    Browse LNG Project

    Western Australia

     The Browse liqueed natural gas

(LNG) development, with first gasplanned for 2017, is locatednorthwest of Broome off Western

Australia’s Kimberley coast. It is one of the largest offshore

developments currently beingundertaken worldwide, andencompasses the Calliance,

    Brecknock and Torosagas-condensate fields.

Wood Group Kenny consultantssuccessfully completed theconcept development, basis ofdesign and FEED phases for the

subsea and pipelines design andfor the system flow assurance.Wood Group Kenny consultantsalso performed the steel catenaryrisers (SCRs) FEED in support

of the Aker Solutions designconcept for the Calliance andBrecknock ineld facilities.

     The subsea and pipelines design

work scope included feasibility, concept screening and FEED of

the subsea infrastructure, includingroute selection. Major designchallenges for which solutionswere developed include the routingand on-bottom stability of theexport pipelines through difficultterrain and very onerous metoceanconditions, and the pipeline lateralbuckling mitigation under highfluid temperatures.

    Flow assurance work continued

through all project phases withchallenging solutions required for

    waxy liquids, corrosion issues,

    hydrates, liquid holdup, high

and low temperatures and acomplicated operating envelope. This complex, hydraulically

coupled system is challenging tomodel transiently using traditionaltechniques, and so the Wood

     The Oman Gas Company (OGC)

has managed the integrity of their40 pipelines on paper which hasproved labour intensive, slow andprone to error. They have a vision

of an integrated system thatwould allow the maintenance of

their pipeline system integrity asbefore but recorded, monitored, analysed and planned withina single database that wouldreduce time and cost as wellas minimising error.

    NEXUS Integrity Centre (NEXUS

IC) allows them to apply industry

    standard models, such as

DNV and ASME B31.G, andalgorithms based on their ownexperience into a single system.By analysing in-line inspection

data within NEXUS IC, they can

now combine corrosion ratepredictions and fitness forservice methods to determinethe remaining life of pipelinessubject to active corrosion.

    OGC committed to NEXUS IC

because they saw it’s flexibility, configurability and capabilitywould allow them to improve

    their time, cost and accuracy.

    WGIM has provided continuous

integrity management support toBP’s West of Shetland operations

    since 1997.

    Project support services

    have included:

    • Development and maintenanceof Risk Based Inspection

management strategies for theflexible risers, jumpers, rigidpipelines, and oil offloading lines

    • Development of new inspection, monitoring, and assessmenttechniques to assure integrity

    in these challengingenvironmental regions

    • Management of riser fatiguelife re-assessment programs.

    In particular, WGIM provides an

integrity management frameworkwhich allows BP to manage andmaintain system integrity, whilstalso ensuring that all operationaldata is logged, assessed, andstored should assessment of lifeextension be required.

    Regulatory authorities have

commented that the systematicand diligent approach with whichWGIM personnel have taken to

    maintain the integrity of BP’s

operating systems demonstratesa best in class approach.

    WGIM was contracted by a

North American Operator in 2011to provide technical supportand to facilitate a workshop tosystematically assess the riskprofile of continuing to operate theirflexible pipelines with hydrogen

sulphide (H2S) present in the bore.

     The initial design had not

anticipated sour wells and sosweet service flexible pipes wereinstalled, allowing only a verylimited level of H2S in the bore.In 2010, bore uid composition

indicated that the wells were nowproducing higher than expectedlevels of H2S, and the workshopwas set up to determine a safeand justifiable H2S exposureenvelope for continued production.

     The workshop consisted of various

activities including: a systematicand comprehensive review of theHSE risks; threat identificationindicating failure modes, initiatorsand mechanisms, and potentialconsequences as applicable to

sour service; and the identificationof ongoing measures to validatethe technical integrity of thesystem and reduce risk.

Workshop participants establishedthe maximum H2S operating

threshold to support safeoperations and recommendationswere made for implementation ofcontrols and monitoring measuressuch as improving H2S samplingcapability and establishing controlsto restrict floating vessel excursions.

     The Gorgon Project is developing

    the Greater Gorgon and Jansz

gas fields, located about 130kmand 200km respectively off thenorth-west coast of Western Australia, in what is Australia’slargest ever resources project.

As part of a Wood Group Kennyteam, executing the concept select, concept validation, FEED and

detailed design set of workscopesfrom 2005 through to 2012,WGIM provided ongoing materials

engineering expertise, and hasbeen instrumental in establishinga life-cycle integrity managementplan for Gorgon, with a design-for-integrity focus throughout.

    WGIM’s scope of work included

extensive corrosion modelling, corrosion monitoring assessmentand the development of acorrosion management, reliabilitymanagement and inspectionplan. The work was applied to

the extensive Gorgon upstreamsystem which includes offshore, onshore, and domestic gaspipelines and subsea architecture. Throughout the design, WGIM’s

scope also included materialselection for the production flowlinespools, infield flowlines, manifolds, trees, valves and export pipelines.

WGIM has been an integral part

of a combined Wood GroupKenny, Technip and Chevron

    team executing the FEED and

detailed design scope for thegame changing Gorgon project.

    Materials and Corrosion Based Services

WGIM supports browneld operations with our materials selection,

coating, cathodic protection, chemical selection and fitness-for-serviceassessment expertise. The focus is a clients asset group or a

particular material failure problem. WGIM commonly conducts a site

visit of the assets in question and where relevant, corrosion, coating

and cathodic protection surveys. A failure analysis report, forward

looking corrosion management or integrity management plan aretypical deliverables. Engineering assessments of any anomalies foundby visual survey, NDT (Non Destructive Testing) or intelligent pig survey

are conducted by our engineering team using specialist in-houseassessment software and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) capability.

Risk Based Integrity Management System Development

WGIM uses extensive risk assessment methodology to enable cost

effective and focused integrity management of existing or designphase client assets. Up front risk engineering studies are performed tounderstand the threats and controls related to the assets in question.

Reliability studies are performed to understand equipment, sparing and

maintenance resource criticality. The assessment results are then used

for the basis of development of integrity management strategies, pipelineor facility integrity management plans, IMMR (Inspection, Maintenance,

Monitoring and Repair) plans, reliability plans, performance standards,

written schemes of examination etc. WGIM ensures all requirements

of local legislation and relevant local and international standards areemployed in our best practice IM (Integrity Management) approach.
