TRANSCRIPT
Monday 22nd July, 2013
Welcome back to term 3 and the beginning of yet another very hectic
term. Included in this term’s school events are: Education Week,
Swim School, OC Testing, Stage 2 camp, Primary Athletics Carnival,
Winter PSSA finals, the book fair and the mini-fete. And that’s just
the start of it!
During the holidays most of the air conditioners were installed. With
just a few more to be finished off, classes now have a warm,
comfortable room just in time for winter. The air conditioners are
reverse cycle so they will be very welcome in summer as well. A huge
thank you to our amazing P&C for funding the air conditioners. They
are fabulous.
This term a number of new initiatives will commence at our school.
Community workshops include Monday and Friday cooking classes,
and a cake decorating class on Tuesdays. On Tuesdays for the rest of
the year, Alison Windsor, an actor and drama teacher from The Song
Room, will be working with the Year 5 and 6 classes. Alison will also
be working with us as we prepare for our MADD concert later in the
year. The senior classes will also be involved in Fast Forward, a
program designed by staff at the University of Western Sydney, to
help young people aspire towards completing their HSC and taking up
tertiary studies.

A Message from Mrs Polios
Last Monday, during our Staff Development

around the Aboriginal Education policy and
also the new English syllabus.
We’ve had a great start to Term 3 and it
promises to be another fantastic term which
will no doubt be busy but will certainly be
engaging! Students are already working hard in classrooms.
Welcome to Mr Boyd who has replaced Mrs Preece as the teacher of
2P for the remainder of the year.

planned. Remember, that you can also check the calendar on our
website at www.whalan-p.schools.nsw.edu.au
Tomorrow we will hold our second parent session about mathematics

It’s Winter – mornings are cold and we get lots of rainy days too

The Song Room Drama Program
Whalan Primary School has welcomed The Song
Room for a Drama program in semester two.
The Song Room is a national organisation that
delivers tailored, high-quality creative arts in
partnerships with schools.
Song Room Teaching Artist, Alison Windsor is a
drama specialist who will be working with stage 3 students and
teachers each Tuesday.
If you’d like more information about The Song Room, you can visit
www.songroom.org.au.
If you see Alison around Whalan Public, don’t hesitate to say hello.
“Twilight Tales”
Every classroom in our school has a big tub of books filled with
“Twilight Tales”. Students can borrow one book at
a time to take home and enjoy reading with their
families. Curling up with a good book is a great way
to spend a cold, wintry evening!
When the book is returned, another one can be borrowed. A record
of who borrows each book is kept in the classroom.
“Twilight Tales” books have a white label wrapped
around the spine with the TT logo on it and the
Whalan Public School stamp inside the book.
In Library lessons this term, classes will be looking at and
reading the books that have been selected by The
Children’s Book Council of Australia as the most
outstanding books for 2013. They will have opportunities to take
part in a variety of activities in the lead up to Book Week in Week 6.
Overdue Library Books
Our students at Whalan are always very enthusiastic about
borrowing library books but many are forgetting to return them!
Over the next two weeks overdue notices will be sent home.
These books belong to the school community and need to be
returned so other children can also enjoy reading them with their
families.
School library books are stamped with the Whalan Public School
stamp, have a coloured label wrapped around the spine, a sticker
on the back with a library call number and another sticker with
a computer barcode.
Congratulations to 5/6M! Miss Makin’s class
returned the most Library books at the end of
Term 2 and had Freddo Frogs as a treat.

ATTENTION PARENTS:
Cyber bullying is a big problem
Cyber bullying is when someone gets bullied on the internet. It can
come in many types like harassment, stalking or making up lies about
people.
The consequences of cyber bullying
Cyber bullying has many consequences. If your child gets cyber
bullied on Edmodo or the student email, your child could become sad
or depressed and not want to come to school. At our school, we take
cyber bullying seriously. If your child is being cyber bullied at school,
please tell them to report.
How cyber bullying can be stopped:
If your child is cyber bullying others, you should:
· Delete the messages your child is sending
· If it’s happening on Facebook or another website, remove their
account or
· Ban them from the devices they are sending the messages from
If your child is being cyber bullied, you should:
· Reassure your child and
· Inform the school

SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Here is just one of the magnificent sustainable homes that students in
Stage 3 designed last term.
Taiese’s home draws energy from the sun and the wind. It boasts solar
panels and a wind turbine. Complete with water tanks that catch
rainwater, it can provide water for gardens which produce an array of
vegetables.
