Westgate Sports News Badminton Brilliance! The Westgate girls KS4 badminton team travelled up to the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes to compete in the National finals of the Schools badminton competition. 44,000 players started the compe- tition representing 8,000 different schools across England, of which just 9 teams were left. The team of Leah Allen, Annie Lado, Tash Lado & Angelina Wong were favourites to win having won in 2015 and winning 2 silvers in 2016 when the girls were split over key stages. The winning finals saw them brush aside Truro School from Cornwall and Hymers College from Yorkshire and saw the girls lost just 2 games (out of 70) in the whole competition. Becoming National Champions now qualifies the team from Westgate School to compete in the World Schools Competi- tion in India next year ! For Under 17 national champion Annie Lado, winning the national schools title to go alongside her individual crowns, made her full of joy. National Medalists A huge congratulations goes to Ben Fyvie-Rae and Jack Rowley who competed in the National Gymnastics Final in Stoke-on-Trent. The boys per- formed an exceptional routine and managed to come away with silver medals, only nar- rowly missing out on the gold. The boys should be hugely proud of what they have achieved—their hard work defi- nitely paid off! County Cup Champions F riday 5th May saw the Westgate year 10 football team take on Brookfield School in the Hampshire Cup Final in Aldershot. The game was end to end, with striker Finley Brett putting Westgate 1-0 up in the opening 5 minutes, for Brookfield School to level with a long range strike and then go ahead and into the half time 2-1 up. What- ever team manager, Mr Pullinger said at half time worked, as Westgate quickly pulled level with defender Joe Bayles scoring from a scramble in the box after a Westgate corner. Heads up, Westgate dominated the next few passages of play and with 15 minutes of the tie remaining, they went ahead after a fantastic run into the box by Brett, pulling it back for Dylan Croucher to coolly slot it in. Brookfield were down, but not out, and piled the pressure on the Westgate goal until the final whistle. This relentless pressure paid off and 5 minutes from the end they scored a deserved equaliser to take the match to 3-3 and into extra time. Neither team could break the deadlock during the period of extra time, so the cup was to be decided on penalties. After 4 penalties, each ‘keeper had saved 2, and it was tied 2-2. Up stepped Westgate’s Captain Jude Royall, who calmly dispatched his penalty and it was down to Brookfield to score the final penalty to keep their team in the game. Luke did what he does best and produced a world class save to win the County cup for Westgate for the first time. After the celebrations, fittingly the team left it for ‘Keeper Judd to go up last and raise the cup. Hockey Success The U13 Boys Hockey Team had their first tournament on Thursday at Kings School. This was the first time all the boys had played together and for some of the boys, it in- cluded their first ever match. Team Westgate got off to a great start by winning their first game 3-2, and their sec- ond game 7-0! The final game was against Kings and after a while of an equal 1-1 score line, Kings scored a last mi- nute winning goal to win the tournament, with Westgate in second place. Westgate did brilliantly well and each of the boys should be proud in the fact they played some high class hockey. The team can now look forward to training for the rest of the summer term, before facing King's again next academic year. A special mention goes to team cap- tain Henry Crompton who played some exceptional hockey, as well as Heath Thornton and Cody Roberts who scored during their debut. Busta Rhyme! Students who have been attending Creative

Writing club have recently been writing poetry,

and some have even been published after being

entered into the Busta Rhyme competition. 1

lucky student may even win themselves £1000!

As he chops down the trees he tells himself,

That he is doing no bad and he is okay,

For he works for the humans,

For an amount of pay.

But really he is killing,

Killing all the world,

Killing it slowly,

But that he has not been told.

For he works hard,

And hard he works,

Killing the world,

For his pay.

For money is why he

kills,

Money is why he works,

Money kills the world,

Or so I’ve been told.

- Quilla Roberts (Year 7)

Spring Concert

2017

On Thursday 27th April the main

hall was awash with the sound of

music from morning until the

evening as rehearsals took place

for the annual Spring Concert.

The Big Band started off the pro-

ceedings with ‘Choo Choo Ch’

Boogie, followed by the newly

formed Flute & Clarinet Choir

with ‘Greensleeves’ and ‘Allegro’.

The Barbershop Sextet per-

formed an old Frank Sinatra fa-

vourite ‘Come Fly with Me’ and a

traditional African folk song

‘Meguru’. The Year 11 Jazz Band

consisting of: Johnny Green on

Alto Saxophone; Sam Toth on

Trombone; Tom Blake on Double

Bass; Martyn Humphrys on Gui-

tar; Ed Polley on Drum kit and

harry Peters-Gill Year 10 per-

formed for the final time before

leaving us in July with their fa-

vourite sound track ‘Monsters Inc

Theme’. The String Ensemble

gave a jolly performance of

‘Tango Baroquita’, and the Junior

Orchestra, conducted by the ca-

pable Johnny Green Year 11 with

the inspirational ‘March Militaire’.

Mrs Joyce Ingledew’s Fiddle Folk

Group gave a beautiful rendition

of ‘Ashokan Farewell’, then were

joined by the Flutes for ‘Dublin

Time’. Another newly formed en-

semble was the Brass Quintet

playing the famous Beatles songs

‘Yesterday/Here, There and Eve-

rywhere’. Next on the programme

were the Rock Choir singing ‘Hit

the Road Jack’ and the Windband

performing a Suite from – ‘The

New World Symphony’. The Brass

Band conducted by Miss Gabriel-

le Horne gave a rousing perfor-

mance of

‘Magnificent Men in their Flying

Machines’, and the Vox Choir

sang a wonderful rendition of

‘Rule the world’ and ‘Naughty

from the Matilda musical.’ The

Senior Orchestra drew the even-

ing to a close with Mrs Becky Mo-

rant conducting a selection from

‘Les Miserables’ bringing the

marvellous evening of Westgate

music to a close until the Sum-

mer Concert on the 20th July.

How lucky we are to have such

talented musicians in our school!

Cricket Master Class Westgate staff cricket team had their first fixture of the

season against Arqiva. The team, consisting of Mr Pull-

inger, Mr Bird, Mr Searle, Mr Kinnaird, Mr Clement-

Smith, Mr Mills, Mr Green, Mr Packer, Mr Ive and Mr

es for the school.

This Months Puzzle

See if you can answer the following riddles. The

answers are at the bottom of this page:

1) What has a head, a tail, is brown and has

no legs?

2) The more you take, the more you leave be-

hind—what am I?

3) Poor people have it. Rich people need it. If

you eat it you die. What is it?

4) What belongs to you, but other people use it

more than you?

5) Before Mount Everest was discovered, what

was the highest mountain on Earth?

Poland Trip

2017 As we embarked on our trip to Po-

land, there was an atmosphere of

anticipation of what we were going

to see and do. The first day involved

a lot of travelling and after dinner

the group headed for a light evening

of bowling (shame about the rain!).

The next day we headed to Ausch-

witz. It was a dull and gloomy day.

The anticipation and also the anxiety

of what the day would bring were

clear as the bus pulled into the

grounds of the old camp. The audio

guide guided us and with the expert

knowledge of our leader we learnt

about the horrors of what had hap-

pened here. We were shocked by

the hair, the wedding rings, the suit-

cases and the countless reminders

of how truly horrendous human na-

ture can be. Forget about human

rights; forget about freedom and

liberty, all of that was stripped from

the Jews at Auschwitz. One of our

pupils remarked ‘nothing really pre-

pares you for this experience; it is

truly shocking what a human can do

to another human’. Later on in Os-

car Schindler’s factory, the true hor-

ror of what had happened to ordi-

nary Polish people became appar-

ent: they had been occupied by the

Nazis and then treated like sub hu-

mans by the Soviets for most of that

time. They say that you never hear

birds sing at Auschwitz but you do

and you can’t imagine why. The

world should never forget this place:

it is a reminder to all that the les-

sons of the past need to be remem-

bered and that human life must nev-

er be treated so cheaply again.

“Unbelievable facts; a thought

provoking day”

- Andy Hider
