Commencement Convocation Friday, the Thirteenth of December

Mr. James R. Smith

James R. Smith, ’53, ’56, attended what was New Mexico State Teachers’ College in 1949 and became Western New Mexico University during his freshman year. The Indiana native was on the Mustang basketball, football, tennis and track teams and became the first four-sport letterman in a single year at WNMU. He married Martha Wellborn in 1952, served as student body president his senior year, and took a job in Indiana after graduation, moving permanently to New Mexico the following year. After two years of coaching basketball in Lordsburg, Smith was called back to WNMU and made history by becoming the youngest four-year college basketball coach in the nation. With him coaching, the Mustangs defeated both UNM and U of A, also claiming victory over NMSU five times in a row. Eventually, Smith assumed responsibility over WNMU housing operations and put students in charge of the residence halls. Around then, he assisted students in founding the institution’s premier tradition, Great Race, which is going on its 53rd year. Smith prided himself on hosting student-only luncheons for politicians, celebrities, and even astronaut Harrison Hagan “Jack” Schmitt. When he was appointed Dean of Students, Smith gave up his coaching job but took on many other roles, teaching at the university all along. He retired from WNMU in 1984. Smith briefly entered the insurance business then took over Scott Park Golf Course, becoming a Class A then a lifetime member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America. He organized the Billy Casper Invitation, which provided funds that helped furnish the Gila Regional Medical Center’s Billy Casper Wellness Center and add an ambulance to the community. Smith is active with the WNMU Alumni Association today and will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from WNMU during the fall 2019 commencement ceremony. .

Academic Regalia

Academic Regalia date back to the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Scholars were members of religious orders, then guilds. The university was a guild of Masters of Arts, where the Bachelor was an apprentice to the Master. The first known statute governing academic dress appeared in 1321 at the University of Coimbra (Italy); in the United States the practice goes back to 1754 when King George II transplanted many regulations from Oxford and Cambridge to the newly chartered King’s College (now Columbia University).

The principal features of the academic regalia are the cap, gown and hood. The bachelor’s gown is distinguished by long pointed sleeves and is worn closed, while the master’s gown, which may be worn open or closed, has a long closed sleeve from which the forearm emerges through the slit near the elbow. The doctor’s gown is faced with broad velvet panels and has full round sleeves, which bear three velvet bars. The square cap originated at Oxford in the sixteenth century and is the same for all degrees, with the tassel in black or in the color of the field of study; doctors are privileged to wear gold tassels.

Originally the hood was a tippet, a shoulder covering worn by medieval friars, which, during the fourteenth century, came to be used to cover the head. When caps were adopted in the fifteenth century, hoods became ornamental and were draped over the shoulders and down the back. Today, the length of the hood and the width of the velvet border that edges it vary with the degree, while the color of the border represents the field of learning.
