Unity Building, 913 Tracy Avenue VOL. II KANSAS CITA, MO., THURSDAY, NOV. io, 1910 NO. 27 “We’ve All Our Angel Side” The huge, rough stone from out the mine. Unsightly and unfair, Has veins of purest metal hid Beneath the surface there. Few rocks so bare but to their heights Some tiny moss-plant clings. And on the peaks so desolate The sea bird sits and sings. Believe me, too, that rugged souls Beneath the rudeness hide Much that is beautiful and good—- We’ve all our angel side. In all there is an inner depth, A far-off, secret way. Where, through the windows of the soul, God sends his smiling ray; In every human heart there is A faithful, sundry chord That may be struck, unknown to us, By some sweet, loving word. Tbe wayward will in men may try Its softer thoughts to hide; Some unexpected tone reveals It has an angel side. ( Unidentified— Clipped from “Llaho- “In My Name” “If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it.” John 14: 14. It has been assumed that if one ended his prayer with the words, “In Jesus’ name,” or “For Jesus’ sake,” he was ask- ing “in my name” as Jesus meant it. The reader is referred below to numerous Bible texts, as it is thought that the earnest student will be much benefited by study- ing this subject in the “words which the Holy Spirit teacheth.” (I Cor. 2: 13.) In his “name” means in his “nature” or Spirit (Matt. 28:19, B- V.; Acts 1:5; I Cor. 12:13; John 14:26; 15:7; II Peter 1:4), and therefore asking in his “name” means asking from the impulse of the Christ-Spirit within (John 16: 13), not from self, or sense-desires alone. (Janies 4:3.) Tlie Christ-Word within is the Wisdom of God—Divine Understanding (I Cor. 1: 30; 3:19; II Cor. 1: 12;. Prov. 4: 5, 7) —therefore asking from its impulse is to ask wisely; it is subjecting the sense-de- sires to Understanding for interpretation and wise supply. (II Cor. 10: 5.) The Christ-Spirit is Love in the heart (Rom. 5:5; I John 4:7); therefore ask- ing in his “name” is asking as Love prompts (Rom. 13:10; Eph. 1:4), and not that we may “consume it _upon our lusts” (James 4: 3)—“the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.” (I John 2: 16.) The Christ-Spirit within is the “author and finisher of our Faith” (Heb. 12:2; I John 4: 18)—the only Source of true Faith; therefore asking in his “name” is asking in the Faith exercised by Jesus, by his apostles, the prophets, and the “Spirit- filled” of every age. (Gal. 5:6, 22; I John 5:4.) This Faith is the inner “evi- dence” that “Before they call I will an- swer.” (Heb. 11:1; Isa. 65:24; Mark II : 24.) Unity with the Christ-Spirit— i. e., we in it, and it in us (John 14:20; 15:4, 5, 7; 17^ 2 3 ) — is a threefold work, corre- sponding to the trinity of parts -constitut - ing man. The Christ-Word is a trinity fitted to unify with man; the Word (John 1:1, 4, 12, 14) is Spirit and Life (John 6:63), or substance and idea; it is the Spirit of Truth (John 14:6, 17); i. e., Spirit-substance animated by Truth-idea,

“In My Name”“ I f ye shall ask any th ing in my nam e,

I w ill do it.” Jo h n 14: 14.I t has been assum ed th a t if one ended

his p ray e r w ith the w ords, “ In Je su s’ nam e,” or “ F o r Je su s’ sake,” he was asking “ in my nam e” as Jesus m eant it. T he reader is re ferred below to num erous Bible tex ts, as it is thought th a t the earnest student will be much benefited by s tudying th is sub ject in the “ w ords which the H oly S p irit teacheth .” ( I Cor. 2 : 13.)

In his “nam e” means in his “n a tu re” or

S p irit (M att. 2 8 :1 9 , B- V .; Acts 1 :5 ;I Cor. 1 2 :1 3 ; Jo h n 1 4 :2 6 ; 1 5 :7 ; I I P e te r 1 :4 ) , and therefo re asking in his “nam e” means asking from the impulse of the C h ris t-S p irit w ithin (Jo h n 16: 13), not from self, or sense-desires alone. (Jan ie s 4 :3 . )

T lie C hrist-W ord w ithin is the Wisdom of G od— D ivine U nderstand ing ( I Cor. 1: 30 ; 3 :1 9 ; I I Cor. 1: 12;. P rov. 4: 5, 7)— therefo re asking from its impulse is to ask w isely ; it is sub jecting the sense-de- sires to U nderstand ing for in terpretation and wise supply . ( I I Cor. 10: 5.)

T he C h ris t-S p irit is Love in the heart (Rom. 5 :5 ; I Jo h n 4 : 7 ) ; therefore asking in his “nam e” is asking as Love prom pts (Rom . 1 3 :1 0 ; E p h . 1 :4 ) , and not th a t we m ay “consume it _ upon our lu sts” (Jam e s 4 : 3 )— “the lust of the flesh, and the lu st of the eyes, and the pride of life .” ( I Jo h n 2: 16.)

T he C h ris t-S p irit w ithin is the “author and finisher o f our F a ith ” (H eb . 1 2 :2 ; I Jo h n 4 : 18 )— the only Source of true F a ith ; therefo re ask ing in his “nam e” is asking in the F a ith exercised by Jesus, by his apostles, the p rophets, and the “ S pirit- filled” of every age. (G al. 5 :6 , 22; I Jo h n 5 :4 . ) T his F a ith is the inner “evidence” th a t “ B efore they call I will an sw er.” (H eb . 1 1 :1 ; Isa. 6 5 :2 4 ; M arkI I : 24.)

U n ity w ith the C hrist-S p irit— i. e., we in it, and it in us (Jo h n 1 4 :2 0 ; 1 5 :4 , 5, 7 ; 17^ 2 3 )— is a th reefo ld work, corresponding to th e tr in ity of p a rts -constituting man. T he C hrist-W ord is a tr in ity fitted to un ify w ith m an; the W ord (John 1 :1 , 4, 12, 14) is S p irit and L ife (John 6 :6 3 ) , o r substance and idea ; it is the S p irit of T ru th (Jo h n 1 4 :6 , 1 7 ); i. e., S p irit-substance anim ated by T ruth-idea,

and the degree of anim ation determ ines the Pow er m anifest— substance, the an im ating idea, and the consequent pow er, constituting th e tr in ity o f the W ord.

In the first ac t of unification the C hrist- W ord is perceived in the understanding as T ru th (Jo h n 1 4 :6 ) , and believed into. (Jo h n 1 :1 2 ; 6 :4 7 ; M att. 2 8 :1 9 , R. V .; I Cor. 12: 13.) T hen , as the second act, the C hrist-S p irit en ters into our w ill by our loving— infolding— it (Jo h n 14: 2 3 ) ; and we perceive it in the h ea rt as “ Love shed abroad.” (Jo h n 7 :3 9 ; A cts 1 :5 ; 2 : place the th ird act, fo r the C hrist thus in m erses the understand ing and fills the heart— when we believe into the T ru th and by love infold its S p irit— then takes place the th ird act, fo r the C hrist thus in us is the “au tho r” (H eb . 1 2 :2 ) of F a ith in the conscious “ I , ” and m anifests as Power. (G al. 5 : 6 ; M att. 2 8 :1 8 .)

Thus are we “ filled” w ith the H oly S p irit. (A cts 2 :4 , 17, 18; 6 :3 . ) B u t if the W isdom of the understand ing , the Love of the h eart, and the F a ith of the conscious “ I ” is not allow ed to m anifest itself in work ( Isa . 58: 6, 14; M att. 1 1 :5 ; 1 0 :7 , 8 ) , then W isdom , and Love, and F aith , without w orks, a re dead (Jam es 2 :1 7 , 2 6 ; I Cor. 1 3 :1 , 3 )— the C h ris t is shut up , im prisoned in his tem ple. ( I Cor. 3 :1 6 .) N on-dem onstration means C hrist shut out, or C h ris t shu t in. L e t the S avior in (Rev. 3 :2 0 ) — let your L igh t shine (M att. 5 : 16; Jo h n 1 : 4 ) — and thus grow “ unto a perfec t m an, unto the m easure of the sta tu re of the fullness of C h ris t”— “C hrist in you, the hope of g lo ry .” (E p h . 4: 13; Col. 1 :2 7 .) B efore we can ask in

his nam e we m ust en ter into— unify w ith — his nam e. (Jo h n 1 5 :7 .)

T he S ilen t Seventy departm en t of the U nity work, consistent w ith its nam e, is not m aking much noise. B u t it is doing an increasing am ount o f good work. I t has devoted helpers in every section of th is country, and the m em bership in fo reign lands is growing. In sp ir itin g re ports of the good being done come in from all p a rts o f the field, and th is Seventy, like the orig inal one, re tu rn w ith jo y , saying, “L ord , even the demons are sub ject unto us in th y nam e.”
