From The General Manager Matt Selby

Remembering our Friend BruceBoore of Hattie’s Cafe and Beanery

This isn’t an easy editorial piece. The community has lost a great man,and like so many of you whose livesBruce has impacted, we’ve lost afriend. Not long after hearing aboutHattie’s Cafe and Beanery closing itsdoors due to Bruce’s medical issues,Bruce Boore tragically passed awayafter a long, hard fight. Bruce had beenbattling Crohn’s disease, and over theyears I’ve known him there were a fewtimes flare ups sidelined him for a shorttime; but he would always be back towork not long after with a big smile onhis face as if nothing was wrong. Henever let anyone know how bad it re-ally was because he wasn’t the type ofguy that needed anyone to feel sorryfor him. When we heard Hattie’s wasshutting down due to Bruce’s health Iknew it must be worse than normal, but I am still in shock that he’s actuallygone. I honestly thought he was goingto surprise us all and beat any health is-sues plaguing him and re-open thecafe. He was, and always will be, a spe-

cial man to so many people whose liveshe became a part of.

I first met Bruce in February2013. I walked into Hattie’s Beanerylooking for the owner so I could tellthem all about my new publication Iwas starting in the Carrollwood area.He was gracious enough to listen tomy pitch and give me feedback onwhat he thought. He wasn’t con-vinced that people from Carrollwoodwould drive past other cafes in the areato come visit him. I understood his

concerns and simply asked him tothink about it and give me a chance.About 5 pm the same day Bruce calledme back and said he wouldn’t mindgiving me a shot for one month to seehow it goes. Even though it wasn’t along term contract, Bruce was the firstbusiness to believe in me by signing upto advertise, and it really meant a lot.Fast forward to December 2015 -Bruce never missed an issue since hestarted! He loved our magazine, andwas a major reason our publicationgrew over the past few years, becausehe was always telling other local busi-nesses about his great experience withus. I’ll always be grateful for his kind-ness and regret never getting thechance to tell him how much it meantto me that he gave me a chance beforeanyone else did.

We will never forget you Bruce.Thank you for providing this commu-nity with your wonderful soul and pas-sion for some of the best coffee anddelicious food this town has ever seen.

Realtor Gigi Gauthier is Truly “Dog’s Best Friend”By Deborah Bostock-Kelley

When you buy or sell a homeunder the guidance of Charles Ruten-berg Realtor Gigi Gauthier, you aregetting 17 years of experience workingwith new home sales, short sales, bankowned properties, buyers, sellers andinvestors – a woman who loves help-ing her clients and making their expe-rience a stress-free process.

“I love helping people find theirperfect home and meeting new peo-ple,” she explained. “I am knowledge-able on many different areas of realestate, not just one specific area.”

With excellent interest rates avail-able to buyers, Gigi helps clients ma-neuver through the process and leadsthem in the proper direction. With abackground in new home construc-tion, she will thoroughly and objec-tively evaluate your home’s conditionand features to properly assess how itcompetes in the current market; shewill also give tips and ideas aboutstaging your home to show its maxi-mum potential.

She covers mostly residential salesin the Tampa Bay Area, favoringWestchase and surrounding communi-ties - an area that she has lived in for17 years.

What you may not know is thatwith every home bought or sold, youare helping save the lives of dogs andcats rescued by her local nonprofitanimal rescue. Gigi donates $500 toPaw Print Hearts, her 501c3 cat anddog rescue.

Gigi founded her charity organi-zation after witnessing firsthand as avolunteer how many dogs were eutha-nized in the Pet Resource Center, for-merly Hillsborough County AnimalShelter. She decided not only to bethe resource for families looking tofind their perfect home, but providehomes for euthanasia listed dogs and

cats that were in need of a miracle.“From every home that I sell on

either the buyer’s or seller’s side I willdonate $500.00 to the rescue. Thatwill go towards paying boarding feesor vet bills for dogs that would haveotherwise been euthanized by ourcounty shelter; instead we give thema second chance at finding their for-ever home.”

The About Us section of PawPrint Hearts explains exactly why thisvery busy full-time realtor opened herheart to four-legged customers. “Afterwatching great dogs die in high killshelters, I decided to do somethingabout it by partnering with out ofstate shelters who have space to takeour dogs and find them their foreverhomes, or search for local homes forthose that cannot go on transport byholding weekly adoption events.”

An advocate for those that can’tspeak, Gigi’s Paw Print Hearts hassaved the lives of approximately 740dogs and 90 cats since its inceptionin 2014.

“We rescue all breed dogs. Themajority of the dogs being eutha-nized every day at county shelters arepit bulls.”

Gigi stressed that proper spayingand neutering by responsible ownerswould significantly lower the animalshelter population, especially for thelarger breeds with poor, often un-founded, reputations like the pit bulls.

She says, “Statistics show that 1in 600 make it out alive from countyshelters, but people continue tobreed their dogs and not spay orneuter them.”

Gigi currently has 1 cat and 30dogs seeking their forever homes. Ifadopting is not possible, Paw PrintHearts seeks volunteers that can opentheir home for fostering the rescues.

Gigi holds fundraising events totry to raise money and is always look-

ing for corporate sponsors or eventlocations that can help. She recom-mends checking her Facebook pageand the website for upcomingfundraisers for her rescue.

In addition, the nonprofit can useassistance in several other areas. Thefunds are used for transportation, boarding, vetting, medical treatment, and food for the animals that Gigi hassaved, and for the future rescues.

Anyone interested in volunteer-ing, fostering, or adopting an animalcan apply directly on the Paw PrintHearts website.

“We need donations, companysponsors for our dogs or people inter-ested in holding fundraising events.Volunteers are always needed, as wellas foster homes for our animals,” Gigiexplained. “Our mission is to rescue. Our dream is that some day we won’thave to.”

For more information aboutPaw Print Hearts, to make a dona-tion, volunteer, foster or rescue adog or cat, visit their web pagewww.PawPrintHearts.com or Face-book at www.Facebook.com/Paw-PrintHearts.

Florida Orthopaedic Institute’s Sports Medicine TeamSubmitted

Will Smith’s latest film “Concus-sions” brought a serious problem tolight for professional athletes, butwhat happens when your son ordaughter experiences a head injury?

For Austin Hubbard “Concus-sions” was a real-life experience.During a Plant High School baseballgame, the 17-year-old collided withanother player in the outfield andwas seriously injured. As the otherplayer raced to catch the ball, hismouth hit Austin’s jaw and Austin’sface was badly torn up. Not only didAustin need surgery and stitches torepair his jaw, but he also sustained asevere concussion.

A neurologist recommendedthat Austin and his family see Dr.Westerfield, a concussion expert andsports medicine physician fromFlorida Orthopaedic Institute.Austin was seen immediately andbegan his evaluation and treatmentfor his concussion symptoms.

Using new computer software,ImPACT, Dr. Westerfield testedAustin’s memory, attention span, brainprocessing speed and reaction time tomeasure his post-injury symptoms anddiagnose him properly.

“Unlike most orthopedic in-juries, you cannot always see the dam-age that has been done to the brainusing an X-ray or CT scan,” says Dr.Westerfield. “Doctors who are certi-fied in ImPACT can evaluate the ex-

tent of the injury and we also can cre-ate a customized treatment plan forthe individual.”

ImPACT can help answer diffi-cult questions about an athlete's readi-ness to return to play, protecting themfrom the serious consequences of re-turning too soon, which helpedAustin’s mother feel better about hisreturn to baseball. While traditionalneurological and radiologic proce-dures such as CT, MRI and EEG arehelpful in identifying many seriousconcerns such as skull fractures, hematoma and contusions, they arenot as useful in identifying the effectsof concussion.

“The ImPACT testing made memore comfortable and open to send-ing Austin back into the game onlywhen I knew for sure that he wasready,” says Mrs. Hubbard. “I also ap-preciated Dr. Westerfield’s concernand patience with Austin. He an-swered all my questions and made surethat Austin did not get back onto thefield before he was ready.”

Submitted in 17 local schools, and they provide a physician on thesidelines at all high school games. Thisway, student athletes receive the samequality of care as the professional ath-letes that they aspire to be.

Common signs and symptoms ofconcussions include: headache, tem-porary loss of consciousness, confu-sion, dizziness, nausea, fatigue andsensitivity to light and noise.

Dr. Westerfield notes, “If you or

someone you know experiencesthese symptoms after headtrauma, the best chance for a saferecovery is to take them to a con-cussion specialist, and if availablein your area, an orthopedic ur-gent care facility is best.”

Florida Orthopaedic Insti-tute’s urgent care centers (lo-cated in Citrus Park and SouthTampa) provide the communitywith highly trained orthopedicphysicians for emergency care. This way, if injury occurs, pa-tients can avoid long lines atemergency rooms and see a doc-tor with expertise in orthope-dics, sports medicine andconcussions.

“I feel better knowing moreabout concussions because of thisexperience. I know more now soI can better protect myself andrecognize the symptoms in my-self and my teammates, and now Iknow where to go for help too,” saidAustin.

Throughout the 7 hours that shewas held captive, Ashley, who hadbeen desperately trying to get her lifeback in order, talked to Brian abouther life and her daughter and read apassage from the Bible and The Pur-pose Driven Life to him. Ashleyhelped Brian consider how God coulduse him if he turned himself in and thefollowing morning he did so.

On Sunday morning, April 24, at10:30 Ashley will share the amazingstory of how God changed not justone life but two that fateful evening.

“Ashley’s story illustrates fourspiritual truths that give us hope andencouragement for those difficulttimes in our lives,” says Pastor and Au-thor Rick Warren. “First, no matterwhat bad decisions you’ve made, youdon’t have to stay stuck in your past.Your past is past, and it’s never toolate to start over. Second, God’s pur-pose for your life is greater than any

problems you’re going through.Third, the Bible really changes people. And finally, the fourth truth is thatGod has the power to help you overany addiction.”

The members of Grace and FaithChurch have seen first-hand examplesof God’s miraculous work. Located at12749 W. Hillsborough Avenue,Grace and Faith Church brings speak-ers to the Tampa church to tell of theirencounters with God and the miraclesthat he has bestowed upon them. Youdon’t have to be a member of thechurch to come to one of their specialspeaker series, and Pastor Robert Scar-allo would like to invite you to comeexperience the amazing power ofgrace and faith.

Miraculously Healed, March 20,10:30 a.m.

In 1997 Dr. Tom Renfro, a well-respected physician in Norton, Va.,was diagnosed with the rarest form oflymphoma. By the time Tom receivedhis diagnosis he was already in the finalstage of the cancer and doctors toldhim and his family that he would notlive and there was not anything theycould do to help him. Over the nextyear, Tom’s cancer started overtakinghis body, but his faith in God and thepower of prayer never ceased. Monthsafter he was diagnosed, tumors werevisible all over his body and bloodclots had begun targeting his majororgans. Tom turned to the congrega-tion at his church, his patients, and re-ligious groups such as The 700 Clubto help him pray. And after 40 daysand 40 nights of prayer, a miracle hap-pened. In an attempt to extend Tom’slife so he could spend Christmas withhis family, doctors administered onedose of chemotherapy and the tumorsbegan to instantly disappear.

“Occasionally, you see things thatyou don’t have a good explanation

for,” says Dr. Woodley, one of Tom’sdoctors. “This first round ofchemotherapy, we were seeing re-sponses in hours, where these lymphnodes were shrinking. I have neverseen a response like this before. It wasa rather dramatic experience.”

Nineteen years later, Dr. TomRenfro is still cancer free. He’ll besharing his miraculous story about theamazing healing powers of God’s lovethe morning of March 20 at 10:30 atGrace and Faith Church.

“As humans, we are fascinatedwith stories,” says Pastor Robert.“Our church is filled with people withstories. Everyone has their own crisisbut you can be healed.”

Being Kidnapped Saved Her Life,April 24, 10:30 a.m.

In 2005, Ashley Smith’s life wasin shambles. She was addicted tomethamphetamines, had given up cus-tody of her daughter to an aunt, andwas living by herself in a small apart-ment when Brian Nichols shot himselfout of custody, killing at least onedeputy, a court employee, as well asthe sitting judge, and an off-duty fed-eral Agent he carjacked, before home-invading Ashley and taking herhostage. A major news event in At-lanta, this event was also the basis forthe motion picture “Captive”, whichwas produced by Paramount Picturesand recently released to theaters in2015.

Ashley decided that night to stopusing drugs forever, “I was forcedwith the decision of whether or not Iwas going to use drugs with BrianNichols that night. Drugs had been away of life that I had let consume mefor many years before that and I had achoice - whether I was going to use

church will also be hosting a morninginterview, followed by a 5 p.m. semi-nar with Dr. Caroline Leaf, one of theworld’s modern pioneers of neuroplas-ticity, a scientific discovery that coun-ters the former thinking that thehuman brain cannot rejuvenate itself, but rather responds with new brain

neuron regeneration to both positiveand negative stimuli that we can sig-nificantly control! Dr Leaf authoredthe book "Switch Your Brain On,"and the afternoon seminar is entitled"Detoxing Your Brain." A $20 regis-tration fee is requested for participa-tion at the afternoon seminar, whichcan be paid at the door.

Pastor Robert and his family havetheir own first-hand experience withmiracles. He says, “When my grand-daughter was born prematurely, wewere told she would be dead in themorning because her body was notproducing oxygen. For more than 2hours the machines she was hooked

up to could not find any oxygen in herblood at all. She was taken out of herincubator to give us the chance tohold her and say, ‘Goodbye.’ After 14hours of intense prayer, all of her vitalscame up. Today she is a happy, healthy, normal 2 year old. Accordingto her doctors and nurses it was a mir-acle that she not only lived but did notsuffer any brain damage.”

The Pastor adds, “We see a lot ofmiracles in our church. God loves usand He wants to intervene in our lives. When you believe in miracles, you willbegin to see them in your everyday

life. The bottom line of every storyabout a miracle is God cares, Godhears, and God acts out of love.”
