WHAT IS A REHABILITATION PHYSICIAN? BY DENNIS CHONG, M.D.

Rehabilitation physicians are nerve, muscle and bone experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you function. Rehabilitation physicians have completed training in the medical specialty of physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R). They are sometimes referred to as PM&R physicians or physiatrists.

Physiatry is one of 24 medical specialties certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Physiatrists provide integrated care from traumatic brain injury to lower back pain, from sore shoulders to spinal cord injuries, from complicated multiple trauma to injury prevention for athletes. Their goal is to decrease pain and enhance performance without surgery.

In personal injuries such as automobile injuries and workers’ compensation, there are essentially three questions that need to be answered: causation, treatment and function. Physiatrists can ascertain causation in regards to whether the extent of the pain complaints correlates with the severity of the automobile accident, and whether the motions of a worker are related to a work injury. Physiatrists can determine treatment necessity and establish maximum medical improvement. Finally, physiatrists can decide on functional activities and return to work.

Many physiatrists started medical school thinking that they wanted to go into primary care or family medicine. Physiatrists do manage the whole person and integrate the whole body into function. In some countries, such as Canada, physiatry is a double-boarded specialty of family medicine and physical medicine & rehabilitation. I am board-certified in the U.S., completed training in Canada and received dual board certification there.

Dennis Chong, M.D., obtained his medical doctorate at the University of Calgary in Alberta. He completed a family medicine residency program at Memorial University in St. Johns, Newfoundland. He completed a physical

medicine & rehabilitation residency program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Chong is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He is a certificant of the College of Family Medicine Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada. Dr. Chong currently maintains a clinical practice at Swedish Medical Center Outpatient Rehabilitation & Wound Healing Clinic in Seattle. He is licensed in Alaska, Idaho and Washington.

Our featured physician at this location will be Eric Hofmeister, M.D. Dr. Hofmeister is a board certified and active practice orthopaedic surgeon. He is a graduate of Marquette University. He completed his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and his residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA. Dr. Hofmeister also completed a Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Philadelphia Hand Center in Philadelphia, PA. He is able to address all musculoskeletal concerns in the IME setting with a special interest in conditions of the hand and upper extremity.
