At the Beam Detailsscreen,
click AutoMate ON.
STEP
To specify Beam Depthselect AutoMate- the software willdesign the LIGHTEST beam;
ORselect Maximum - the user should
specify the required MAXIMUM depth,and the software will design thelightest beam, NO DEEPER THANthe depth specied;
OR
select Fixed- the user should specifythe required EXACT depth and thesoftware will design the lightest beam
at the EXACT depth specied.

The user may choose to elongate oneor more of the cells.
After designing a beam (see pages4-6), click on Specials.
STEP
Click on Elongation/Welded Tee.
STEP 3
Scroll to the cell numbers you wishto elongate (open screen to full sizefor ease). Double-click on the boxshowingNo - it will change to Yes.You can elongate more than one cell.
STEP 4
Click Accept.
STEP 5
Repeat STEPS 6 and7 from theprevious section.

By stating the limiting structural retemperature on the drawings, the costof the clients re protection can bedramatically reduced.
STEP 1
At the Loading Detailsscreen, click onBuilding Type, and the appropriateusage eg. Ofce, Storage, Car Parketc.
CELLBEAM AutoMatethen generatesthe correct partial safety factors forthe re design in accordance with BS5950 Part 8.
STEP
The printout of the subsequent beamdesign will now show the importantre data:
It is extremely helpful to re protectioncompanies if the Engineer shows thekey data on the drawings, ie:

Section factor
The Engineer does not necessarilyspecify the re protection type orthickness.

STEP 1
Enter the number of bays in theXand Ydirections to be considered.
A maximum of 6 x 6 bays may bespecied, although for design onlyfour bays are included in thecalculation, in accordance with P354.
STEP
Select the beam type Cellbeamor USFB.
Tick the Compositebox asappropriate.
Note that importing beams does not
identify the method of design.

STEP 3
Select the number of intermediateSecondary beams.
For Cellular Beams, up to twointermediate beams may be specied.
For USFBs these are assumed on thecolumn line only. All bays are assumedto have identical beam arrangements.
Select the support condition for thebeams, and whether the perimeterbeam supports cladding or not.
Note that edge beams are assumed
similar to internal members in allcases.
STEP 4
Highlight the bay of the beam to beimported in the zone by clicking onone of the beams in that bay.

Select Import dataand import thedata for either a Cellular beam orUSFB.
STEP 6
Copy beam data to the other bays asnecessary by selecting Copy BeamPropertiesand then clicking on thebay to receive the data. Repeat asnecessary.
Additional (Westok and non-Westok)
beams may also be input to other baysby selecting the appropriate teesections and overall depth.
If preferred, the user may input theirown deection criteria, taken from anappropriate design source. It should benoted that this is the deection due todead +10% imposed loading.

Click on the bays in the oppositedirection. Either import the beam dataor enter the section sizes and nishedbeam depth, to the remaining bays.
The internal (not the perimeter) beamshould be selected for a multi-bayarrangement.
Perimeter beams are assumed tobe stiffened by perimeter cladding.Where this is not so, the beam isassumed to be identical to theinternal member.
STEP 8
In the Deck Detailssection checkSlab DetailsandLoading Details. For each, a new window willappear.

Amend the data in theDesign Criteriasection as required.
If known, actual damping values maybe used - otherwise P354 valuesshould be selected.
STEP 10
Click Analyse. The Response Factorfor the critical bay is displayed in anew window.
The designer can interrogatethe plan to obtain theFundamental Frequencyand
Modal Massfor individual bays,by hovering over the bay.
Acceptability for various buildingusages against either BS or SCIguidance are indicated on the table.
Where the oor response shown asinadequate for the proposed usage, the designer may consider the VDVapproach using the SCI Guidancein P354.
