Science at WRa

Western Reserve Academy’s science faculty engages and challenges students, both in and out of the classroom.Classes are interactive and inclusive, and we know our students well. During the afternoon or evening studyhours, teachers and students work together addressing questions and developing a thorough understanding ofcourse material. This relationship fosters a rapport that leads to a rewarding and productive learning experience.

Wilson Hall is home to the sciences at WRA, offering state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories. Laying thegroundwork for future study and building an in-depth foundation in life and physical sciences, WRA’s curriculum emphasizes the exploration of science as an exciting process of inquiry through hands-on experience. Rigor, discovery, observation, critical analysis and a sense of responsible application mark the study of science at WRA.

The department’s aim is to give students a thorough science background, leaving them well prepared to choosean area of specialization in college and beyond. Courses are available to students of wide-ranging ability and atevery grade level. Each course contains a certain core of factual information, but the emphasis is on science asa process of inquiry, facilitated by laboratory experience. The department believes the goal of science instructionat the secondary level should be the development of positive attitudes and interests related to science, anunderstanding of basic concepts, and skill in critical analysis and sequential reasoning.

The department offers both introductory and advanced full-credit courses in biology, physics and chemistry.The higher-level courses are designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement examinations of the CEEB. In addition, half-credit special interest courses such as Biotechnology, Cancer Immunology and Astronomy, are available for enrichment.

Students also benefit from specialized partnerships with corporations and organizations to learn practicalapplications to their research and studies. Several students are selected each year to participate in the CaseWestern Reserve University Genetic Research Program as well as the Heidelberg International SummerResearch Program.

Our TEAMS (Tests of Engineering, Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) groups are top-ranked in the state and nationally. Our new Science Olympiad team is qualified for state level competition.

Western Reserve Academy is currently seeking an experienced, dynamic and collaborative educator who ispassionate about teaching biology and its applications. Candidates should have the ability to inspire students and colleagues and be willing to embrace and participate in all that is associated with a vibrant boarding school community.

The ideal candidate possesses most or all of the following qualifications:

• Minimum of five years of experience teaching biology and preferably environmental science.

• Advanced degree in biology, or a closely related field, with course work in environmental science.

• Experience to prep, lead and develop innovative labs.

• Adherence to lab safety protocols and procedures.

• Enthusiasm to engage and lead teen learners in and out of the classroom.

• Strong interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work well with a team and independently.

• Willingness to develop connections and collaborate with other WRA academic departments, university biology departments and/or industry leaders.

• Motivation to provide and engage in enrichment experiences for students, such as academic competitions

• Proficient in using technology to enhance learning in the classroom, including data collection systems.

• Evidence of professional development in biology and/or education.

DutieS & ReSPonSibilitieS

WRA strives to find the right balance of duties and responsibilities for each faculty member. Typical expectations:

w Teach four classes, including biology and environmental science, if qualified.

w Participate in the student life program, including dormitory duty.

w Engage in afternoon programs and Saturday Academy.

w Serve as an academic advisor for a small group of students.

w Attend school and faculty gatherings.

w Serve on appropriate committees.
