BASKETBALL

The new $30 million Mountaineer Field House was opened in the spring of 2014.

Western State Colorado University, the highest four-year institution of higher learning in the United States at 7,703 feet above sea level, opened its doors to students 103 years ago this fall and celebrated a century of educating educators three academic years ago.

Western is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, with academic programs that take advantage of the natural laboratory that surrounds campus. The college has the only college-based Mountain Rescue Team in the nation and is consistently ranked by National Geographic and Fly Rod and Reel Magazine as one of the top colleges for students to experience outdoor recreation.

Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain are both within an hour drive of campus for winter sports, and Hartman Rocks features a range of activites in the summer. The City of Gunnison hosted the start of the “Queen’s Stage” of the USA Pro Cycling Tour, which several international cycling experts called one of the toughest stages to receive certifi cation.

The Mountaineers have maintained one of the top small college athletic programs in the nation, with the fourth-highest average in the history of the Learfi eld Sports Directors’ Cup. With 90 RMAC championships, 107 individual national championships and 15 national team championships, the Mountaineers have been building “Champions Out of Thin Air” since the college opened in 1911. The programs have maintained one of the top graduation rates in Division II when compared to the student body, with several programs outpacing the national average many times over.

BASKETBALLPAUL WRIGHT GYMBuilt in 1951 and renovated sev-eral times since, Paul Wright Gym boasts a capacity of 1,800 specta-tors. At 7,728 feet above sea level, the facility is the highest collegiate gym in the world.

In 1960, the current swimming pool was added to the facility. In 1965, the wrestling room was added on the east side to help sup-port the back-to-back college divi-sion national championship teams of 1963 and 1964.

In 1998, a major 40,000 square foot renovation was completed that added a 2,500 square foot weight room and a locker facility for visiting teams and the Western State stu-dent body. Along with the south addition, six class-rooms were included that allowed the Recreation and Exercise Science Department to conduct all its classes in one building.

During the 1998 renovation, the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame Room was completed with meeting facilities and trophy cases.

In 2008, a new gym fl oor and retractable baskets were installed. New bleachers were installed in 2005.

The Mountaineer Field House resides on the southwest portion of the building. The facility features a com-petition size 200-meter track for collegiate and high school meets, expanded offi ce areas for the Mountain-eer Athletic Department, a new weight training facil-ity, an additional training room, a new High Altitude Performance Lab and a student recreation facility on the south end of the building.

The building is named after Paul W. Wright, who spent 38 years as a professor, coach and administrator at Western State. He also served as judge and mayor in Gunnison and was instrumental in establishing skiing as an NCAA sport.

Bradd Schafer takes the reins of the Western State Colorado University men’s basketball program for the fi rst time in 2014-15. Schafer was hired as the Mountaineers’ Head Coach on May 29, 2014 after a nation-wide search.

Schafer comes to Western after spending the past eight seasons, four of which as the Head Coach, at Black Hills State University. During those eight years at Black Hills, Schafer had an overall record of 133-105, and a head coaching record of 56-57. Schafer also led the Yellow Jackets during a transitional period as Black Hills State moved from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II and into the RMAC.

During the 2010-11 season, Schafer guided Black Hills State to a 27-6 overall record with a mark of 12-2 in the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC). Black Hills State had three DAC All-Confer-ence players and two NAIA All-American selections. The Yellow Jackets won the DAC regular season title as well as the DAC Tournament Championship. Schafer then led the Yellow Jack-ets to the NAIA National Tournament Sweet Sixteen round and ended the season ranked fi fth in the nation.

From 2006 to 2010, Schafer assisted the Black Hills State Head Coach in all phases of the program, including daily operations, recruiting, practice, individual workouts and summer camps. In 2008-09, Schafer helped guide the Yellow Jackets to a 30-5 record and an appearance at the NAIA National Tournament Final Four.

Prior to Black Hills State, Schafer was an assistant coach at Colo-rado School of Mines in 2005-06. During his time in Golden, the Orediggers advanced to the fi nal four of the RMAC Shootout for the fi rst time in over a decade. They also ended Metro State’s 47 game home winning streak.

Before entering the college level, Schafer was an assistant coach for four years at Windsor High School in Windsor, Colorado,

where he helped guide the team to an 80-20 record including a trip to the state championship in 2002-03.

Originally from Gilcrest, Colorado, Schafer played his collegiate career at Western from 1996-01 under Bob Hofman, the win-ningest coach in Mountaineer men’s basketball history. He was a team captain in 2000-01, and led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in three-point fi eld goal percentage that same season. Schafer earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from West-ern in 2001, and a master’s degree in strategic leadership from Black Hills State in 2010.

BASKETBALL VAN GIRARDHead CoachVan Girard begins his third season at Western State Colorado

University in 2014.

Before coming to Western, Girard spent 24 seasons at the helm of the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball program.

The winningest women’s basketball coach in the history of Cal State Dominguez Hills, Girard put his trademark stamp of hard-nosed pressure defense to go along with an up-tempo style of play on the Carson campus.

Girard took over the reigns at Cal State Dominguez Hills in 1988. He turned the Toros into one of the top NCAA Division II programs on the West Coast. He led CSUDH to three total CCAA titles including a 2009 title, three runner-up fi nishes (including the 2004-05 campaign) and fi ve 3rd-place fi nishes in one of the strongest conferences in the country.

He also guided the Toros to the CCAA Tournament 10 times while earning fi ve NCAA West Region playoff berths, including the 2008-09 season in which the Toros lost a 66-65 heartbreaking buzzer-beater to perennial power UC San Diego.

Girard’s record speaks for itself. He is atop CSUDH’s all-time coaching record list, compiling a 302-350 mark en route to being named the CCAA Coach of the Year fi ve times, including a stretch of three-consecutive years (1994-96). On March 3, 2007, Girard achieved his milestone 250th win in an 83-56 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.

Girard likes to play a very up-tempo style of basketball while incorporating his trademark man-to-man pressure defense. The opposition knows to expect a swarming high-pressure defense and a creative offense when they face Girard’s squad. Known as a teacher of fundamentals, Girard has coached one All-American, seven All-West Region players, three CCAA Conference MVPs and 42 all-conference players.

Prior to Cal State Dominguez Hills, Girard served as Assistant Athletics Director at Lynwood High School and the girl’s varsity basketball coach for ten years. During that span, he compiled an incredible 230-48 career record for an amazing winning percentage of .827. In creating a dynasty at Lynwood, Girard led his team to 10-straight playoff berths, seven-consecutive San Gabriel Valley Conference championships, two CIF championship appearances and two Southern Regional State playoff championships, with 1986 culminating in a CIF title.

During his tenure at Lynwood HS, he twice was honored as the

Los Angeles Times “4A Coach of the Year.” Even more impressive, Girard was honored as the California and CIF “Coach of the Year” in 1986. Fifteen players under his tutelage earned NCAA Division I or Division II athletic scholarships at the col-legiate level.

In a March 5, 2004, ceremony held at the Pyramid on the campus of Cal State Long Beach, Girard forever was immortalized for his achievements at the prep level. Along with Southern California coaching notables Ron Palmer (LB Poly), Gary Prestesator (San Dimas HS) and Cliff Warren (El Segundo, Rolling Hills, Redondo and Peninsula High Schools), the CSULB alumnus was inducted into the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (SCIBCA) Hall of Fame for the legacy he left at Lynwood HS.

While at CSUDH, Girard worked closely with the local Boys & Girls clubs providing free coaches and team clinics. He also worked closely with the City of Carson Parks and Recreation Department, as well as the local Carson-Gardena YMCA in providing more opportunities for girls basketball.

Girard is a 1977 graduate of Long Beach State, earning his bachelor’s degree in History.

MAYLINN SMITHASSISTANT COACH

Maylinn Smith is in her fi rst year as the head assistant coach of the Western State women’s basketball team.

Smith fi nished a stellar playing career in 2014.

From 2010-13, Smith was a member of the Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team. While at GCU, Smith was named the

2012 PacWest Player of the Year, leading GCU and ranking among the

PacWest’s best in a number of categories. In 2012, Smith ranked fi rst in the conference and 11th among all Division II players with an 87.5 free throw percentage, was second in the PacWest with a 39.8 three-point percentage and third with 16.2 points per game. Smith garnered Daktronics Second-Team West Region honors as a sophomore and was named to the 2010-11 PacWest All-Conference honorable mention. Smith also helped lead GCU to three conference championships.

In 2013-14, Smith helped lead Southern Utah to a Big Sky Champion-ship.

A native of Mesa, Arizona, Smith graduated from Southern Utah in 2014.

BASKETBALLRULES FOR BOOSTERS

Everyone associated with the Western State Colorado University Athletics program (coaches, staff, student-athletes, boosters) has the responsibility to comply with NCAA rules involving pros-pects and student-athletes. Mountaineer athletic support groups are a very valuable part of the Western Athletic Department. All present and past members of these groups are considered boosters and therefore, are held to compliance with these standards. Please review the information on what boosters may or may not do, and ask before you act.

Recruiting GuidelinesA Booster may:• contact a prospect as long as the booster had an established relationship prior to the student becoming a prospect and as long as there is no attempt to recruit the prospect for Western;• watch a prospect’s athletic contest (but not have contact with that prospect or the prospect’s parents); and• provide names, statistics, newspaper articles, etc. of outstanding prospects from the booster’s local area to Western coaches and staff (but not contact that prospect’s coach or school offi cials in order to gather materials pertaining to the prospect’s athletic or academic abilities).

A Booster may not:• contact (telephone or in writing/e-mail) a prospect or his/her parents in person, for the purposes of recruiting the prospect;• make contact with a prospect or his/her parents on or off the Western campus for the purposes of recruiting his/her to Western;• mail anything to a prospect, including press releases, media guides, posters, schedule cards, etc.;• approach a Western coach who is with a prospect either on or off the Western campus;• contact or request anything (transcript, videotape) from a prospect’s counselor or coach in order to evaluate the athletic or academic ability of a prospect; and• provide any extra benefi t to a prospect or his/her family or friends.

Rules Regarding current Western Student-AthletesA Booster may:• provide an occasional family home meal to a student-athlete or an entire team. Such meal must take place in the home, not in a restaurant. The meal may be catered.• provide employment under certain circumstances to current student-athletes. Student-athletes must be paid the established rate (in the area for similar services) for work actually performed.

A Booster may not:• provide extra benefi ts to any student-athlete and his/her family;• use the name or picture of a student-athlete to directly or indi-rectly promote the sale or use of a commercial product or service;• provide free or reduced rate housing for a student-athlete or his/her family;

• hire a student-athlete to house-sit;• provide an honorarium to a student-athlete who has been ap-proved for a speaking engagement. Student-athletes may receive only actual and necessary travel expenses to pre-approved speak-ing engagements; and• provide any extra benefi t to a current student-athlete.

Student-Athlete EmploymentA student-athlete may be employed during or outside the academic year, provided:• The student-athlete’s compensation does not include any re-muneration for value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following that he or she has obtained because of athlet-ics ability;• The student-athlete is compensated only for work actually performed;• The student-athlete is compensated at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services; and

Employer “Do’s” and “Don’ts”• The athletic department may arrange employment for prospects in the summer prior to their enrollment as freshmen and for enrolled student-athletes during all offi cial vacation periods (sum-mer, winter, spring) during the academic year.• Do not provide free transportation to and from jobs for student-athletes, unless such transportation is provided to all employees.• Do provide employment for prospective and currently enrolled student-athletes during permissible time periods and at regular pay rates for similarly qualifi ed non-athlete employees.
