In recent years, waterless car wash and waterless car wash products have grown in popularity around the world. It is important to know which ones work well and which ones do not.  You should also know how to use these fun and innovative products on your car, truck or motorcycle. In this short article, I will discuss what waterless car washes are, how to use them and why you should use them.

The term “waterless car wash” is not exactly “waterless”.  The product and process of cleaning a vehicle does use water, but only about a cup to clean, polish and protect an entire vehicle. The waterless car wash product actually contains 98% water, plus a special mixture of soaps, waxes and lubricating agents that break down and liquefy the dirt on contact. What is most important to note, is this waterless car wash process does not include a bucket of soapy water, nor requires you to waste 100’s of liters of clean water.

The traditional “soap and water” method of cleaning a vehicle can be very wasteful and even harmful to the environment. The runoff water often goes directly to ground and down the storm drain. The storm drains normally flow directly into the local waterways, including ponds, streams and lakes. This oily, grimy and soapy contaminated water can destroy plant life, kill fish and other wildlife too.

The “waterless” method of cleaning is very quick and easy to use, and is much more efficient and safe for the environment. It does not waste or contaminate 100’s of liters of precious water and No water goes down the storm drain to pollute our waterways. In complete fairness, I have to admit the cleaning of the towels is the only dirty job in this process. Given that fact, it is in no way damaging to the environment. The soiled cleaning towels do contain the oils, dirt and grime removed from the surface of the vehicle.

However when washed properly in the washing machine, these contaminants are firstly filtered by the washing machine and safely flushed into the sanitary system, where it is properly filtered and processed. This is a huge difference from directly flushing it down the storm drain and into the waterways.

What about automatic car washes? Yes, they use less water, but it is still not ideal. Typically, they use 120 liters per car wash and the contaminants are filtered and the roller brushes can scratch and severely damage paint work surfaces . Many times, the runoff water is allowed to enter the local sanitary system. This massive amount of contaminated water can put a huge strain on local sanitary systems. Please note, not all of the automatic car washes are the same and the details are different in each city, state or country. You will need to check with your local laws and guidelines for complete details of these facts.

How do you use a waterless car wash? One of the best ways to use a waterless car wash product is to park the vehicle out of the sun, wind and dust. You will need 2 or 3 clean microfiber towels and a bottle of solvent and petroleum free, high quality waterless car wash product. We highly recommend using Pearl Waterless Eco-Friendly Auto Care & Detailing products that we manufacture in the UK.

Once you are ready to begin, spray a light mist on the vehicle’s surface to break down the dirt, grime and grease.  Also spray the first folded, clean, microfiber towel and use it to remove this dissolved dirt. Gently rub the surface with this first towel without putting too much downward pressure. It does not take much effort at all. Using a second, clean microfiber towel, please buff off the remaining haze into a brilliant shine. Begin with the top of the car and work your way around the car, leaving the lower part of the car to be cleaned last.

Tip: Once you have unfolded and refolded the towel and used every clean section, the towel will be too soiled. Please do not use any more until it is properly washed. Switch to another clean towel and continue cleaning the vehicle. Repeat this waterless cleaning method until the entire vehicle is clean.

As you can see, this kind of waterless cleaning is very versatile and easy to use. Many people keep a bottle with them in the car. They clean their cars, boats, and bikes at the park, in their garage, and even while traveling and away from home. Once your vehicle has been cleaned using this method and product, the surface will be slick and not allow for dirt to attach itself as easily. The car will stay clean for weeks and shine will last for months. It will also be protected from damaging UV rays of the sun.

The next time you clean your vehicle, it will take less time and effort because it already has a base coat of polymer wax on the surface. For best results, I recommend cleaning your car without water once per week. Over time, people may begin to think you have your car detailed by a professional, but you will know the truth. It is just you and a bottle of waterless car wash and 10-20 minutes of your time.  It is very quick, easy and much better for the environment. Plus it does not waste tons of water or create pollution.
