From the PrincipaLDear Parents and Friends,

This is just one of those weeks when I stand back and say ‘wow’! With every passing week, I realise more and more what a privilege it is to serve the BSB family as your Principal. In just this week, I have had the most difficult task since I joined the school in judging the Photography competition – I have no idea what the standard has been like in previous years, but this year it has been genuinely awesome. Please don’t blame me if I got it wrong! From the youngest (Pre-nursery) to the oldest (I won’t say who!), the care, attention to detail and simple joy of the photos on display has really brightened the foyer. On Monday, we appointed our School Headboy and Headgirl, and their deputies, who will work with their team of prefects to bring about true student leadership in the school; I told them they are part of my team and I really look forward to working with them closely as we develop BSB in partnership. On Tuesday, I met with our Sixth Form Student Common Room Committee, who presented me with their ideas for improving their study facilities; these were stunning, and we have already engaged our architects to formalise these into a firm plan. We have then, today, seen two performances of the Year 6 production – Olivia – which was a fantastic achievement. It would have been stunning if they had had the whole term to prepare, but to pull it off in four weeks or so is nothing short of miraculous. My thanks to the Year 6 children and their teachers for giving us all such an inspiring and fun afternoon and evening.

And then, as I write, I am being constantly distracted by the laughter and buzz as parents set up their stands for International Day. The school is completely taken over with the colour, the sights, and the sounds of our 60-odd nationalities and I can’t wait for tomorrow as these are complemented by the parade and then the activities for the students. I simply cannot thank enough the PA, and all the scores of parents who have taken so much time and trouble to celebrate the truly international nature of our community.

In the secondary school, everyone’s minds are now turning to next week’s residentials. So much hard work has gone into organising these, and I know that they will be a highlight of the year for many students. I wish them safe journeys and a brilliant week of adventure and learning in a different environment. I would really appreciate any feedback from parents about the programme after students return, as this is something we want to develop further next year.

On a different and more sober note, we are obviously now entering the time of year when pollution becomes even more of a worry. Some of you attended the excellent talk at school on Thursday morning by Dr Mijke Vankan, an ER Physician at OASIS hospital here in Beijing, which really helped to set Beijing pollution in context. However, I recognise that this is the most serious anxiety for the vast majority of families and I am working very closely with the Executive Committee of Nord Anglia Education to continually improve our protection measures on our building facilities. Your child’s (and my own child’s) safety and well-being are my number one priority and I will pursue this to the absolute utmost of my ability.

Last week I had to attend the annual conference of Principals from across the Nord Anglia family. We are all fortunate to work in amazing schools, and the conference was extremely productive; but I have to say, in all honesty, I really missed being here and it was great to come back to school on Monday and engage once again with our wonderful students. I believe we have made great progress already in our quest for real school improvement but the journey has only just begun.

With very best wishes

EARN A SWIMMING BADGE The PE Department is offering students the opportunity to earn Swimming Badges that recognise the ability to swim certain distances non-stop in the pool. It is the same badge that is offered to students in the UK. Pictured is the badge and accompanying certificate for 600m (as an example). Distances start at 5m and go up to 2000m.

Swimming is part of the PE curriculum at BSB and this is an excellent way to encourage your child to reach a goal in their swimming. Please discuss this opportunity with your child and contact the PE Department for further information.

what a day!International Day was celebrated at BSB today (Friday) and what a day it was! The Parade of Nations featured 58 nationalities and there were 30 table displays throughout the school offering a range of information and food from the countries that make up the BSB family.

It was a fun and very informative day for all involved, but most of all for the children. Students were given a quiz to complete, ate an amazing array of food and could also join in dancing and fun performances with the parents.

The International Day Photography Competition drew an excellent response and some amazing photos were entered. Results of the competition and winning photos will be published in next week’s BSB Connect newsletter.

International Day was organised by the Parents’ Association and many hours were put in by volunteer parents to create the fabulous displays. Thank you to all the parents who made this a wonderful day for our children.

From the Head of Primary Dear Parents,

It seems like winter is creeping up on us with the mornings feeling decidedly chillier than last week. This has not deterred the children at all and the week has been as active and lively as ever.

The week began with the settling in reports being sent home to parents on Monday. These are intended to advise you of how well your child has settled into their new year group, as well as personal, social and learning skills being developed. These will be shortly followed by parents evening on Monday 21st where parents will have the opportunity to discuss the report and your child in general with your class teacher and the specialist teachers. Thank you to all parents who have offered feedback in the space provided on the report letter, this is always valued and used to reflect upon how we can make further improvements.

Wednesday was a day of sports and culture! The field was the site of this years first Key Stage one competitive event with BSB hosting a football competition between ourselves and three other schools, entering 8 teams in total. It was a great event and the children all competed brilliantly, demonstrating great sportsmanship and manners. The year 4 children spent the day engrossed in culture, visiting the Mosque and eating delicious Arabian food. This was to give them further insight into their topic of the Muslim explorer Ibn Batuta and offer them a chance to consolidate what they had learnt and ask questions to further their learning.

Yesterday was the big day for Year 6 with them performing their production ‘Olivia’ twice in front of an audience. The songs were great, the acting excellent and the performance was polished. Very well done to you all, you were true superstars.

And finally, International day was upon us! With stalls and representatives from countries all over the World this was another spectacle at BSB that will go down as one of the greats. With a Lion dance to begin the parade, the flags of so many countries being held proudly aloft it was a sea of colour but also a true show of how multicultural and diverse our student body is. The parents association and all the volunteers had done a fantastic job in getting the stalls ready and the communal areas decked out with information and traditional items from the respective countries. A huge thank you to all the volunteers, the parents association and the parents who painted faces, dug out traditional dress and came along to share the fun. It was a brilliant day and one, as a community, we can feel very proud of.

Have a lovely weekend,

Christian Bishop

This week Teddies explored how food changes by making toast while Reception dug up some dinosaur bones!

FOUNDATION STAGE - toast, autumn and dinosaursFoundation stage are all taking part in activities linked to the theme of change. Teddies children have been exploring how food changes when its cooked. We have tasted some soft, white bread and then made some hot, cruncy toast in the toaster. This was also a great opportunity to develop our fine motor skills as we used a knife to spead the butter and the marmalade and to cut the toast into squares and triangles. Nursery children have begun looking at seasonal changes as the weather changes. They have been collecting fallen leaves so they can decorate their classroom with an autumnal theme. Reception have had a roaring time learning all about dinosaurs! We have been archaeologists finding fossils in the sand and counting them. We have been singing lots of stomping dinosaur songs, making dinosaur masks, and designing our own dinosaurs on paper and then making them using clay.

On Friday Foundation Stage enjoyed a wonderful International Day. They paraded in all their glorious colours and costumes and were able to travel the world, visiting a different country in every classroom!

key stage one - thank you to our parentsWhat a busy week it has been in Year2! This week in maths, we started our measuring unit. We have been using our estimating skills to try and guess how long the objects were from around our class. We used cubes as our measuring tool. Some of us even tried to measure ourselves! In our English lessons, we have continued with our author focus, Julia Donaldson. We have been using her story ‘A squash and a squeeze’ to help us understand what rhyming words and adjectives are.

We had a great time on International Day! Some children came into school in their national dress, some in their sports kit and some came in wearing the colours of their flag. The Year 2 corridors were bright and colourful to say the least! It was great to see such a variety of food in our classrooms and we thoroughly enjoyed tasting the different flavours. A big thank you to all of the parents for the kind donations, your support has been fantastic!

Year 2 used cubes as measuring tools this week, with some students deciding to measure themselves.

head of primary for a dayLast week BSB Connect reported that the Primary School had a new Principal.... for a day. Year 3 student Harriet Strand took over the role from Mr Bishop and here is her report from the day. Well done Harriet!

Friday 10th October

I came into school at 8:30 and shook hands with Mr. Bishop and we went through and agreed my itinerary for the day and collected my badge. Then we met Miss Chaplin to agree the music and musicians for the following week. I chose my sister, Charlotte, who plays the piano really well, to play in next week’s assembly.

I went for coffee and muffins with Mrs. Lamb and Ms. Lebihan at chatterbox before going to introduce year 5GS assembly about Oliver Twist. After Year 5 assembly it was playtime, which I still had time to play with my friends and tell them all that I had done in the morning.

After break I met Kevin, BSB Head Chef, to discuss the menu for next week and agreed a special ‘Pie Day’ that will be Chicken Pie & Mash and Apple Pie for desert. I hope everyone likes it! I then attended spotted assembly with Nursery and listened to the story Smartest Giant in Town with them.

Before lunch I had duty with Teddies and then I had lunch with my friends. After lunch I met admissions and talked about what they do when they have prospective families.

I heard members of class from Year 1RT read, who were all really good. Then I had spotted assembly with Reception and then went around the school and checked everyone’s uniform and gave our marble awards.

Towards the end of the day I met with Mr. Bishop to choose new student reward stickers. I chose some for gentle hands and some for when you had an injury and did not cry.

At the end of my day I had bus duty to make sure everyone went on the right bus and got home safely. Then I went home.

I really enjoyed being Head of Primary for the day and wanted especially thank Mr. Bishop, Ms. Lebihan and Mrs. Lamb for organizing such a fab day!

key stage two - drama and reporting skillsIt has been a fantastic but very busy week in Year 6. There has been much excitement as we have put together the final touches to our production. The show is based on the story of Oliver Twist and other Victorian characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Scrooge also join in. Children have performed and practised in costumes and we have been impressed by the high levels of acting, speaking and singing. Performances took place on Wednesday and Thursday and were a great experience for the children.

Away from the performance, Year 6 have started to look in more depth into journalistic writing in literacy and particularly enjoyed looking at TV news reports. This will give them a firm foundation for when they write their own articles later in the term.

More photos of the Year 6 production of Olivia! are on the next page and in our photo gallery on the website.

GERMAN PRIMARY - Harvest FestivalLast Thursday the traditional German Harvest Festival “Erntedank” was celebrated at the German Primary School. The students enjoyed this festival of thankfulness with all their senses.

During a contemplative ceremony in the theatre, the children decorated the altar festively with fresh fruit, vegetables, chestnuts and pumpkins. A thoughtful story, told by Mrs. Dünnebier, reminded the children that not everyone has the chance to sit at a richly set table and to be thankful for the traditional harvest of food.

After this beautiful ceremony, the students gathered around a table to share their harvest gifts. To their great delight, they were allowed to cut the fruit into chunks and enjoy it together with tasty pancakes.

Further highlights for the kids were an exciting quiz about the harvest festival and the creative design of colorful posters.

The thoroughly successful ceremony was a great pleasure for the students and teachers. Thanks to all the parents for their support and for helping us to make the day a special memory for the children. From Julia Wegener, 4. Klasse teacher

Note from Christine Riedl, Head of German Primary.

Thank you to all the mothers who shared their time with us, helping to prepare the pancakes, cutting the fruit, etc. You all made it a truly great and memorable event. I would also like to thank Mrs Dünnebier who had all these great ideas for that day.

And lastly, I am so proud of our children who behaved brilliantly on that special occasion! Well done to all of you!

From the Head of SECONDARY Dear Parents,

The big event of this week has been the election of our Head Boy and Head Girl for the next academic year. I am pleased to tell you that Art Tian and Samantha Raadwijk have been elected by the students to this office. They are both outstanding and mature members of our community, and on behalf of the staff I can say that we are very much looking forward to working with them. I know that they have a great deal to offer our school, and I am sure that they will benefit from the experience too. Erik Mumolo and Tanya Valdez were elected as Deputy Head boy and Girl, in what was a very close run competition.

Our 6th form common room committee met with the Principal and I on Tuesday. They presented us with a detailed plan for the refurbishment of the current common room. We were impressed with the level of thought that had clearly gone into their proposal, so much so in fact that we are shortly meeting with our Premises Officer and Architect to draw up some plans.

It is obvious to me that the 6th Form students are a mature and articulate group, and so I was not totally surprised when they raised the issue of a lunch pass to enable them to leave the school premises to take lunch elsewhere. This is a common privilege in most schools in my experience, and as they are some of our most trusted and sensible young men and women, I see no reason why we should not extend it to BSB. Parents would of course be able to opt out if the wanted to, and like all privileges, it can be withdrawn if abused. My initial survey of parents indicates that most are in favour of this, and so it seems highly likely that we shall implement the lunch time pass system in the weeks following the residential trips. Parents will receive the appropriate consent form, and then, upon receipt of that form students will be issued with a pass.

The vast majority of students will be away next week on residential trips through China. I am sure they, and the staff who are with them, will have a wonderful time. You will be able to receive brief updates from the various trips on our web site. Please be aware that in some areas, under certain conditions, contact with the groups may be difficult, so updates may not appear every day, however, staff will do their very best to keep you informed. I am sure we will see some photos from these trips in the next newsletter!

Best wishes,

Steve Lewis

bsb inspires student leadershipStudent Leadership is now central to the philosophy of The British School of Beijing, Shunyi and it was celebrated in a big way this week with the announcement of the Head Girl and Head Boy in the Secondary School.

Year 13 students Samantha Raadwijk and Art Tian were both elected to their leadership roles of Head Girl and Head Boy following speeches and a ballot involving the whole of Secondary School. Tanya Valdez and Erik Mumolo were elected as their Deputies.

This follows on from an excellent turnout of candidates for the role of Prefects with 19 students being selected as Prefects for the 2013/2014 school year.

Newly-elected Head Girl Samantha Raadwijk has been a student at The British School of Beijing for seven years. She said the school had given her so many great opportunities and had inspired her to do and accomplish more.

“As Head Girl I want to encourage every student to make the most of the opportunities given to them,” Samantha said.

Art Tian, a student at BSB since 2010, acknowledged the support given to him by the Principal and teachers.

“Now this is my opportunity to contribute back to the school and give that support to them,” he said.

Tanya Valdez said for her it was about school spirit and looking out for ways to foster that spirit. “We want to make everyone proud about being at BSB,” she said.

Erik Mumolo also acknowledged the value the role had for the future. “If we do a good job, it will be recognised by others. It is definitely something for the CV,” he said.

The students will have the opportunity throughout the year to represent the views of their peers to the teachers and the Principal as well as help mentor other younger students. They will also represent the school at external events.

Members of BSB’s newly-elected student leadership team, pictured here in Chatterbox Cafe, are (L-R) Erik Mumolo, Tanya Valdez, Samantha Raadwijk and Art Tian.

NEWS AND RESOURCES FROM SECONDARY MANDARINSecondary Mandarin is pleased to announce that all secondary students will be given the opportunity this year to sit the HSK test (Chinese Proficiency test).

Students can opt to sit the externally assessed one or the one internally assessed at BSB. In both cases our students’ level of Chinese will be compared against international standards.

The HSK consists of six levels, namely the HSK (level I), HSK (level II), HSK (level III), HSK (level IV), HSK (level V), and HSK (level VI). To make sure our internal setting and assessment methods fits the HSK criteria, sets in Secondary Mandarin are now organised from Beginners to Native as follows: Set ½, Set 2/3, Set3/4, Set 4/5, Set 5/6. Parents will soon receive a letter from their child’s Mandarin teacher about the details of the test.

Upcoming Trips:

Ms Song and Ms Hua organised a fantastic trip to enhance the students’ opportunity to learn Chinese with hands-on experiences.

Students in the AS course will visit several places in Beijing on November 7th and carry out specific tasks linked to the topics there are learning. More details will follow shortly through a letter to the parents.

FIRST BATTLE OF THE YEARThe Excellent Readers groups in years 8 and 9 visited Dulwich College on Monday for the first of four Battle of the Books of this year. They have been preparing carefully for the event through reading, discussion and creating ques-tions. The books that were read for Monday’s competition included RJ Palcio’s very popular Wonder, Carl Hiassen’s Chomp, Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead, Hero on a Bicycle by Shirley Hughes, the classic book The Outsiders by SE Hinton and this year’s winner of the Newberry medal The One and Only Ivan.

Both teams had a few hiccups to begin with but picked up in later rounds with the Team 2 getting full marks in the last round. However, team A excelled and were able to get 3rd place, missing out on second by only 2 points. There was also time for a few cakes and drinks and to chat about the books with teams from other schools. The next event will take place in January.

Extra special thanks go to our librarian Archana Mahajan who has been a core member of the Battle of the Books organisation team for several years and helped to keep BSB as part of the competition. This was her last event as she will be leaving us later this term so we would all like to say thank you for her time and dedication and wish her all the best for the future.

WATERING THE FLOWERS OF OUR IMAGINATION!This week has been BSB Secondary Poetry Week where students have been encouraged to read, listen to, share and create all sorts of poems.

This year’s theme “water” linked in with the UK National Poetry Day theme, as well as the current Global Classroom project and the United Nation’s 2013 year of Water co-operation.

In form time, students were shown and discussed a series of quotations from the Koran to Bruce Lee relating to the important role water plays in our lives.

These were mixed with images from photographer Edward Burntynsky’s project of uses of water and accompanied by music made from instruments made entirely of ice! They have also watched poems from around the world throughout the week.

In English classes, students have worked through a series of poetry related activities which will result in at least one complete poem to be submitted to the KS3 poetry competition and a whole bloom of jellyfish inspired poems which will appear somewhere around the school over the next few weeks.

We hope these events have increased students’ interest in and enjoyment of poetry and other creative uses of language and that parents will continue to encourage their children to take an interest in poetry. Secondary English students delved into poetry this

week, the theme being “water”.

Key Stage 1 Football Invitational at BSB

On Tuesday 15th October BSB hosted the first ever Key Stage 1 Football tournament, inviting three other schools to join us. These schools were Harrow International, Springboard Bilingual International School and ACI.

Each of the schools had two teams to play and represent them. Students played games of 8 minutes in the group stages before the playoffs for 1st and 2nd place and then 3rd and 4th place.

The BSB teams started off with draws but quickly progressed to two 1-0 wins in the second matches. The more matches that they played the better the play on the field.

Students had great fun during the afternoon and gave their all. BSB finished 3rd overall winning the first trophy for Key Stage 1.

Go Bears!
