Welcome to our health, tness and fashion special. In this edition we have a range of interviews, articles and promotions to help you shed a few pounds (maybe gained over the festive period!). We also have some local shops with the latest designer clothes, jewellery and shoes to make you look your best in 2011. As the VAT increase kicks in this month, 2011 looks like a tough year. This is especially true for small traders, so it’s important to visit your local shops and independent retailers. This is also our 1st Birthday, so many thanks for all support from local businesses and kind comments from our readers over the past year.

JanuaryPavement Improvements in WestbourneWe spoke to Dawn Gilbert, from the Planning & Transport department at Bournemouth Borough Council, about upcoming improvements to Westbourne roads, parking and pavement system. She explained, “The aim of the improvements are to enhance the safety of pedestrians in Westbourne. This will be achieved by widening pavements to create informal crossing points on Poole Road. The new buildouts will have tactile paving for the visually impaired and bollards to inform oncoming trac.”The work is due to start in early January 2011 and last for 4 weeks. Details of the work to be carried out is shown below with the major changes circled in red. Full details can be seen on the Bournemouth Borough Council website. What do you think of the planned work? The superb pâtisseries of Normandy and Brittany are well known to those who take advantage of Brittany Ferries’ from Poole to Cherbourg. Few will return without sampling

the extensive delights of the French pâtisseries, often bringing a box or two home with them. We spoke to Toby Sawtell about the many tantalising delights waiting at Pâtisserie Angélique, including Galettes des Rois. “The Galettes des Rois are a special cake associated with the festival of Epiphany and include a small charm (careful when biting in!). They are just one of the authentic French cakes we sell. We are proud that our Pâtisserie is routed in the true French practice of baking and producing a variety of cakes, tartes and pasties. Everything we oer is exactly what you’d nd in a typical French Pâtisserie and there is a historic provenance behind each one. Phillipe has trained as a pâtissier, chocolatier and glacier which is why we can believe in our products and we always oer a friendly service”.So why not start the year by treating yourself to a Galette des Rois and a warm drink, or have a look at the wide range of other traditional French treats waiting at Pâtisserie Angélique.

Welcome to the January Book Review and a big Happy New Year to everyone. I trust you all had a fun-lled festive season and are now ready to return to normality.

It’s traditional in the book trade to make everyone feel guilty with a ‘New Year, New You’ promotion, but since it’s cold, dark and a bit gloomy at this time of year I thought it would be a better idea to recommend some good paperbacks to curl up with on the sofa instead.

If you are feeling the need to detox, Jason Vale “The Juice Master” Slim for Life (£8.99) is always a good bet, as is Peter D’adamo Eat Right For Your Type (£8.99). Don’t forget that you can spend your Book Tokens with us. If you didn’t get the Wine Opus (£50) or World on Fire: An Epic History of the American Civil War (£30) then what better time than now?

Crime & ThrillersC. J. Box - Blue Heaven £7.99Two children witness a horric crime in the North Idaho woods and can’t go home. There is nowhere for them to hide and no-one they can trust. A gripping thriller.

John Connolly - Whisperers £7.99A gang of former soldiers begins a smuggling operation on the Maine/Canada border. Detective Charlie Parker discovers the contraband is more peculiar and frightening than anyone can imagine.

Non-FictionSteve Paulson – Atoms & Eden £10.99Conversations on God, Darwin and the limits of human reason between journalist Steve Paulson and many major gures in the God/Science debate.

Mike Parker – Map Addict £8.99Published in 2010 but a great read for anyone who missed it and would like to know about facts such as which area has been ocially named by the OS as the most boring square kilometre in the land and whether Milton Keynes was really built to pagan alignment.

Our favourite author seriesLee Child – Jack ReacherEx-FBI, rugged, dangerous and seemingly invincible. Fast-paced action thrillers, not high brow but very good fun. Start with Killing Floor and work your way through the series.

Donna Leon – If you like your crime ghters a little more erudite, Commissario Brunetti is your man. Alongside a love of books, food is never far from his mind and Venice is a beautiful setting. Start with Death at la Fenice and follow the twisted paths of Venetian corruption.

Literary FictionRose Tremain – Trespass £7.99Long awaited paperback edition of her most recent novel, about sibling love and devastating revenge.

Emma Donoghue – Room £7.99Booker Prize shortlisted title loosely informed by the plight of Josef Fritzl’s victims and narrated with sympathy and surprising humour by ve year old Jack who is unaware of their terrible circumstance.

Paul Solomonswhy making a will is so important

According to a recent national survey, a staggering 70% of the population die without having made a Will which accurately reects their personal and nancial circumstances. As such, if there is one prime reason to visit a

solicitor, it is to ensure that a professionally-drawn Will is properly in place to protect your family’s future.Whether you are single, married or a parent of young children, Wills are an essential part of estate planning and without one you are unable to personally control your assets after death. This can leave numerous problems for loved ones, including often costly inheritance tax liabilities and expensive disputes regarding the division of your nancial assets and even the appointment of guardians for young children.Solomons Solicitors oers you a specialised professional Will service at a xed price in the centre of Westbourne.
