bike4buckers.comOn living in Westbourne, Christian says, “I love Westbourne. I’ve been here for two years, it’s got so many nice shops, not just mega-supermarkets. It’s got the great atmosphere of a small town. I love working in Westbourne, I meet so many dierent types of people”.
