COMMEMORATION OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME 1st

JULY 2016

The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was one of the largest battles of the First World War. Fought between July 1 and November 18, 1916 near the Somme River in France, it was also one of the bloodiest military battles in history. On the first day alone, the British suffered more than 57,000 casualties, and by the end of the campaign the Allies and Central Powers would lose more than 1.5 million men. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916. The memorial also serves as an Anglo-French Battle Memorial in recognition of the joint nature of the 1916 offensive and a small cemetery containing equal numbers of Commonwealth and French graves lies at the foot of the memorial.

On the 1st July 2016 the Wetherby Branch of the Royal British Legion in conjunction with Ward and Town Councillors are organising a commemoration service in St James Church at 11 am. A 2 minutes silence will be held along with a wreath laying ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend this special event.

ANNUAL WETHERBY BIKE RIDE

It's that time of year again, Spring is in the air and people across Yorkshire are oiling their bikes as the weather starts to turn for the better.

Yes……….it’s the 18th annual Wetherby Bike Ride in aid of Cancer Research which will takes place on Sunday June 5th, once again leaving from The Wetherby High School at 10.30 am.

The routes of 20 and 30 miles remain the same, as do the entry fees of £8 for adults, £4.50 for children and £19.50 for a family of four. You are able to enter on the day but there is a slight rise in the cost to £10 for adults, £5.50 for children and £22.50 for a family of four.

ANNUAL TOWN MEETING

The Town Council will be holding the Annual Town Meeting on Thursday 26 May at 7.30pm in the Micklethwaite Room at the Town Hall. It is an opportunity for local residents to meet their councillors and to ask questions and get information about all kinds of issues affecting the town. As well as local Councillors, our Ward Councillors are also usually present. Sadly, the meeting is normally very poorly attended – in fact, there are frequently far more councillors there than residents. This may be because residents are just not interested or perhaps because most people do not know about the meeting, in spite of advertising in the Wetherby News and on Town Council noticeboards. It is a very informal occasion – the Mayor presents a review of the previous 12 months in the town and then residents can ask questions or put forward ideas. The meeting is held in the Town Hall so that it is easily accessible for everyone. We hope that more of you will consider attending this year’s meeting. After all, it is your town and you elect the councillors – why not take the opportunity to come along and find out what is going on locally and what is planned for the future and, more importantly, make your views known. We look forward to seeing you on 26 May.

Wetherby Bowling Club

Wetherby Bowling Club at Grange Park has Flat and Crown Green Bowling, which is rare in this area. We maintain all our gardens and greens ourselves along with playing in Leagues from Monday to Friday. Four afternoons a week we get together for practice, and a cup of tea which is a good social event even if you don’t want to play for a team. We have 6 coaches who give free lessons for 4 weeks for anyone (young or old) and will be flexible in finding a time to suit you. Everybody is very very welcome. We would love to have a Junior or Family Team so if you think you would like to give it a try, please give Lesley Holloran a ring on 0798 5157811.

Directions: From the centre of Wetherby head south on the A661. At the roundabout take the second exit (Boston Road) and after travelling about 0.1 miles turn first left into Old Boston Road (look for sign for Grange Park). This takes you on to a bridge over the A1(M) and after another 0.3 miles turn first right (sign says Grange Park Club) and drive past Wetherby Rugby Club into the car park which is situated between the Bowling Club and Wetherby Cricket Club.

WETHERBY HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Mike Tomlinson’s Visit Inspires Char-ity Initiative from Wetherby High School’s students.

th Mike Tomlin-

son, husband of the renowned charity raiser Jane Tomlinson, visited Wetherby High School. Mike Tom-linson captivated students as he relayed the ex-traordinary experi-ence he and his wife went through. He shared with students the story of his wife’s ex-traordinary journey, who, while dying, raised so much money for charities. What a day, one to remember.

Inspired by the visit Sixth Formers from Tomlinson House (Pictured above with Head of Tomlinson House Mr Nightingale.) set about raising money for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. Students engaged in various events form cycling to cake selling and they raised £1540.60.

WETHERBY STUDENTS JOIN THE WETHERBY LIONS TEAM FROM APRIL 2016 Well done to Wetherby High School students Chloe Wilkinson, Rebecca Hall, Hazel Wright and Zoe Carlton. The public spirited Year 8’s have been selected to help The Wetherby Lions with fundraising initiatives in the local area. The students will be known as ‘Leos’ and they will be involved with charity activities in primary schools and other public events. Chloe Wilkinson said, “We’re delighted to be involved and are looking forward to the challenges ahead.” So, if you see these students around Wetherby with the Lions’ logo you will know why!
