Mission Statement:
“The Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce works to represent and advance the Oak Lawn business com-
munity, striving with constant integrity, fairness and cooperation to promote and improve the eco-
nomic atmosphere, business climate and image of Oak Lawn.”
What Can The Chamber’s New Website
Do For You and Your Business.
The new website offers a new avenue of marketing opportunity at
no cost. It is an online extension of our great in-person communi-
ty, and similarly requires some participation to maximize your
online profile.
Claiming your account has a few key benefits. Most importantly,
it empowers you to maintain your profile, including the ability to
update your contact information, as well as add your logo, post
your store hours, and link to your website, Facebook, or LinkedIn
pages. You can also add images, create a slide show, or even in-
clude a video. You can also add your own events to the calendar,
post blog entries, and more. Some features will not display your
business until you upload your logo and verify your profile.
This week, a few more updates to the site will be going live. You
will be able to RSVP for events, pay your membership dues
online, participate in online discussions, and more! Over the
coming months, there are some other exciting updates sched-
uled; but more about that later. For now, in order to access the
current features, and the upcoming ones, you will need to claim
your business.
The open support window for existing members is soon closing,
so please be sure to claim your profile now to maximize your in-
vestment, in addition to your exposure to the community.
Thank you for your interest, and please feel free to contact me
directly if you have any issues.

President’s Message
“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you
do it.” – Simon Sinek
If you have 18 minutes and 4 seconds to spare,
watch Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk, “How Great Lead-
ers Inspire Action.” (You can Google it) I was
introduced to Simon’s business ideology a few
years ago and quickly adopted it for myself. In
this video he talks about the Golden Circle and it
will change your thinking.
The basic premise is that as business owners or non-profit executives,
we spend more time focused on the “what” in terms of what we do,
instead of where we should be focused… on the “why.” It’s actually
not that difficult of a transition to make.
Let’s say, for example, that you are in the insurance business. Sure you
sell home, life and auto and most other insurance agents in the area do.
Every agent says “You’ll get the best service with us.” With those
things being equal, it tends to push people towards looking at and com-
paring prices, and often making the final decision based on price alone.
But, what if you changed that conversation to get people not thinking
about price, but value? What if you communicated to people why you
decided to become an insurance agent? What if you communicated your
core beliefs (your “why”) and how the company you represent aligns
with your core beliefs?
What might applying the Golden Circle to the Oak Lawn Chamber of
Commerce look like? It would start with our mission, our why: “The
Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce works to represent and advance its
business community, striving with constant integrity, fairness and coop-
eration to promote and improve the economic atmosphere, business
climate and image of Oak Lawn.”
Then the how: “We do this by addressing a myriad of issues that could
impact your business and by creating opportunities for businesses con-
nections through the ‘Shop Oak Lawn’ campaign, vendor fairs, and a
multitude of networking events.”
Finally the what: “One of those opportunities is the upcoming Cham-
ber Golf Outing, would you like to learn how you can get involved?”
Watch the video and let me know what you think.
