“Power Up Your Tiger Pride!

Dear Tiger Families,

Many of you have expressed concern following the tragedy on February 14th at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, and I share your concern and sorrow. I want to assure you that in our school and across the district, we make every effort to keep our students safe. We have security plans in place that are specific to our school, we review safety procedures with students and staff, and we work closely with local law enforcement.

Many times when incidents like this happen, people close to those responsible knew something was wrong ahead of time. We want to encourage all of our students to tell an adult if they see something wrong. You can call or text Crimestoppers and report information anonymously if you wish. (insert appropriate numbers below). We have also provided tips on helping children cope with tragedy on the district website. Our school counselors are also available to help.

Greensboro/Guilford County Crimestoppers: To submit a tip by phone call: 336-373-1000 To text your tip dial 274637, beginning your message with keyword badboyz High Point Crimestoppers: By Phone: Call 336-889-4000 By Text: text KEYWORD: CASHTIPS along with your tip to 274637. Spring is finally around the corner. As the warmer weather approaches, we will continue to conduct safety drills (lockdown, fire drills, tornado) through the spring. We successfully conducted our first fire drill in our new facility in February. Following the lockdown drills we will notify you directly by connect-ed. Thank you for continuing to follow safety procedures!

We Have Moved! On Tuesday, February 20, 2018, our students and staff moved into our beautiful new facility. Anticipation mounted as the students exited the buses and cars and entered the building for the very first time. It was an exciting day as the students were welcomed by the Western Guilford High School Drumline, representatives from the Building Advisory Team, faculty and staff and local television stations. Principal Brown and the Administrative Staff held a brief assembly in the incredible new gym. Following the assembly students remained with homeroom teachers and spent the morning touring the new building, finding their classes, the cafeteria, the gym and the music department. Thank you for your patience and support as we have begun instruction in our new building. As a reminder, all traffic now enters campus on the Guilford College Rd. Side. All students enter the car rider entrance from 7:30-8:10. After 8:10, all students must enter the main entrance, which is found by following the sidewalk on the left side of the building as you enter campus. All adult visitors may only enter the building through the main entrance. One of the great features of our new building is increased security. This includes the fob and camera systems which are now fully in place allowing Administrative Staff to monitor the entire building and grounds as needed. Parents and Visitors, we thank you for your patience as we are getting settled in the new building and becoming accustomed to our new and enhanced security. As a reminder, all visitors to the school must enter the campus at 401 College Road and enter the building through the Main Entrance. The Main Entrance is accessible from the Visitor/Staff Parking by the sidewalk to left. Please do not enter from any of the side doors. We look forward to having you visit our new facility on Saturday, March 10, 2018 when we will host a two hour tour of the building from 10:00 am-12:00 noon. Parking will be on the College Road side.

Enjoy the pictures from our first day on the next page.

IT’S FLU SEASON

As we move forward with the second half of the school year, please keep in mind that we are still

in the flu season. During the winter months, whether at school, home or in the community, we are

often in contained, closed areas and in close contact with others. It is extremely important for us

to practice good hygiene/germ protocol to help prevent the spread of the flu or other illness. What

does this mean? It means:

COVER YOUR MOUTH AND NOSE when you are sneezing, coughing, or blowing your

nose.

• WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER or alcohol-based sanitizer (when soap

and water are not available).

• CALL YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER if you are not feeling well or have any questions

about your health.

• STAY AT HOME FEVER-FREE WITHOUT MEDICATION for 24 HOURS BEFORE

RETURNING TO SCHOOL OR WORK if you get the flu or have symptoms of the flu.

• AVOID CLOSE CONTACT WITH OTHERS while you are sick.

• STAY HYDRATED WITH WATER (drink plenty of fluids).

You can contact the health department, pharmacy or your health care provider to schedule a

time to get the flu shot. Remember, a key message is to distance yourself from others who are

visibly sick and stay at home if you have symptoms of the flu.

We Need You!

End-of-Grade Testing will be conducted during the last 10 days of this school

year. We need proctors for all of our test sites. There

will be a short Training session for Proctors

(approx. 30 minutes) during the month of May. If you

can volunteer 1, 2 or more days for proctoring please contact Mrs. Holli Draper,

WGMS Counseling Office, at (336)316-5833.

SMOD Free Days

SMOD Free Days are a privilege

that students can enjoy by earning Leader Chips. Students are not permitted to “borrow”

Leader Chips from other students in order to have the

required 7. Each student must earn the Chips on their own.

There are specific guidelines for SMOD Free Days. The SMOD Free

Day Guidelines are included in this newsletter in a later article.
