The Louisiana State Department of Education Graduation Pathways

Graduation Options

The Louisiana High School Redesign Commission has adopted the following graduation options. The TOPS University Diploma is designed for students who plan to enter a four-year college or university upon graduation from high school. Students selecting the TOPS University Pathway will continue to pursue core academic credits that mirror the TOPS Core curriculum. Among students’ core course credits, students may pursue CLEP or dual enrollment credits where available. Students graduating on the TOPS University Pathway may also complete Jump Start courses as electives. The Jump Start TOPS Tech Diploma is designed for students who plan to enter a community college, a technical school, or the workforce upon graduation from high school. Students pursuing the Jump Start TOPS Tech Pathway may earn basic or advanced credentials in statewide or regional career areas or equivalent credentials earned through dual enrollment coursework. Students graduating with a Jump Start TOPS Tech Career Diploma will be required to attain Jump Start statewide or regional credentials. Through elective coursework, students may also earn the TOPS University credential. If this pathway is selected, the student and his/her parent or guardian must meet with the Professional School Counselor to discuss the student’s options. This meeting can be held as early as the student’s first year of high school. Both the student and parent(s) must sign the Jump Start Participation Form. The principal signifies approval of the request with his/her signature.

Please make all course selections very carefully. Students will be held accountable for choices once

schedules are completed. Schedules changes will only be made at the discretion of administration during the first two weeks of the year, and these changes will only be granted in rare circumstances.

The tables on the following pages show the course requirements for TOPS University Diploma and Jump Start TOPS Tech Diploma.

Grade Classification

In accordance with Iberia Parish Pupil Progression, the grade classification of a student depends upon the number of credits earned. A student’s grade level will be determined once per year and will be based on credits earned the previous school year. Grade levels will not be changed except at the start of each school year. The minimum number of credits required for each classification is as follows: To be classified as a Sophomore, a student must earn a minimum of 6 credits. To be classified as a Junior, a student must earn a minimum of 12 credits. To be classified as a Senior, a student must have 18 credits. To be eligible for graduation, a student must complete 23 credits on the JumpStart diploma track or 24 credits on the TOPS University diploma track

Earning a Carnegie Credit

According to Iberia Parish policy, students must earn a minimum of four (4) quality points in the four grading periods to earn a Carnegie unit. Additionally, students must acquire a minimum of two (2) quality points during the last two grading periods of a course including earning a minimum of one (1) quality point during the fourth grading period. Students earning four quality points or more, but failing to earn a quality point in the fourth grading period must achieve their prescribed individual growth target on the designated standards-based post assessment (per course) to receive the credit if it exists for that course. If not, the student must earn a minimum of a 67% on the designated standards-based post assessment (per course) to receive the credit for the course. For courses which include a LEAP 2025 exam, students must acquire a minimum of four (4) quality points in the four grading periods. Additionally, students must acquire a minimum of two (2) quality points during the last two grading periods of a course including earning a minimum of at least one (1) quality point during the fourth grading period. A final GPA of 1.0 must be earned inclusive of the grades from each of the four grading periods and the assessment. Students earning four quality points or more, but failing to earn a quality point in the fourth grading period must earn Approaching Basic or above on the respective assessment to receive the Carnegie unit for the course.

Grading Scales On-Level grading scale:

A = 100 – 93 B = 92 – 85 C = 84 – 75 D = 74 – 67 F = 66 – 0 Honors grading scale:

LEAP 2025 Testing

LEAP test results count as 20% of the final average in Algebra I, Geometry, English I, English II, Biology and US History. ALL students enrolled in a LEAP course are required to take the LEAP exam for that course, and it will count as part of the student’s final average in the course. For incoming freshmen in 2010-2011 and beyond, students must meet the high-stakes assessment requirements below to earn a diploma. As a graduation requirement for TOPS University or JumpStart diploma, students must pass three LEAP tests in the following categories:

Either Algebra I or Geometry

Either English I or English II

Either Biology I or US History

A student has passed the LEAP test if he or she scores APPROACHING BASIC, BASIC, MASTERY, or ADVANCED on the LEAP test. A score of UNSATISFACTORY means that the student failed the LEAP test.

Individual Graduation Plan Requirements Act 257 of the 2009 Louisiana Legislature

By the end of the 8th grade, each student shall develop, with the input of his/her family, an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP). The purposes of the IGP document and related activities are as follows:

Explore educational and career possibilities

Make appropriate secondary/postsecondary decisions as part of an overall career plan

Plan based on the student’s talents and interests

Consider graduation requirements relevant to the student’s career pathway (area of concentration) and postsecondary entrance requirements

IGP’s are updated annually on the Schedule Request Form.

Assessment Recovery

If a student scores either a “D” or “F” on a summative (major) assessment, the student qualifies for

assessment/test recovery. In order to take advantage of the program, students must adhere to all criteria set

forth through the Iberia Parish recovery policy, including:

1. The opportunity is offered to all students scoring below 75% on any assessment. 2. Students who refuse to take a test, cheat on a test, leave a test more than 75% blank, or do not put

forth effort as sufficiently documented by the classroom teacher are not eligible for test recovery. 3. Students who score below 35% on an assessment will need teacher permission to participate in

recovery opportunities. 4. Remediation is required before students may attempt assessment recovery. 5. The highest re-score that can be attained through assessment recovery is a 75% C. 6. Students are only allowed one (1) recovery opportunity for each summative assessment. 7. IBC assessments follow their own industry-based requirements and regulations for recovery. 8. Dual enrollment courses are governed by the crediting university. These courses follow university

guidelines and are not eligible for assessment recovery.

Page 13: WESTGATE HIGH SCHOOL - Amazon S3€¦ · 4 Westgate High School Directory 2020-2021 Administration and Counselor Directory: Administration Office Phone Number (337-365-2431) Fax Number

13

Additionally, the remediation and assessment must take place within the period of seven (7) school days in

which the make-up center is open. For students enrolled in an Honors course, only two (2) assessment

recoveries may occur per course per grading period.

Grading Period Recovery

If student fails a grading period, he/she can participate in Grading Period Recovery. Grading Period Recovery

allows the student to redo the grading period failed (in Edgenuity – online) and earn up to a 75C. The student

must enroll within one week after the report card has been distributed, and must complete the work and take

the test before the end of that grading period. For example, if the student fails the 1st grading period, he/she

MUST enroll in Grading Period Recovery in the first week of the 2nd grading period AND complete all

assignments and assessments before the end of the 2nd grading period. *Not all courses are available in

Edgenuity; therefore, not all courses offer Grading Period Recovery.* Contact your guidance counselor to

enroll.

Credit Recovery

Credit recovery is an instructional program for students who have failed core courses taken previously. Credit

recovery courses are taught using the computer software program Edgenuity. To recover credit, the student

must pass a comprehensive final exam and LEAP, if applicable. When using the Credit Recovery option, the

original failure remains on the transcript, and the new passing grade is entered as a separate line (as if this is

the second time a student has taken the course). The highest grade possible for the course is a C. *Not all

courses are available in Edgenuity; therefore, not all courses offer Credit Recovery.* Once a student has been

enrolled in a credit recovery course for over a year and has not completed it, the student will be enrolled in

the course face-to-face the following school year.

*A student athlete interested in a Division I or II University MUST repeat the required courses in their entirety to fulfill the NCAA requirements. Students cannot simply repeat the deficient skills of a required course they fail. In other words, they cannot use the credit recovery option for promotion of subjects failed. It will not meet the NCAA requirement for that course.* Contact your guidance counselor to enroll.

Industry-based certification

An Industry-Based Certification (IBC) is tangible evidence that an individual has successfully demonstrated skill competencies in a specific set of work-related tasks, single occupations area, or a cluster of related occupational areas. Classes that offer IBC’s are NCCER Core, CIW, IBCA, BCA, Principles of Business (POB), Entrepreneurship, and all classes at IPCC. These IBCs are required certifications for students to graduate on the JumpStart Diploma pathway.

Summer School

The purpose of summer school is to enable students to make up subjects failed. The subjects offered are determined by student requests. To obtain credit for a summer school course, the student must be enrolled in an accredited summer school program and must successfully complete the requirements of the course.

Page 14: WESTGATE HIGH SCHOOL - Amazon S3€¦ · 4 Westgate High School Directory 2020-2021 Administration and Counselor Directory: Administration Office Phone Number (337-365-2431) Fax Number

14

If a student intends to attend a summer school program which is not sponsored by the Iberia Parish School System, documentation concerning the accreditation of that summer school program must be submitted to the principal prior to entering that program. The principal determines whether the student will receive credit for the course.

Partial-Day Students

Partial day is only available to seniors. Seniors must have all requirements needed for graduation, including Industry-Based Certifications (IBCs). Additionally, seniors pursuing a TOPS University Diploma must have earned a minimum of an 18 on the ACT; seniors pursuing a Jump Start Diploma must have earned a minimum of a Silver on the WorkKeys test. Seniors do not qualify for partial day if they are completing a class online via Edgenuity. Seniors are not allowed to leave campus and return to attend another scheduled class – There will be no “gaps” in schedules. Office/Guidance aides and tutors must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must sign a confidentiality agreement.

Partial-day students are responsible for their own transportation and must adhere to the following guidelines.

1. Sign in/out in the front office at the attendance desk. 2. Late arrivals (no 1st period class) are responsible for knowing the day’s bell schedule and arrive at the

appropriate time. Habitual tardiness can result in loss of partial day status. 3. Sign out within 5 minutes of the tardy bell of the previous period/lunch. 4. Exit the building through the front doors. NO EXCEPTIONS! 5. Athletes with afternoon partial day may return for practice at dismissal.

Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment is the simultaneous enrollment of a student at both high school and college in which the student receives credit on both their high school and college transcripts for the same course. Students enrolled in a college course follow the college curriculum. Candidates must meet the following criteria to enroll in a Dual Enrollment course: 18 in English on ACT, 19 in Math, with a 19 composite, as well as a GPA of a 2.5. For students with no ACT score, the Pre-ACT can be substituted. If an ACT is present, the Pre-ACT does not qualify. Once enrolled, students must adhere to all University policies and do not have access to Iberia Parish’s recovery programs. There is a cost of tuition for each course. Iberia Parish will fund one Math or one English course for all enrolled students. Additional courses are the financial responsibility of students and their parents. Students will not be allowed to enroll in a course for which they have not paid, as per the Dual Enrollment contract. A dual enrollment course will follow a semester long format with high school credit being dually awarded at the completion of a single semester. Additionally, students will have to adhere to each universities’ enrollment policy. Each Dual Enrollment course must be taught by a university approved instructor. If the instructor becomes no longer available, the course can no longer be offered through Dual Enrollment. The following courses are currently approved for Dual Enrollment at Westgate High School:

Fall Only (August-December) Spring Only (January-May)

English 1010 (English IV credit) English 1020

Math 1021 (College Algebra) Math 1022 (Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus)

Math 1530 (Calculus A) Math 1540 (Calculus B)

Grades earned through the post-secondary institution are recorded on the post-secondary transcript and will follow that student throughout their post-secondary education. NOTE: Grades earned will affect GPA, scholarships, and TOPS.

The following grading scale will be used to assign High School DE grades: A = 100 – 90 B = 89 – 83 C = 82 – 75 D = 74 – 70 F = 69 – 0

The following grading scale will be used to assign Post-Secondary grades: A = 100 – 90 B = 89 – 80 C = 79 – 70 D = 69 – 60 F = 59 – 0

The high school grade earned in the course may be determined in the same manner as the grade earned at the university.

If a student elected to only enroll in the first or second semester of the course, the student will be enrolled in a Study Hall class for non-credit in the available semester. Seniors are the only students allowed to utilize partial day.

Graduation

Full participation in the graduation ceremony at Westgate High School is a privilege and not a right for the individual student and his/her parents. Therefore, the privilege of graduating with one’s class on graduation night is governed by the following principles:

1. Successful completion of the course of studies and testing required by the State of Louisiana and Iberia Parish School Board. All online coursework must be completed and comprehensive exams must be taken by the last day of classes for seniors. This is usually 1 week before graduation ceremonies.

2. Certification by Westgate High School’s administrators as having followed the rules and regulations of the

school to such a degree that the student earned the privilege of being an active participant in the graduation ceremony. These rules and regulations specifically include the section on suspension and expulsion found in the student handbook. However, other breaches of rules and regulations may be considered by the administration before bestowing on the student the privilege of being able to participate in the graduation ceremony.

The Student of the Year shall serve as the Master/Mistress of Ceremonies for the graduation ceremony. The Master/Mistress of Ceremonies will walk in his/her appropriate class position. The Valedictorian will give the commencement address. The salutatorian will give the welcome address. The valedictorian and salutatorian will lead the graduating class. Those students with speaking parts, chosen from the top ranking Honor Graduates, will comprise the front row and walk/sit in ranking order, followed by the raining Honor Graduates in alphabetical order. All Honor Graduates will be recognized individually. Beginning with the class of 2024, a minimum GPA of 2.5 and a composite of 20 on the ACT are required for recognition as completing the Honors Program at Westgate Senior High. (See the Honors Program section of this book for Valedictorian Requirements and more detailed information on being an Honor Graduate.)

16

Cumulative Grade Point Average

Cumulative grade point average is calculated on a 4-point scale. Final averages are used with quality points assigned as follows:

1-Credit Course

A = 4 quality points B = 3 quality points C = 2 quality points D = 1 quality point

Quality points for ½ credit, 2 credit, and 3 credit courses are adjusted according to the value of the

course credit. All credits attempted will be included for cumulative grade point average (CGPA) purposes. Rank in class is based upon un-weighted cumulative grade point average.

Additional Information on Curriculum

Students who cannot participate in required Physical Education classes because of medical reasons must present to the counselor (before registration) a written, medical statement from a qualified physician. Students will take PE online through the Edgenuity software. These medical statements must be updated yearly until the student has graduated.

It is necessary in some courses for a fee to be charged. All fees will have to be paid within two weeks after the beginning of the semester. Schedule changes will not be made because of a student’s inability to pay fees. Please review course descriptions carefully and do not schedule courses that charge a fee if you are unwilling or unable to pay them.

Please take note that prerequisites for certain courses are included. Do not schedule a course with a prerequisite unless you have fulfilled the necessary requirements.

The course directory contains brief descriptions of courses along with necessary information as to grade level prerequisites. Honors, dual enrollment, and gifted are the highest academic levels. On-level is the average academic level. Be sure that the level of the course fits your abilities.

Please make all course selections very carefully. Students will be held accountable for choices once schedules are completed. Schedules changes will only be made at the discretion of administration during the first two weeks of the semester, and these changes will only be granted in rare circumstances.

Students may not receive credit for the same course twice.

WorkKeys

WorkKeys is part of the ACT series and Iberia Parish is recognized as a WorkKeys Ready Community whereas local institutes recognize WorkKeys during their hiring process.

WorkKeys helps students, colleges, and employers determine the skill levels required for various jobs.

WorkKeys® is a job skills assessment system that helps employers select, hire, train, develop, and retain a high-performance workforce.

WorkKeys testing is generally done by juniors and/or seniors.

WorkKeys is the final exam for both Business English and Business Math courses and is mandatory for all students enrolled.

The WorkKeys exam is divided into three separate exams: Workplace Documents. Graphic Literacy, and Applied Math

A student can earn a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum on the exams.

The student’s composite is determined by the lowest score of the three exams.

The composite score of a Silver or above can be used as a graduation requirement for students in several Jumpstart Diploma pathways.

Due to the importance of the WorkKeys exam, additional graduation tickets may be offered to students based on their WorkKeys composite.

Graduation Recognition Class of 2021 & Beyond Graduates who complete the Honors Program will receive a cord during the graduation ceremony acknowledging their successful completion of the program.

A weighted average will be utilized for ranking purposes only in the graduation ceremony. The Weighted GPA will be calculated for Honor Program students with a CGPA of 3.500 or higher on a 4.000 scale. A maximum of 20 honor/AP/Gifted courses will be utilized to determine the weighted CGPA.

One (1) quality point will be added to the grade earned in the honor, dual enrollment, and gifted courses utilized (ex. A = 5, B = 4, C = 3). A “D” in an honor course is not weighted.

One and one half (1.5) quality points will be added to the grade earned in AP courses utilized (ex. A = 5.5, B = 4.5, C = 3.5). A “D” in an AP course is not weighted.**

The quality points for the weighted Honor/AP/DE/Gifted courses and for the non-honor courses will be totaled and then divided by 29 for the class of 2021, 28 for the class of 2022, 27 for the class of 2023, and 26 for the class of 2024 and beyond [minimum program requirements] to arrive at a weighted grade point average.

If a student earns more than 20 Honor/AP/DE/Gifted credits, the courses selected for weight will be in the following preferential order:

1. The grade earned in all AP courses [core/elective] will be utilized.**

2. The grade earned in all remaining core honor/DE/gifted courses will be utilized.

3. The grade earned in honor foreign languages courses will be utilized.

4. The grade earned in honor/gifted elective courses will be utilized. If a student earns more than 29 for the class of 2021, 28 for the class of 2022, 27 for the class of 2023, and 26 for the class of 2024 and beyond, the 10 courses selected for the unweighted calculation will be in the following preferential order:

1. Core courses not used in the weighted calculation. 2. Elective courses required for graduation not used in the weighted calculation.

** Beginning with the Class of 2020, the weight for an AP course will only be applied for class ranking purposes if the course is available for all students. Example: If an AP course is only available to Gifted Students, the weight will not be applied since regular education students do not have the same opportunity. In this case, one (1) quality point will be added to the grade earned in the AP course taken by a gifted student.

Beginning with the Class of 2024, graduates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5000 and an ACT composite of a 20 in order to be recognized as completing the Honors program.

All other graduates will be seated in alphabetical order.

Classes of 2021-2023: The valedictorian(s) will be the Honors program graduate(s) with the highest weighted cumulative grade point average from the qualified courses (see valedictorian required courses). The valedictorian(s) will give the commencement address.

Classes of 2024 and thereafter: The valedictorian(s) will be the Honors program graduate(s) with the highest weighted cumulative grade point average from the qualified courses (see valedictorian required courses) and with an ACT composite of a 27 or higher. The last ACT accepted for valedictorian consideration will be the February ACT date. The valedictorian(s) will give the commencement address.
