8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 8 Here Comes Tesco!We talk to Melanie Chiswell from Tesco

It was one of Westbourne’s worst kept secrets but we can now ocially reveal that a Tesco store is going to open in the old Methodist church. To get the most up to date and accurate facts, we spoke to Melanie Chiswell, Corporate Aairs Manager for Tesco. Donning a hard hat and fetching high-vis vest, we also went inside the church to get some exclusive photos of the building work going on.

What type of Tesco store will this be and what does that mean? The Westbourne store will be a Tesco Express. Express stores are neighbourhood convenience shops, stocking mainly food and essential household items.

When is the new store due to open?Building work is still in the early stages but the store is due to open in July 2010, subject to some outstanding planning issues.

What services will the store have? There will be a bake-o providing fresh bakery products such as rolls and croissants. There will be an ATM cash machine, over the counter medicines, a range of alcohol and magazines.

How many people will the new store employ? There will be a mix of full & part time sta, totalling around 25. Look out for recruitment advertising nearer the opening date.

What will the opening hours be?The store will open 7am until 11pm, 7 days a week, subject to planning consent.

What changes are being made to the building? The structure of the building is being refurbished by an external developer and as little as possible is being changed. The stained glass windows, stonework and marble columns will all be preserved. Tesco Express will be on the ground oor. It is likely there will be a cafe/restaurant on the second oor but this is being developed separately from Tesco. There will be external Tesco Express signage added to the building, sympathetic to the architecture. The main entrance (opposite Blockbuster) will be maintained and a new door will be added where there is a large plain window on the Poole Road frontage.

Tesco in WestbourneWe talk to Melanie Chiswell from Tesco

There have been reports from other areas where a smaller Tesco store has opened of trac problems and local disruption from large delivery lorries. What steps have been taken to minimise these issues for the Westbourne store?Express stores have a maximum of 3 to 5 deliveries a day so we don't anticipate trac issues. A delivery system will form part of the negotiations with the planners going forward.

Will Tesco be participating in the Westbourne parking refund scheme (spend £20 or more and get £1 back)? It is unlikely Tesco Express in Westbourne will be able to participate in this scheme. It would set a precedent for our other stores that Tesco wouldn’t be able to commit to. The nearest pay and display car park is Landseer Road car park.

Will Tesco be joining the Westbourne Traders Association?Yes, we’re happy to join.

How will Tesco support the local community? Two community funds of £500 will be donated to local good causes on our opening, more details of these will be published nearer the opening date.

How will prices compare to the Tesco Branksome?Prices in Tesco Express stores are slightly higher than other Tesco stores. This is for a number of reasons, mainly due to higher rates & rent and dierent stang costs.

This area will be restored uponcompletion

Local ReactionWhat effect will Tesco have on Westbourne?

We spoke to local residents and traders to nd out what they thought about Tesco coming to Westbourne.

Have YourSay!

“It will be handy to havea cheaper alternative to M&S

in Westbourne. I am trying to save

for a mortgage so every pennyhelps. The bad side is if too

many multinationals come intoWestbourne and spoil it.”David Edmunds, local resident

“Westbourne is best

for independent

shops. I don’t see

the need for a Tesco.”

Jackie, The Fair Trader

“Anything that brings more

people into Westbourne is a

good thing. However with a

Tesco at Branksome and one in

The Triangle, another

one in Westbourne might

just be overkill.”

Karen, The Natural Larder

“I am glad Tesco is opening. It means I will come into Westbourne more often rather than go to out of town supermarkets.”Brian Jenkins, local resident

“Tesco come tosmall towns and kill smalltraders. I think we’ll seesome shops close down.I don’t think we need aTesco in Westbourne.”

Somer, Ottomania

“It will be handy to havea cheaper alternative to M&S

in Westbourne. I am trying to save

for a mortgage so every pennyhelps. The bad side is if too

many multinationals come intoWestbourne and spoil it.”David Edmunds, local resident

“Westbourne is best

for independent

shops. I don’t see

the need for a Tesco.”

Jackie, The Fair Trader

“Anything that brings more

people into Westbourne is a

good thing. However with a

Tesco at Branksome and one in

The Triangle, another

one in Westbourne might

just be overkill.”

Karen, The Natural Larder

“I am glad Tesco is opening. It means I will come into Westbourne more often rather than go to out of town supermarkets.”Brian Jenkins, local resident

“Tesco come tosmall towns and kill smalltraders. I think we’ll seesome shops close down.I don’t think we need aTesco in Westbourne.”

Kirsty Robinson owner of the Westbourne Bookshop

Welcome to the May Book Review – there’s so much going on this month I can hardly decide what to include.

Obviously we’re all gripped with election fever and our window shows some of the highlights from the enormous range of political books available at the moment. Westbourne Bookshop will denitely not be declaring any political allegiance but we have selected some titles that we think our customers may appreciate. We can also order in Party Manifestos for the undecided.

• Richard Littlejohn Littlejohn’s House of Fun - £12.99 • Vince Cable The Storm - £8.99 • Martin Bell A Very British Revolution - £8.99 • Andrew Rawnsley The End of the Party - £25.00 • Julia Jeries What Are They Doing In There? - £10.00

The BBC Proms Guide has also been published recently at £6 and is invaluable for booking tickets and planning your summer TV schedule. Don’t forget we sell NAXOS CDs if you can’t wait until July to listen to your favourite classical pieces.

The cricket season has started very early this year and the Playfair Cricket Annual 2010 is an ideal pocket sized reference for all those armchair sledgers out there.Westbourne Bookshop Price: £6.99

This book traces the development of Bournemouth’s Hotels beginning with the founding of the Royal Bath and the popularity of the resort with the auent gentry and invalids seeking out its healthy pine scented air. Full of photographs of long since lost and converted hotels with particular local interest in the East Anglia Hotel and Crag Hall.

Despite running my own business, I have to admit that I am not in possession of a naturally mathematical brain, so imagine my surprise when I heard Alex Bellos on Radio 4 talking about his maths book and found myself eager to read it. Now I can’t put it down and have a maths story for every occasion. I will be taking it with me on my previously mentioned weekend breaks!

Alex BellosAlex’s Adventures in NumberlandWestbourne Bookshop Price £18.99

Beautifully illustrated books featuring a year’s worth of ideas for wonderful weekend breaks – and what to eat while you’re there. Although we’re spoilt by

living in the most beautiful place in the world, if you nd me absent from the shop, I may be down in Cornwall sampling ideas from either of these books.

Open Door Project

Westbourne is once again in the news as the trial of those accused of murdering Ralph Millward continues. Ralph’s tragic death in May 2009 highlighted that people who sleep rough are very vulnerable. Exposure to all kinds of weather, diculties in accessing health care, and the risk of verbal or physical abuse lead to the average life span of a homeless person being signicantly lower than the rest of the population.

West Cli Baptist Church, in partnership with various other agencies, help people like Ralph to get o the streets. This month marks the 6th anniversary of this ministry

through which the church has served in excess of 12,000 cooked breakfasts as well as oering other practical help including advice from Homeless Outreach Workers. The church’s goal is to spend time with those living rough or vulnerably housed in order to build the necessary trust to help them get into suitable accommodation. It might seem that this is just about directing them to the various types of accommodation available but experience shows that more often it is about breaking down the barriers of suspicion that prevent a homeless person getting the help they need. It often takes weeks or even months of chatting over a meal before a rough sleeper will consider more substantial forms of help such as supported housing, rehabilitation programmes, restoring lost contact with their families, etc.

Tony Morgan, Project Leader

To nd out more about the project or to make a practical or nancial contribution towards the project please contact the church oce on 01202 767070 or e-mail: info@westclibaptistchurch.org.uk
