Sultan was an old dog. He lived in a kennel at theback of an old house.

One afternoon there was a knock at the kennel door.

Sultan opened it. Tuhu, the owl, stood outside.

"Tuhu," said Sultan, "how come you're awake at this

hour?"

Tuhu's eyes were half closed. "I couldn't sleep,"

he said.

"The squirrels in my tree made such a noise."

"What's up?"

"It's Oopi, the chick. He's lost."

Before Su lta n cou ld say anythin g, a crowd of

squirrels, bulbuls, doves, and pigeons came hurrying

to the kennel.

"Oh Sultan," they said together, "Oopi's lost. Nobody's

seen him since the morning."

"I know," said Sultan, "why is everybody telling me.

"You must find him."

"Who? Me? But why me?""Because you're a police dog."

"But I've retired."

"Never mind. You were in the Dog Squad."

"And you did get a medal for catching the big bank

robbers."

"And you have found lost people."

"Can't you find a little lost chick?"
