Welcome to the 23rd edition of our annual bull sale! The cattle producers are embarking on exciting times once again in the Canadian Cattle industry. High prices arebeing set for feeder cattle across the board. Limousin calves set a record price week one of February with 202.50/100lbs, 650 lbs calves - $1316.00 for 88 head. Congrats to the Barclay family! Those are the pay days of the past once again bestowed on us, displaying that the industry demand for yield and feed effi ciency are back. Limousin cattle have the ability to do naturally what the industry is needing to enhance other breeds of cattle to accomplish - muscle, yield and feed effi ciency. The past 4 months have been a blessing for beef cattle producers cumulatively, purebred and commer-cial producers that has been a long time coming to say the least. We at Jaymarandy have remained strong and progressive throughout this with the development of Jaymarandy Livestock a “micro” boxed beef sales program which has offered retail butchered products in the city of Winnipeg. The product is in high demand as it offers consumers regardless of their eco-nomic situation or family dynamics a natural, healthy, nutritious beef product that is locally produced, giving new age con-sumers a “face to a name” they desire. Being a conception to consumption producer is incredibly eye opening, informative and highly gratifying. Amidst this process we have continued to produce docile, calving ease cattle with sound structure, fl uid locomotion, high quality udders on females and large scrotal on males.We have always and will always continue to produce high yielding, moderate framed, large volume and balanced bodied cattle. Once again we were blessed in 2013 with show cattle success due to the work ethic, diligence a demanding selection of our entire family. Angus and Jules deserve special mention as they truly do live and inspire our show family/beef production dream. The show ring is not our only focus, however, it is defi nitely a useful tool that we utilize for promotion. Nutrition:Firstly, no calves at Jaymarandy receive creep feed. All bulls are pail fed a DDG pellet, complete with vitamin and mineral and 14% protein ration to optimize growth not maximize growth. This is done to offer our customers the soundest possible bull available with emphasis on longevity and soundness of your bull’s future. 2 year old bulls and late spring carry over bulls for next year’s offering (this year’s 2 year olds included) are fed a similarly diet, however they are fed for approxi-mately 2.75 lbs/day growth. Then the bulls are pastured from June 1 to October 15, in order to maximize the bull’s ability to forage and grow on grass. This provides you with an athletic, sound bull that will thrive on pasture while breeding and minimize the fat bull meltdown.

Deanne and I are pleased to be consigners in this eventalong with such reputable breeders as Jaymarandy Limousin and Maple Grove Gelbvieh. A shout out goes to the Angus family for getting the ball rolling on this event, leading to this new sale in Manitoba’s cattle capital. We alsohave a hug thank-you to the Cleave family for allowing us to utilize their OchreRiver feedlot to develop the bulls on offer today, to K Bar Livestock for providing pen space for our show string cattle the past 2 falls, to Rene Tardiff for helping haul cattle to and from pasture and sorting on numerous occasions,and to countless others who helped us get to where we are today.

Deanne and I feel that we have a very strong set of bulls on offer for this sale. Although our purebred Gelbvieh herd is not large in numbers, we set our standards incredibly high for seeking genetics that we desire, creating functional cattle that will perform in any environment that they are exposed to. Our focus is to create a cow that is moderate in stature, easy doing female that is still loaded with thickness, high fertility, excellent udder quality, and with milk productionto bring back those big soggy calves that everyone loves to see. We feel these bulls exemplify our cowherd as you will see stout individuals moderate at birth, high performance at weaning with tons of barrel and testicle, as well as a good foot foundation under all of them.

The bulls on offer are April/May born, virgin, coming 2 year old individuals. These are not leftover bulls; we have sim-ply designed our program around a later calving date with the bulls being grassed over their yearling summer to set a good foundation. This program allows us to develop our bulls at a gradual pace on a pale fed pellet ration formulated by EastMan Feeds, creating sound individuals that will cover more cows and are more apt to handle the tough country in central Manitoba. As a result we feel we are able to serve our bull customers’ needs more effectively.

His sire SLC Touchdown 82W was the high selling bull at Severtson Land and Cattle’s sale in 2012 and his dam SLC Anita 122R has been moved into our donor program. Brett Favre and his dam were Senior Cow/Calf Champion at the Canadian Na-tional Gelbvieh Show at Agribition in 2012 and we sold a right to fl ush his dam for $3000 at the Agribition sale. Prior to the show ring success, we sold ½ interest in OSF 14Z’s dam for $10,000 in the spring of 2012. OSF 14Z’s moderate birth weight and smooth structure allowed us to comfortably use him on all our heifers in 2013 and are excited to see his calves perform. Selling ½ interest and ½ possession.

The longest bodied bull on offer, OSF 11Z will add pounds to calves he sires by “adding another leaf to the kitchen table”. OSF 11Z was also the heaviest bull at weaning of the bulls on offer from us. His dam originated from Maple Grove Gelbvieh and has been an awesome producer over the years. I tell lots of cattlemen “if a cow can thrive in the Interlake, she can thrive anywhere” and OSF 11Z’s dam speaks for herself by thriving in our program. Case in point, she raised a full brother to 11Z who was shown in our Mani-toba Livestock Expo string this fall. OSF 11Z is another example of the consistent quality that SLC 512T sires.

A typical dark red SLC 512T son; moderate framed, built like a tank while being smooth made throughout, and eye appeal to spare. His dam, purchased from Severtson Land and Cattle, Innisfail, AB, is becoming a pure bull maker with a full brother selling to the Hop family, Tolstoi, MB last year and has another outstanding full brother in the bull pen that will be available next year. Even after raising big soggy bull calves year after year, OSF 3Z’s dam is still due to calve at the very beginning of the calving season; a mark of excellent fertility.

Great heifer bull prospect. Take a look at this guy’s birth weight and notice he is out of a fi rst calf heifer and you will fi nd incredible calving ease. Also at weaning time, his weight was 77% of his dam’s weight when she followed right behind him over the scale; not many heifers can boast this type of weaning percentage at 205 days. His sire is currently the main heifer bull at Foggy Mountain Farms, Mountain Road, MB and we purchased his dam from Maple Grove Gelbvieh at the Agribition sale. A maternal sister to OSF 2Z was 2nd in class at Manitoba Livestock Expo this fall and was also part of our Agribition show string.

Here is a percentage bull that really exemplifi es how Gelb-vieh thrives as an option in a crossbreeding system. His dam is 50% Gelbvieh and 50% Angus so if a person is curious about what to expect from a Gelbvieh/Angus cross OSF 8Z is a prime example as well as his full sister that is in our heifer calf pen. A cherry red SLC 512T son that puts it all together out of a dam that turns heads. Sells as a 50% bull due to no offi cial documentation on dam.

Don’t discount this guy just because of his lighter colour, for he is packed full of muscle and a pedigree behind him. His full brother OSF Swaggerville 3Y was a division winner at Agribition in 2011 and had the highest Weight per Day of Age of all Gelbvieh bull calves shown that year. OSF 16Z also has a full sister that is a standout in our heifer calf pen and will be a valuable addition to our female base. If a pro-ducer has a portion of tan cows and wants to produce high quality buckskin calves that Myles Masson loves to see, then OSF 16Z is the bull for the job.
