CHRISTIE CINEMA PIPE ORGAN Affectionately known as “The Christie”, a 1934-vintage 11 rank cinema pipe organ manufactured by the British Hill Norman and Beard Pipe Organ Company (approx. 1000 pipes) brought to Brisbane in 1969 from the Granada Theatre, Maidstone, England and now installed in the Kelvin Grove State College Theatre. These musical giants, as much orchestra as organ and entirely mechanical including percussion and a sound effects suite, roared into picture theatres across the world. They allowed one skilled musician to conjure up a symphony of sound and provide every necessary musical impression for breathing life into silent films and the popular music of the day. The Christie, England’s answer to the marvellous American Wurlitzer, provided luxurious 1930’s cinemas with their own sophisticated musical identity after the silent era ended.

Thérèse Raquin Modern-day gothic soap opera Wednesday 21 June, 7.30pm Thursday 22 June, 11am & 7.30pm Gardens Theatre, QUT Gardens Point gardenstheatre.qut.edu.au Adapted from Emile Zola’s gothic French horror, Thérèse Raquin is the kind of pure, bodice-ripping psychological drama rarely experienced live on stage: a twisted tale of forced oppression, misogyny, forbidden love, and

corrupted morals set in the backstreets of 19th century Paris, the city of love. Forced into a loveless arranged marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille, Thérèse is desperate to escape her hopeless future. When Camille introduces Thérèse to an old friend, Laurent, he unwittingly sets in motion a passionate and feverish affair between the two, and, ultimately, his own tragic demise. A rollercoaster of emotions featuring sumptuous period costumes and an original score by Christopher De Groot, this critically acclaimed Australian production examines what happens when you’re prepared to risk it all.

The Woman in BlackJune 10 – July 15Brisbane Arts Theatreartstheatre.com.auSusan Hill’s acclaimed gothic ghost story comes alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation. The Woman in Black is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror. A lawyer, obsessed with a curse he believes has been cast over him by the ‘woman in black’, engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough,

The Forwards By Stefo Nantsou Presented by Brisbane Powerhouse, Shock Therapy Productions and Zeal Theatre Wed 14 – Sat 24 JuneVisy Theatre, Brisbane Powerhouse brisbanepowerhouse.org Don’t pass up The Forwards this July at the Powerhouse, a raw physical theatre experience about footy, friendship and reckless behaviour. Following a series of successful shows on the Gold Coast as part of Bleach* Festival in April, The Forwards is coming to Brisbane by popular demand for eight shows only. No strangers to the Brisbane

but as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of abject terror. Director, John Boyce explains the concept of a play within a play and the extraordinary all-encompassing theatrical effects which increase as the story unfolds, challenging the audience to decipher what is imagined or what is terrifyingly real.  “The most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter” Daily Telegraph (UK).

Powerhouse, Shock Therapy Productions is returning to the Visy Theatre after their Matilda award-winning season of The Pillowman in 2015. Written by Stefo Nantsou, director and founder of internationally renowned Zeal Theatre, and performed by multi-award winning company Shock Therapy Productions, The Forwards follows the story of a small town called Pintoon where nothing ever happens – except the footy. The town is buzzing as the local team, the Pintoon Parrots, finally make it to the Grand Final under the steam of their three star forwards – Rabbit, Hoges and Tractor. In the lead up to the game, the entire town

unites to party hard and celebrate, but tensions boil over in the build up to the big game. The dream team of goal kickers is challenged by a vicious cocktail of grog and jealousy as mateship gives way to anger and violence, leading to some devastating repercussions.
