In a new regular section we will be asking for your thoughts on local issues. It’s a chance to share your feedback and see what others are saying. In our rst poll we asked:

“What new shop, service or amenity would you like to see in Westbourne?”

Westbourne - Have Your Say!Find out what people think about local issues

The responses shown here are a representative selection of comments submitted by email, on our Facebook page and comments from the public. They do not represent the views of the Magazine or Bournemouth Publishing.

“Westbourne has no gardens in the shopping area so I think that the little planted area just outside of Marks & Spencers could be perhaps made a little more appealing. If the Community notice board did not have so many police/crime notices permanently on display worrying people, how about advertising a little more about local events and clubs.”

“A Holland and Barrett or a proper stationers.”

“Westbourne desparately needs to keep units available for retail business to keep a good mix in the area. The type of retail businesses that I feel we are missing are a phone shop, a stationery shop and a broader choice of fashion.”

“I think a mobile phone or technology shop would be appropriate.”

Question for the next edition:“If you were Mayor for the day, what changes would you make to the local area?”Submit your answers by email to [email protected]

“Welcome to Westbourne signs at both ends of the village and a map or news board of shops and facilities with events happening, perhaps outside the post oce or in the arcade. With such an amazing arcade and a range of specialist shops it would be lovely to highlight Westbourne's community village environment goings on, and where things are such as the library.

“Free parking for shoppers.”

Claire A.

“The Christmas market on Landseer Road was great, do that every weekend or at least once a month.”

“Diagonal parking on Poole Road would allow more cars to park and be easier to get in and out of.”

“Westbourne is pretty good as it is, lots of great stores and enough places to eat out. The only thing that annoys me is shops closing early and so few open on Sundays.”

¡No Pasarán! is an exciting new musical, with an original story, debuting this October in Bournemouth.

We met up with Roy Gaynor, the minstrel behind the story, music and lyrics of ¡No Pasarán! Roy started by briey explaining the main story, “Set during the Spanish Civil War of 1936 - 1939, it’s a story of love, friendship and selessness and the heroism of the Spanish people on both sides and of the volunteers of the International Brigades who went to Spain to ght fascism.”

After an initial idea 20 years ago, Roy has focused on the project in the last 4 years and has worked with award winning Royal College of Music graduate Doug Gould on orchestration. There are almost 40 original songs in the show which unveils the compelling story over two and a half hours. The spectacle makes use of top of the range Barco digital cinema projectors for still and video scenery projections to help the audience see, hear and feel the story unfold.

Roy explained the idea of the local premier is to invite investors and build interest with an eye on a West End production.

Rehearsals are underway but a leading man is needed to head up a great cast so are you Patrick Brady? If you are a tenor (if you are unsure about what voice you have but can sing those key songs from Les Mis really well) then you could be Patrick! Contact Roy via email on [email protected] to arrange an audition.

The October 2013 production of ¡No Pasarán! is a world premier and is directed by Margaret Coltman, a veteran of almost 100 productions in London and around the UK.

Tickets are on sale now for the premier being held at the De La Salle Theatre in Southbourne. All prots from this run are going to The Brain Tumour Charity.

Visit www.no-pasaran-musical.com to nd out more and book tickets.

Pun Classics and Summer ReadsLatest books from Kirsty Robinson at The Westbourne Bookshop

Welcome to the July/August Book Review. Let’s hope we get some better weather for the coming months as we could all do with some sunshine for getting out and about! But if you are booked up for a trip to warmer climes there’s a great selection of ction being published just in time for your summer holidays, and I’ve made a few suggestions on the opposite page.We have two special summer oers on kids’ books for the summer holidays. Pun Classics Buy One Get One Free includes children’s versions of many of our favourite classics from Alcott, Dickens, Shakespeare, Kipling and Conan Doyle plus many more.

Our Buy One Get One Free oer on selected picture books for younger children also continues into the summer holidays, and includes mixed titles such as Utterly Otterleys, Fairytale Hairdresser, Not Now Bernard and many more.

The Bournemouth Air Festival will be a big event in the summer calendar (August 29 – September 1st) so look out for our themed Window Display and please vote for us in the competition. In previous years we’ve always been Highly Commended, but are keen to win the trophy this year...

An expanded range of aviation titles will complement our usual broad range of transport books.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette? – Maria Semple Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her husband she’s his hilarious, volatile, talented and troubled wife. To fellow mothers at the school gate she’s a menace. To design experts she’s a revolutionary architect, and to 15 year old Bee she is simply, Mum. Then Bernadette disappears...I loved this very modern novel.

A Night on the Orient Express – Veronica Henry Mystery, romance and luxury combine as revelations, confessions and assignations unfold for one group of passengers aboard the infamous train on the journey from London to Venice.

The Racketeer – John Grisham When a Federal Judge fails to arrive for work on Monday morning his sta panic and call the FBI. At the crime scene are two dead bodies – the Judge and his young secretary. Someone knows who killed them and why, but he is already in jail...

Sunshine on Scotland Street (8) – Alexander McCall Smith A charming and entertaining new 44 Scotland Street novel from the bestselling author of No1 Ladies Detective Agency and Isabel Dalhousie series.

The Geneva Trap - Stella Rimington When a Russian intelligence ocer approaches MI5 with vital information about the imminent cyber- sabotage of an Anglo-American defence programme, he refuses to talk to anyone but Liz Carlyle. But who is he, and what is his connection to the British agent?

Merivel – Rose Tremain The years of the Restoration are long gone and Robert Merivel, physician and courtier to King Charles II, sets o for the French court in search of a new start. But royal life at Versailles - all glitter in front and squalor behind - leaves him in despair, until a chance encounter with seductive Madame de Flamanville allows him to dream of a dierent future.

“Everybody wants to be entertained” were the words that came from the famous lips of Mick Jagger in 1971 and entertained you shall be! Did you know, in our local area there are thriving pubs, clubs and music venues where you could catch the very next Jagger or Lennon?

My name is Aaron Gregory and I will be bringing you smack up to date with the unmissable shows and acts that are coming to the Westbourne area every month.

A key venue that has own the ag for local music in Westbourne over the years is Centre Stage in Queens Road. This is an amazing venue, which gives the audience the unique chance of seeing touring artists

and comedians in an intimate setting. In candlelit surroundings, a really beautiful and community atmosphere is

created, the music is always amazing too.

If getting up and dancing is your thing, every Wednesday night is jazz club. Jazz is making a comeback and Centre Stage is at the forefront of the revival. My not-to-be-missed show of the month is the Daryl Ford Trio at Centre Stage on the 31st July. The jazz trio comprising Daryl Ford on piano and vocals, Simon Collins on double bass and Sam Bachell on drums have become a well-known act on the local scene and are great fun.

Finally if you’re a fan of comedy and free food get to Rubyz Lounge (next door to Centre Stage) on every last Thursday of the month. It is the hidden secret of Bournemouth entertainment, high level comedians playing for free while you enjoy the food, I cannot think of a better way to spend my Thursdays.

On Thursday 13th July you can see Sticky Fingers at The Winchester. Hailing from Australia they bring a heady blend of psych surf dub garage to the UK. They are supported by 'Dirty Jerkers' and the up and coming acoustic talents of Matt McGowan.

We were delighted to visit The Conservatory Restaurant at The Riviera to sample their menu.

With views over Alum Chine and across Bournemouth Bay to the Isle of Wight, the restaurant is bright, elegant and air-conditioned. It’s all designed to create a comfortable ambiance for you to enjoy your meal, spoiler alert, which we did!

The head chef is award winning Simon Fennell, who had worked at the Montague Arms for more than 10 years. He is joined by the extremely talented David Dunn who worked at The Edge.

We were seated by the window and were treated to a cloudless sky and sea views. After choosing the well rounded Cambio Chilean Merlot (£15.95 a bottle) we had a good look through the set menu. The tempting selection had a good range but the style is denitely ‘Classic British’. We nally decided on starters of assiette of beetroot served with crumbed brie bites and a generous ham hock terrine. Both starters were completely gorgeous and portioned to a perfect size to leave you ready for the main course.

The choices of main were solid and we picked the salmon with sweet potato mash and steak with triple fried chips. Both mains were served with a side dish of vegetables and all tasted wonderful, the steak cooked to order and again well portioned.

After a pause to work on the bottle of Cambio, we had another tough decision, which desserts to try. Two of our favourites were the winners, Eton Mess and Dorset apple cake. The Eton Mess was so beautiful on the plate it’s ‘mess’ credentials may have been undermined, but it was a real treat on the tongue! The Dorset apple cake was wonderfully moist and served with crème anglaise, here the portion could have been slightly larger but my waistline was glad it wasn’t.

At a very reasonable set price of £25 for 3 courses we can denitely recommend visiting the Riviera this summer.
