We tend to see Jesus as God unencumbered with human flesh and frailty. No questions, just answers. No problems, just certainty. No temptations, just an absolute, inherent, unfailing sense of right. Always loving and compassionate. Never biased or prejudiced. Perfectly programmed in every respect. To look at Jesus this way robs him of his humanity. We make him so wholly other that he is no longer one of us. The incarnation becomes a fantasy, the crucifixion a charade, and the resurrection an illusion. It is sometimes more difficult to let Jesus be human than to see him as divine.” Philip Wahlberg, The Clergy Journal

GATHERING THOUGHT

“As we look back with twenty centuries of holy hindsight, we are apt to make the man of Galilee the superman of Galilee. It is sometimes more difficult to let Jesus be human than to see him as divine.”

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being;

whose face is hidden from us by our sins; and whose mercy we

forget in the blindness of our heart: cleanse us from all offenses,

and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires. Grant us

humble hearts, that we may draw near to You, confessing our

faults, confiding in Your grace, and finding in You alone our

refuge and our strength….. (time for us to offer silent prayers of

confession.)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Pastor: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel.

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

RESPONSE #582 Glory to God Whose Goodness Shines on Me

APOSTLES’ CREED (please stand if able)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by

the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius

Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell;

the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into

heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I

believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of

the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

MOMENT FOR CHILDREN AND PASSING THE PEACE

PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

……….Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our

debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power

and the glory forever, Amen.

OFFERTORY I Cannot Tell arr. Knowles

Alex Krenz, soloist

I cannot tell why He, the King of Heaven,

Should leave the peace of all eternity,

Why God Himself should lay aside His splendor

To leave the Father’s side and come to me.

But this I know: our silence filled with singing,

And all our darkness fled from heaven’s light

When Christ the Lord, so human, yet so holy,

In love was born a child for me that holy night.

I cannot tell when He will rule the nations,

How He will claim His loved ones as His own;

And who can tell the holy jubilation

When all His children gather ‘round His throne.

But this I know: all flesh will see His glory,

And skies will burst as all creation sings.

The Son will rise on one eternal morning

When Christ, the Savior of the world, is Lord and King!

When Christ, the Savior of the world, is Lord and King!

DOXOLOGY (please stand if able)

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all

creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts.

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.

UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION (from Feasting on the Word)

Gracious Lord, You have given us more mercy than we could

imagine and more blessings than we could deserve. Receive now

these gifts as tokens of our gratitude to You, that Your mercy

may be multiplied and Your blessings abound to embrace all

those in need. In Jesus’ name we pray, AMEN.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 15: 21-28

Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and

Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out

and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my

daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not answer her at

all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her

away, for she keeps shouting after us.” He answered, “I was sent

only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and

knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” He answered, “It is not

fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” She said,

“Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their

masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your

faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was

healed instantly.

Pastor: The Word of the Lord.
