Who We Are“Fun the Columbian Way”

The purpose of this review is to be as honest as possible and to tell the story of the Yate Alcatraz! We somewhat came to Cartagena on a whim to see the old city, spend some time in the sun, hear the waves and experience something different. In researching how to spend our time here, the boat trip our to the Islas del Rosario became clearly one of the 'things to do' on a longer trip to Cartagena.

We have traveled to very touty places and very not-touty places and knew that this would be one of the more touristy things we'd ever choose to do, but honestly, we didn't want to think too hard and wanted to an adventure.

We bought our tickets for the Yates Alcatraz from the Hotel Cartagena Plaza which is next to the AirBnB condo we are renting. The price was 50,000 COP in the June off-season. We were given some options for private islands with fast speed boats, but I'd read some disconcerting things about the fast boats and we have time, so we went with the Alcatraz. The travel agent told us that we would first stop at the Aquarium where we could pay to enter or to snorkel or not at all. Then we would go to the beach and have lunch. The lunch would be fish. I confused some of the boat times and thought she said 1 hour to the aquarium, 1 hour to the beach and 1 h 40 minutes home. That was not accurate :) Didn't matter, we had a plan.

We took ourselves to the Port for 6,000 COP and were immediately accosted (no kidding, they ran around the taxi) by touts. Our driver pulled up a few more feet and we were in. The main thing to do outside of the port gates is find someone to pay the port tax too. They will give you a receipt and that gets you into the port. Not avoidable, but no need to go up to a window. Inside the port gates, there is some piece and some kiosks to pick up things you probably should have remembered to bring, like a hat for 10,000 cop, sunscreen, sarong - whatever.

“Fun the Columbian Way”They told us the boat would leave at 8.30, but it did not leave until 9.15. It was HOT on there and getting crowded with visiting Colombian families who knew what was up - they had coolers with snacks and rum, beach bags, tons of sunscreen. What they did not tell us was that the boat would have a very loud MC who would spend a lot of time yelling in Spanish! The boat was sort of a long party boat with his help to animate. First, he figured out where everyone was from - 'Baranquilla', 'Cali', 'Medillin!!!' and then did some spirit clapping wars for each side of the boat. Next, was the pole dancing contest. I'm not joking. He found two man volunteers and each did their best attempt at pole dancing. They seemed to know what to do :) My NorteAmericana self was ten shocked when he invited 2 women to do the same thing! Next, everyone through beach towels at them and there was a counting contest, which side ot the boat had more beach towels! After that, was thecross dressing cat walk. Women threw their clothes and our faithful man volunteers put them on and competed for who would be the best woman.

No peace after that, more loud music, combo of Salsa, Rumba, Borchata, Reggaeton with our MC sometimes laughing over it, yelling over it, or singing with it. The ride continued. I took a nap on the bottom part of the ship.

We arrived to the Oceanario which to be honest was pretty cute. People thought it was a trap, our very touristy in these reviews, and it is, but it is sort of charming for what it is. Because we don't speak a lot of Spanish, we roamed around and watched the Dolphins, sea turtles, massive catfish and other sea critters that we couldn't identify swim and show off for tricks. You walk on these boardwalks around which is nice because you are sort of in the sea. Next, we picked up some ice creams and got back on the boat. Also - clean bathrooms!

“Fun the Columbian Way”Next, 1 more hour and we were at Playa Blanca. Probably the most dissapointing bit. You arrive in the water and get on platform boats - some sitting, some standing to the shore. There is a ramp, they put it down in the water and you get your feet wet then sand coated immediately. You begin a 5 minute walk to lunch in the jungle which was a mediocre patacones, awesome arroz con coco, cabbage slaw, fried fish and water down lemonade. Oh, its VERY hot. I was too hot to eat much, but I loved the arroz con coco.

Now to some time on the beach. Some not so friendly, no gracias, adios! and the touts are gone. The water is really warm and very salty, but refreshing. We didnt feel like carrying towels so I had to air dry after swimming. Water wasn't too expensive, 5000 COP for a family sized huge bottle.

I think my second favorite part of the day after the Aquarium was the boat ride back. The heat broke and we had good seats upstairs with a great breeze. We had brought magazines and switched back and forth. I liked the music, husband thought it was getting loud. We were still not done with the animation - our MC was back. More spirit contents. Then we crowned the queen of the boat. Our MC had put on a Fedora and suit by this time. He was also ready for his time to shine - it was Michael Jackson time. He played a soundtrack of MJ mixed with borchata and reggaeton and did a dance performance for us. He also gave a speech thanking G-d for Colombia, Colombian people, the weather, the boat, and a great day. Everyone gave it up for the speech. Last but not least, Salsa was on and there was a dance party which only broke up when we passed the Colombian Armada and people wanted to take photos.

All and all, a crazy day and a good one if you are feeling laid back and wanting to see how Colombians have a good time on a boat day trip. If you are looking for the highest quality beach paradise, forget it. If you are looking for really tasty fried fish - go to Kiosc El Bony and don't think about this. I hope that this was as truthful as possible and that it is helpful for others making the decision. Not sure we'd do it different, not sure you could pay us to do it again :)Visited June 2014
