What do you see in this picture?

What do you see in this picture?
A sinking ship and danger or HOPE that there is an island in sight – it’s not what you see, it’s HOW you see it!
There are different ways of thinking about situations in life
– as mostly positive or as mostly negative.
What is positivity?
Positivity means thinking in an optimistic way, looking for solutions, expecting good results and success, and focusing on making life happier.
Positivity means a hopeful and confident frame of mind.
Positivity is not something you are – it's something you do!
Which means we can ALL have the power of positivity!
But can negative thoughts and attitude be contagious ?
It’s really important that we think about what we read / what we listen to so that we aren’t allowing ourselves to be surrounded by negativity! This is something we’ll think more about in September too!
Think of 3 words that you think people would use to describe you (this could be
a friend, parent/carer, teacher)…
Do any of these words influence your behaviour?
Do you think you ever behaviour / act differently because of how you think people see you?
Keep your thoughts about those questions in your mind as you watch
two very short clips from the film ‘Finding Nemo’ that hopefully many of
you will be familiar with...
In the first clip we saw how Nemo had grown up being told that he couldn’t do lots of things due to his injured fin and so shouldn’t try. Hearing these sorts of things for many
years had made Nemo start to believe that they were true - he doubted himself and was afraid of trying lots of new things!
However, in the second clip (taken from towards the end of the film) we see Nemo feeling much braver and more determined after hearing about how his Dad has battled to come and rescue him - hearing all of this positivity and how his Dad had learned to believe in
himself led to Nemo believing in his own abilities. He was then able to put this into action and just as the clip ends was about to help save all the other fish in the tank!
As I said in my video message at the start this links into a famous piece of research known as the ‘Pygmalion Effect’...
What other people think or believe about us influences the way they act towards us…(In the first clip Nemo’s Dad believed that Nemo couldn’t do lots of things so he was very protective and stopped him from trying. However in the second clip everyone believed in both Nemo and his Dad’s bravery and openly shared this)
Over time this can change our beliefs about ourselves, which can then influence our actions / how we behave… (Nemo had started to believe that he wasn’t capable of lots of things so was scared to try! However, this completely changed in the second clip and he was able to demonstrate his bravery!)
So what does this mean for US in school?
“We have unapologetically high standards”We know that YOU are AMAZING and whilst you are on your journey with us at Blatch we will continue to BELIEVE IN YOU AND ACTIVELY SHOW OUR BELIEF IN YOU by supporting, encouraging and challenging
you in developing a determined work ethic, resilience and responsibility for creating solutions and the very BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF that you can possibly be.
So what does this mean for us?
We will always encourage you to focus on solutions and the belief in being able to change what happens next… the power of YET! We know that YOU can do and be
anything you want to be and very much look forward to seeing you learn, grow and develop as part of our Blatch community!
Life often presents us with challenges and new adventures and experiences but it is completely in our hands how we react to them and how we behave.
When faced with challenges we shouldn’t ignore problems - instead we should accept that they exist but focus on solutions (ask for advice, break down solutions into manageable steps, focus our efforts on achieving a positive outcome)
YOU are all joining us as fantastic new members of our school community with so much to offer in your subject lessons, in our extra-curricular opportunities and as friends to other members of our community.
We know you are going to experience and achieve so much with us!
As I said in my very first message to you all…
YOU - the wonderfully unique individual that you are - are already a special and important member of our year group and school community. Over the next 5 years we will work hard with you to ensure you feel INVOLVED - not just in your subject lessons but within our wider community. We will support, encourage and challenge you to ACHIEVE in all aspects of life and really be the very best version of yourself! And we will always work hard to make sure that you know we CARE about you (because we already do!) and are here for you every step of way - to support you through the more difficult days and to champion you and all of your successes!
We cannot wait to support you in finding your feet, making new friends and settling into our community in September - we know it will be an exciting adventure and the start of an incredible journey for YOU and US together!
Involvement, Achievement and Care
Imagine what you could achieve over your 5 year journey with us at Blatch...
Team Blatch’s Weekly Challenge
You can complete the challenges by yourself or with friends/family (safely and virtually or whilst maintaining social distancing) as it is very much a community effort!
In school we’ve also been doing these as an inter-form competition - each form will collect points for every member who completes a challenge and there will also be bonus points up for grabs for the very ‘best’ and most imaginative examples each week too!
The forms with the most points when we return to being ‘in school’ will win rewards to enjoy together to celebrate their involvement and successes in our Blatch challenges and their contributions to our wider community!
We encourage you all to get involved to have a bit of fun each week and most importantly take some time to consider your physical and mental health and our wider community!
How do they work…
Blatch Challenges - Week 2 - Positivity and the Best Version of Yourself! The following challenges encourage you to consider what you can do to reach out to others, spread some kindness and hope, and help keep our Blatch community spirit alive.
Complete one (or more) of these activities and email in a copy / photo / explanation of what you did to Miss Edmed before next week’s assembly:
● Write a ‘Rainbow of Hope’ poem to spread some hope amongst our community
● Design your own ‘coping calendar’ - a daily little thought / or activity to help people keep their mind active and stay connected to others during this time
● Create a rainbow out of whatever materials you can find and either display it in your window or give it to a friend / neighbour who may be feeling lonely as a gift to make them smile (whilst social distancing of course!)
We know that Team Blatch can rise to the challenge and we very much look forward to seeing what you come up with to reach out to others, spread a little happiness and hope, and help keep our Blatch community spirit
very much alive over the coming week…
