WESLEY COLLEGE CHAPEL
The Chairperson of the Wesley College Trust Board, Rev Diana Tana has made the
following statement regarding the Chapel.
The Wesley College Trust Board has undertaken a seismic survey of the College to
fulfil its duty of care for the safety of Staff and Students at Wesley College.
The seismic survey has highlighted very clearly that the College Chapel has a Rating
of 15% which is significantly below the 34% New Building Standard ( NBS ) required
by the Ministry of Education for regular use of the building.
Unfortunately, due to this Rating the Trust Board has had no option but to close the
Chapel until such time that it can be strengthened.
The Trust Board has agreed that the Wesley College Chapel is an important icon for the College and its
Community and the preservation of this building for the future is crucial.
The strengthening of the College Chapel will occur when Funds allow.
NCEA MATTERS – A FOCUS ON LIFTING YEAR 11 ACHIEVEMENT
A number of initiatives have been taken this year to raise the expectations of Year
11 students as they work towards NCEA Level 1 with the intention of lifting the
number of students who achieve NCEA Level 1 in their Year 11 year.
Subject courses were designed so that all students would be offered the
opportunity to achieve one standard in each subject during term 1.
This focus has achieved the desired result. I congratulate the many students have
achieved 20credits.
There are 80 Year 11 students and as of today the average number of credits
achieved per student is 14. Another positive outcome is that 9 students have already achieved the literacy
requirement (10 literacy credits) and 7 the numeracy requirement (10 numeracy credits).
The requirements to achieve NCEA Level 1 are that a student achieves 80 credits including 10 literacy and 10
numeracy credits.
STAFFING
At the end of term 1 we farewelled Ms Hana Wijohn and thanked her for her service to Wesley College. As HOD
Maori Ms Wijohn had been supportive of the Kapa Haka group and various sports, including Basketball.
This term her teaching programme is being managed by Long Term Reliever Mr Matiaha Martin.
Mr Kipa Rangiheuea has been appointed as HOD Maori from the start of term 3. Mr Rangiheuea is currently HOD
Maori at Glenfield College. Mr Rangiheuea’s family has strong links with Wesley College as two of his older
brothers were former pupils. An announcement will be made about the date of a powhiri for Mr Rangiheuea later.
QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY EXEAT
Queen’s Birthday will be an extra long weekend home for students. Students may leave after school on Friday for
the weekend. Boarder’s return by 5pm, Tuesday 3 June and day students by 8.30am, Wednesday 4 June to

170th REUNION DATE CHANGE
The Wesley College Old Students Association has considered the effect that the announcement of 20 September
2014 as the date of the New Zealand General Election may have on the planned 170th Celebration and has decided
to hold this important event in the life of Wesley College one week earlier.
The 170th Reunion will be held over the weekend of 13-14 September 2014.
This is the closest available weekend to the Land Grant made to Rev. W Lawry Superintendent of the Wesleyan
Mission on 4 October 1844 that allowed for the Wesleyan Native Institution to be founded.
