”It’s a ‘Triple-A-programme’: Flying is attractive, the captains are authentic and the content is highly applicable.“

“The workshop provides an excellent balance between theory and real life.”

Learning from flight captains

Using the Capitum flight simulation programme to address the following topics – details

Decision-making

Intuitive decision-making: Understand the advantages and limitations of intuition – avoid

decision-making traps and biases

Structured decision-making: Apply a structured decision-making procedure to avoid making

rash decisions (e.g.: FORDEC, a method applied by pilots)

Risk management: Improve capability to accept and handle reasonable risks

Collaboration

Team management: Empower the team to deliver maximum performance, even under time

pressure and in adverse conditions

Hierarchy: Be aware of the benefits of collaboration across hierarchical boundaries

Shared decision-making: Be aware of your individual limitations in challenging situations and

of the benefits of a team

Communication

Prioritise: Separate relevant from non-relevant information under time pressure

Assumptions: Challenge basic assumptions and encourage team members to speak up

Feedback: Accept feedback from others and give constructive feedback

Concerns: Voice concerns and listen to concerns of others

Leadership

Put innovation first: Think differently and look for several possible solutions – then evaluate

them

Failure management: Admit errors and reverse decisions if necessary

Shared Mental Model: Define clear and mutually agreed targets and align the team around

them

Learning from flight captains

Participants flythe aircraft

The participants (cockpit

crews) fly the aircraft by using

the Capitum flight software.

Team management & decision-making

scenarios

The crews will be faced with

different scenarios and

decision-making dilemmas that

they have to resolve.

Debriefing

Based on the observation of

the coaches/captains during

the simulation and data from

the flight recorder

The participants fly the aircraft

In realistic flight simulations participants become pilots, facing authentic challenges

Learning approach

Action learning The methodology follows the experiential learning cycle. Each

experience is followed by a debriefing and reflection session.

Simulations

During the flight simulations the participants learn how to apply proven

techniques for decision-making, communication and team management.

A realistic flight scenario is a challenge even for the toughest manager.

The simulations will be conducted with the Capitum flight simulation

software.

Reflection

The debriefing and reflection sessions are the cornerstones of the

workshop. Participants receive a systematic review and analysis of their

team and individual performance during the simulations from the flight

captains and coaches.

Transfer

Concise presentations and real cases explain the importance of non-

technical skills as the main parallel between the cockpit and

management and provide an insight into decision-making methods in

the cockpit.

FacultyThe programme is conducted by commercial flight captains and

management coaches. The flight captains fly commercial aircrafts and

are Senior Examiners on behalf of the Civil Aviation Authorities.

“I have rarely taken part in a workshop that has brought so many valuable insights in such a short space of time.“

“A professionally conducted workshop with a high input-output ratio.“

“The workshop provides an excellent balance between theory and real life.“
