Pioneer in sustainable mobility: Bosch is developing the future

From hybrid to fully electric: The different drive systems

Full Hybrid (HEV)With full hybrid vehicles, the combustion engine is com-plemented by an electric motor. The vehicle is driven by an internal combustion engine. Over short distances, however, full hybrids are able to run entirely on electricity. The power required to do so is generated beforehand by the gasoline or diesel engine. In other words, the battery is charged without the need for an electric grid.

Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)With the electric drive, plug-in hybrids can run emission-free over greater distances. The internal combustion engine starts up when the battery charge is no longer sufficient. The battery can be recharged directly from a power socket.

System expertise as a success factor: As a highly innovative partner to motor-vehicle manufacturers, Bosch plays a leading role in the development of efficient systems for hybrid and electric vehicles. No other compa-ny offers such a broad range of components, system expertise and services in this sector. Not by coincidence: The drive technology for hybrid and electric vehicles is interconnected with the vehicle system as a whole. Bosch contributes overarching system expertise and a comprehensive understanding of the com-plex interaction between combustion engine, electric drive and clutch.

The future of mobility is green:Clean, efficient and much quieter!

A growing need for mobility, rising fuel costs, finite fossil resources and higher environmental impact are calling for new mobility and drive concepts. More-over, legislators worldwide are tightening-up emissi-ons directives and raising environment-related taxes. Depending on system variant, hybrid and electric ve-hicles emit between 25 and 100 % less CO2 than tho-se equipped solely with internal combustion engines.

Long range vs. emission-free driving? To this day, electromobility remains an investment in the future. Bosch invests 400 million Euro every year – for example to extend the range of established electric cars to at least 300 km.

Hybrid technology is already suitable for mass-pro-duced vehicles. By the end of 2014, Bosch will have realized 30 production projects on drive-system elec-trification. Bosch is predicting that the year 2020 will see global sales of 6.5 million strong-hybrids, 3 mil-lion plug-in hybrids and 2.5 million e-vehicles (Basis: total of 113 million vehicles sold in 2020).

Electric Vehicle with Range Extender (EVRex)Range extenders are small-capacity internal combustion engines, which re-charge the batteries of electric vehi-cles as the charge capacity diminishes. Unlike the plug-in hybrid, the range extender is a non-propulsive motor. However, it ensures the mobility of electric vehicles – even if there is no charging station within range.

Electric vehicle: Farewell to fuel (EV)The purely electric drive system requires no fossil fuel. Technically, it is only a small step from a hybrid to an electric vehicle: but to achieve broad acceptance, the costs must fall and sufficient charging stations must be available. Bosch is working hard on refining the lithium-ion battery and on creating the prerequisites for an elec-tric mobility infrastructure.

Bosch is familiar with the technical requirements, correla-tions and dependencies in the overall system and across all degrees of electrification:

Bosch engineers brought electric drives to the market within only three years. With its compon-ents and projects, which were launched onto the market in 2010, Bosch supplies various series-production projects all over the world – from the small car to sporty touring saloons and high-performance sports cars.

With the electric drive, Bosch considers the overall concept of the individual drive train components and, when it comes to the issue of range, thinks beyond the limits of the battery. Becau-se range can be extended, not only through larger rechargeable batteries, but also by a more intelligent networking of electric vehi-cles. Including, for example, intelligent charging manage-ment.

Hybrid and electric vehicle components:Technology leader with system expertise

Regenerative braking systems extend the range and cut CO2 emissionsThe sustainability of electric drives hinges on the range and/or the storage capacity. Electric cars achieve the ran-ges required for everyday use only with efficient batteries, intelligent energy management and braking-energy recupe-ration. Regenerative braking extends the range of electric vehicles, cuts consumption and improves the CO2 balance of hybrid vehicles.

Recovering and saving energyWhen braking in a conventional vehicle, most of the kinetic energy is converted into heat and is emitted to the envi-ronment in an unused manner. Hybrid and electric vehicles recover at least some of the kinetic energy with their elec-tric motor and store it in a high voltage battery as electrical energy. The energy stored during the recuperation process is made available to the electric motor for subsequent start-up or acceleration.

Bosch develops fantastic solutions: the hydraulic, the strong, the plug-in hybrid and the pure elec-tric drive, like in the Fiat 500e, for example. By the end of 2014, Bosch will have realized 30 series production projects on electromobility. Even if these projects do not yet apply to a volume market, they are blazing the trail for it. For they involve a new kind of driving experience: the quiet purr of the engine, powerful acceleration espe-cially at a low engine speed – as can be expe-rienced, for instance, in the Porsche Panamera with the plug-in hybrid from Bosch. Vehicles like these can open up the market thanks to an inno-vative driving experience.

Bosch already supplies the hybrid and electric drive as a system solu-tion – comprising: E-machine (motor/alternator) Inverter/power electronics Lithium-ion battery system Regenerative braking system

A company's own users, i.e. vehicle drivers and employees have access to this information. The charging spots can also be made available to customers and other companies, the idea being to increase customer loyalty. Consequently, more and more charging spots will be published and the number of accessible charging facilities will increase – also in terms of area. The higher number of intermediate charging facilities extends the range of e-vehicles. At the same time, the overall costs of electromobility are reducing due to improved capaci-ty utilization of the infrastructure.

Complete solution for electrificationApart from online services, Bosch Software Innovations of-fers, together with qualified partners, complete solutions for the electrification of company fleets. This comprises electric vehicles, the charging infrastructure and its installation and maintenance, renewable energy and eMobility online ser-vices.

Online services can be accessed from anywhere

Company drivers, custo-mers and partners use the charging infrastructure

Bosch connects the charging infrastructure and eases the transition to electric company vehicle fleets Electromobility requires not only new verhicle systems and components, an adequate and networked charging infrastructure also needs to be established. Bosch there-fore opens new business fields. The Bosch Software Innovations GmbH provides eMobility online services de-signed to help companies to manage the charging infra-structure for their electric company vehicle fleets. These online services include, for example, the monitoring and maintenance of charging stations, locating and reserving of charging stations for drivers and the billing of the replenished energy. The software is already in use in va-rious projects worldwide.

Internet services improve the cost-efficiency of electromobility in company fleetsThe eMobility Internet services publish charging spots for the charging and intermediate charging of electric vehicles.
