Historic Uptown Westerville (614) 794-0401www .visitwesterville .org

Once known as The Dry Capital of the World, Westerville and its Uptown District have come a long way since the days of Prohibition. Uptown has retained its beauty and historic charm while gaining a vibrant mix of unique

shops, restaurants, coffee houses, art galleries and convenient service busi-nesses, all within an easy stroll from nearby off-street parking. Uptown is home to the 72,000-square-foot West-erville Public Library, Otterbein Univer-sity, the Hanby House Museum and the Temperance Row Historic District. Visit soon to enjoy this unique blend of old and new.

The Hanby House 160 W . main st .(614) 891-6289(800) 600-6843www .hanbyhouse .org

A visit to the Hanby House is a look into our nation’s past. Bishop Wil-liam Hanby, co-founder of Otterbein University, was an abolitionist and a “conductor” on the Un-derground Railroad. His son, Benjamin, was the composer of more than 80

folk songs and hymns including Darling Nelly Gray, a popular song of the Civil War era, and Up on the Housetop, still sung by children worldwide. The Hanby House contains five rooms of antiques from the mid- to late 1800s, includ-ing some of Ben’s original instruments, musical scores and artifacts. The site is recognized by the United Method-ist church as one of only three United Methodist Heritage Landmarks in the state of Ohio. The Westerville Garden Club maintains the Kitchen Gardens, featuring plants that were used for household purposes between 1850 and 1890. You can enjoy refreshments, historic decorations and special music during the Christmas Open House dur-ing Uptown’s Home for the Holidays, on the first Tuesday in December; and the following weekend. Open Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 p.m., May through September. Groups and private tours year-round by appointment. See www.hanbyhouse.org for family history, cal-endar and contact information.

Anti-Saloon League Museum 126 s . state st .(614) 882-7277 x2160www .wpl .lib .oh .us/antisaloon/

In the mid-1800s, Westerville’s town legacy was established with the pas-sage of one of the earliest prohibition ordinances in Ohio banning “spiritu-ous liquors.” This law was challenged in the 1870s by a series of events known as “The Westerville Whiskey Wars.” Westerville’s dry reputation en-ticed the Anti-Saloon League to move its national printing headquarters to the community and earned it the nickname “Dry Capital of the World.” Today, the Westerville Public Library’s Anti-Saloon League Museum, housed in the League’s old headquarters

building, shares the role that the town and the League played in making the country “dry.” The museum contains artifacts and temperance materials printed by the League. Guided and self-guided tours, an audiovisual pre-sentation, and research opportunities are available. The building also houses the Westerville Local History Center with displays, photographs and materi-als on Westerville, including assistance with Westerville genealogy research.

All areas are open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Saturdays closed for lunch 1 to 2 p.m.)

Temperance Row Historic District vicinity of Park, Grove, Walnut and university streets(614) 794-0401

The homes on Temperance Row were built in the early 1900s by the leaders of the Anti-Saloon League of America, who brought their headquarters to Westerville. These crusaders were not

only successful in achieving na-tional Prohibition, but also in constructing some of the most architecturally interest-ing homes of their day and our own. The entire district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its signifi-cance in local, national and ar-chitectural history.

First Responders Park374 W . main st . (614) 794-0401

Westerville’s history of community service dates back to 1860, when the city’s first fire department was formed. The dedication of fire, police and dis-patch personnel, past and present, is celebrated in the inspirational setting of First Responders Park. In addition to a sculpture called The Crossing, the

park includes a piece of World Trade Center steel measuring 18 feet tall and 4 feet wide, and weighing 2.3 tons. This piece was part of the federal investi-gation into the collapse of the towers. It once spanned the 98th-101st floors on the north face of WTC 1, which was struck by the 767 aircraft at 8:46 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001.
